  • Can Ricky Dobbs be a Heisman Finalist?

I know it's crazy in today's game to think of a service school player as a potential Heisman finalist but could it happen this year. Dobbs is probably the most hyped Navy QB since Roger Staubach. Last year he had a prolific passing year for Navy standards with 1031 yards passing and 6 TD's. Rushing he had 1192 yards, and 26 TD's. The thing to look at is the fact that it isn't crazy to believe that Navy can run the table. They have no ranked opponents this year. Notre Dame, today against Maryland, and Wake are their toughest opponents. Last year they beat Notre Dame @ Notre Dame. Obviously he's hurt by the fact that he isn't an NFL prospect and that the option offense is though to be a gimmick, but IMO if you can lead the country in rushing perennially even when the defense knows it's coming, that's no gimmick. I just think it'd be nice to see a guy who plays for a service school becoming a Heisman finalist. He has a chance this year to have monster numbers and lead his team to at least a 10 win season. IMO if he can get around 1500 yards passing, 10 TD's and 1500 yards rushing and around 20-30 TD's, he should be right up there in Heisman balloting.

Dobbs is a great kid and I know a ton of Midshipman that are friends with him and say he is a great guy.

With that said, I don't think so it could happen. He doesn't put up enough passing yards for a quarterback to get votes. Also, with no ranked opponants, it looks like a weak schedule in a gimmick offense.

If they run the table some people could start some noise about it. I can see them inviting him to New York just for show, but it won't happen.

As much as I too would love to see it happen, it just won't. No matter how productive he is, he'll never get the national attention, exposure and press needed to be a Heisman contender in today's college football. He is an exceptional player but being the most outstanding player in college football is no longer the sole criteria for awarding the Heisman. With all that being said, I really hope I am proven wrong. Hopefully his production so impressive, that the voters can't just look past it.

This is what the Maxwell award is essentially for... the real MVP/Most Productive Player in college football.

When Antwan Randel El put up insane numbers, this is what he won, since Indiana went like 6-6 or whatever it was.

I could be wrong, but I think Seneca Wallace won this too.

I'm pretty sure every Maxwell winner was a Heisman finalist as well.

His only chance is if Navy goes undefeated/wins 10 or 11 games.

Why cant he be viewed like a versatile running back?

that essentially what he is, except instead of catching passes hes throwing them.

I agree with this, which is why I've touted Nesbitt. If there was a RB putting up those kind of rushing numbers he'd be viewed as a Heisman finalist. Just throw in the fact that they make some throws and run the entire offense.

Well, his campaign is being derailed fairly quickly, isn't it?

Not if the Navy offense plays like this. The fumbles are just inexcusible.

Yeah if Dobbs wants to be a Heisman candidate he has to play huge in games like this and against Wake and Notre Dame. Because against some of their cupcakes Dobbs will have monster games. If they lose this game though candidacy over.

He's gotta come up huge in this game with alot of the nation watching if he wants a chance. Time to step up and win the game late.
