  • 2011 Compensatory Draft Picks

It looks like this year's compensatory draft picks will be announced next week according to the San Diego Union-Tribune and ProFootballTalk. Usually this is done at the owners' meetings.

Look up a guy named AdamJT13's blog if you want an early peek. I haven't checked if he has done it for this year but he is usually really accurate. His picks are just about always on with the odd pick being a round off because of where the NFL sets its cutoff points. He had one significant mistake a year or two ago because of a little known ruling and it was actually a shock to see him miss that pick by two or three rounds. That's how accurate he's been.

*edit nm, just went to his blog and he isn't doing it this year. disappointing, but it is time consuming and there was a chance that there would be no comp picks this year.

Comp picks should be announced today. I will keep my eyes peeled and post them when I see them unless someone beats me to it.

The compensatory picks usually put the total number around 255-ish. They put the first three rounds at or just short of 100. I have been waiting for the comps so I can post a four or five round mock on here. The lockout delayed the announcement by a few days.

The lockout also prevented the Sunday/Monday night schedules from coming out. They will probably skip that and go right to the full schedule, which will come out in mid-April. There will be a thick cloud over schedule day this year because we don't know how many of those games will be played, if any. Hopefully NFL doomsday won't happen.

Well I don't think Moss or Maroney are going to net us much, Ben Watson had a pretty good year for Cleveland though. I don't think we will get anything before the fifth round.

The total number of compensatory picks is fixed, actually. It's always 32. If you don't award 32 picks according to the formula, then additional "supplemental compensatory" picks are appended to the end of the seventh round, after the actual supplementary draft picks.

The draft is supposed to be 256 picks, every year. Though this number decreases due to supplemental draft picks, NFL penalties, etc.

Moss and Maroney were both traded, which means that the Patriots will receive nothing in terms of compensatory picks for them. Compensatory picks are only for players who leave in free agency due to the expiration of their contracts. You don't get them for players you trade or players you cut.

What will Aaron Kampman net us?
I was hoping for a 3rd but after the injury, 4th may be the best case scenario. Not entirely sure how the process works...

Wait several hours and you will know. The formula is not released to the public.

                          I'm hearing that Carolina got a 3rd.
Green Bay and Tennessee got 4ths.
                          Baltimore got two 5ths.
                          Everything else is a 6th or 7th.

Getting an extra third round pick is big for Carolina since they don't have their second.
