  • Hate starting a thread on this, but any news on Otah?

I've been combing the interwebs ... and I can't find any news on Otah anywhere on a general site, and I'm fairly certain he was suppsoed to be working out today. Anyone hear anything?

04/09/08 - It's a big day for University of Pittsburgh offensive tackle Jeff Otah, who's holding an individual workout for NFL teams -- including representatives from Carolina -- today on campus. Otah (6-6, 322 pounds) hasn't been able to show scouts much during the offseason because of a lingering left ankle injury. He didn't play in the Senior Bowl and his workout at the NFL combine included a slow 40-yard dash time of 5.55 seconds. He didn't work out at Pitt's regular pro day last month because he wanted to give his ankle a chance to fully recover. Otah needs a good workout to secure his standing as one of the top 20 players in the draft and one of four offensive tackles expected to go in the top 20. He is believed to be a strong option for the (Carolina) Panthers, who have the 13th pick. Otah played left tackle the past two seasons at Pitt, but might be better suited to start out his pro career at right tackle. Pitt coac h Dave Wannstedt called Otah the "best blocker I've ever coached." He's a raw talent with lots of upside. A native of Nigeria, Otah didn't play football until his senior year of high school. - Charles Chandler, Charlotte Observer

I still would like to know how he performed. odd that no one's reporting this considering he is one of the bigger names, literally as well, this year.

I'm not worried about the 40 time here, what I would like to see more is the 5 and ten yard splits here, as those are more telling for linemen. 5.3 is certainly in the range where that owuld be acceptable. 40 time is really overrated for linemen.

In all honesty, IMO, 40 times, 5/10, cones, shuttles ... for the most part, they are all overrated for offensive linemen. How they do in drills would be more telling. That said, we'll end up getting words like "he did well" or "he did poorly" ... basically stuff that won't tell us much.

I'm not worried about any 40 times or anything about him. I'm worried about the 8.5 sacks he gave up against college competition. How is he going to do against the elite players in the NFL?

I agree they are overrated but at the same time if we are talking about using a super elite pick top 5 or top 10 the teams want super elite athletes. No one is going to take a 5.5 guy in the top 10 just because he's a good player on the college gridiron.

I like Otah. He can be a Marcus McNeil type.
