  • I've been doing some snooping.

January 10, 2009 - Manti Te'o, on his official visit to BYU, get's caught underage drinking and get's his offer revoked.

February 4, 2009 - Manti Te'o commits to Notre Dame.

Now let's flash back a couple years..

Boston College TE Jon Loyte is visiting a friend at Notre Dame his freshmen year. He gets caught drinking and is forever banned from the big bad Catholic school. They even went as far as threatening to sue him for trespassing if he came to play the BC game in South Bend.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm sure alot of schools don't condone underage drinking. My question is where do the rules end? Do the rules start to bend with however many stars a certain player has?

Not to be a smartass, but yes.

Just about any BCS school would happily kick off this guy for drinking on a visit and still accept this guy if he did the same.

But what interested me in the topic was Notre Dame's ties to catholic church. BYU stood by it's values and dismissed him, even though he's the best prospect that will probably ever visit their campus.

Maybe ND took the: "it didn't happen on our campus therefore it didn't happen" approach

Notre Dame = Thinks they are still a legitimate title contender

BYU = knows their place, sticks to values, gets pat on back

Knows they aren't a national championship contender really, so they sacrifice (maybe) winning to uphold their values - they know the addition of Te'o won't take them from potential BCS buster to National Champions. I didn't mean it in a negative way at all, though it may have sounded like that. It's nice to see a team do that kind of thing.

It is also drinking at the school that makes the difference. ND may have not even known Te'o was caught at BYU. Past that, there is not a whole lot of jurisdiction outside of the school, so it makes sense.

Not to mention, the Catholic Church is much more lax on drinking(read they don't really care, they realize people will always drink. Hell, in the Bible Jesus turned water into wine) than the Mormon Church.

The rules change when the football coach really wants a player. If a coach really wants a player, some stuff gets fudged. I've known people that would have never got accepted if they weren't football players. But because the coach wants him, and they make a lot of money for the school, they get in anyway.
I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me.

Why would they know that? They just saw Utah win the (peoples) National Championship last year...

That must explain why they wanted to ban the BC Tight End for life and even sue him for playing against ND.
