Sometimes I don't understand why people post certain things. We'll see where this goes...

well i was just listening to this on my local radio station. Thought it'd be interesting to see what other ppl thought of this. Some people don't have any moral issues w/it while others do.

Ah yes. A new reality show. I believe I first heard of this on the Tony Kornheiser show.

Well I'm from Holland and here people are talking about it virtually non-stop. Basically there's a woman who is going to die because of cancer, and she is willing to donate her kidney to one of three applicants, all suffer from a condition that requires a kidney transplant.

Basically what opinion you form of it is based upon the following: on the one side you have the ethical side, which of course is very very iffy, after all they're not only making organ donations into a gameshow, but there's also an issue concerning the fact that there's a public vote that counts into who gets the kidney, kind of like whoever you like best you can vote for him or her to get the kidney, which is kinda rediculous. So moraly, it's a bit... well sick.

On the other side: there's a big lack of organ donors, which indirectly caused this show to come into existence. Good or bad, this show provides a huge amount of publicity about organ donation, and the discussion on how to improve the organ donor system has improved tremendously, in the European Union, more than 80% of the people would be willing to donate one or more organs, but only a fraction of them acutally wears a donor certificate with them. You could also argue that one of those three is going to get the donor kidney they need so badly, so there's really no harm done.

It's just a question of insight I suppose, I'm not really sure yet, the ethical and moral side does make sense to me, but on the other hand I think the problem of organ donation needs to be adressed, and this show does force the politicians into taking a stand.

Oh one last thing, the network that's going to put this on (it's called BNN) is known to have controversial programmes, and they're known to use the stir-up and contreversy concerning certain topics to get viewers and publicity. In the end, they usually end up making very intruiging programming, they also air a show about sex and drugs that reallly isn't as bad as most people think it'd be when it was the subject of the controversy. In the end, this will probably die out, since the show won't be as bad as it sounds now.

I'm surprised any TV station had the guts to commission this. I can imagine it is extremely controversial, but I don't think its that unethical. I don't find it any less equitable than certain approaches to healthcare. After copying the idea of Big Brother from Holland, something tells me England won't follow the trend here though.

It seems similar in someways to a gameshow we had here called unanimous. There was £1million on offer to a group of 10 people and the only way someone could win was if they all agreed who should have it. For every second they couldn't agree, they lost a pound. It didn't involve a public vote though.
