Bills Sign Schobel To Multi-Year Extension
by Chris Brown, Lead Journalist Last Updated: 8/24/2007 10:06 PM ET

The Buffalo Bills came to an agreement on a long term contract extension with Pro Bowl defensive end Aaron Schobel late Friday.
Schobel who has had 26 sacks the past two seasons signed the contract before tonight's preseason game with the Tennessee Titans. The six-year veteran had three years remaining on his former contract, but his desire to secure his long term future was part of what prompted the deal.
"He wanted to finish his career here and we wanted to keep him here," said Bills Vice President of Football Administration Jim Overdorf. "We just felt that in order the way you do that is by signing him long term."
More details on this story to come.

Wow. Something tells me we'll end up re working Kampman's deal if he has another big year. These deals put him in the bargain bin. Good job by Buffalo.

                Sounds about right to me.

Players that stick out athletically get the bigger contracts. Such as Freeney, Peppers will quash this contract, Suggs will get more, and Merriman will too.

                        Schobel benefited from Kelsay

SCHOBEL BENEFITED FROM KELSAY: When soon to be free agent Chris Kelsay re-signed with the Bills late last February the first teammate he spoke with was Aaron Schobel by phone. Schobel’s first question?
                        “How did we do?”

Schobel used the term ‘we’ not only because playing opposite him at defensive end affords one more one-on-one matchups, but because Schobel was already formulating what he felt his fair market value was going to be as well.

“Well he told me from day one coming into the season last year that he was hoping they would up my contract and extend me because if they did so he’d have some leverage as well,” said Kelsay. “Schobel is not a dumb guy. He knows the business side of it too. As soon as I signed he knew it was his turn.”

So I asked Kelsay if he would be calling Schobel by phone tonight to ask Buffalo's top pass rusher, 'How'd we do?' since his contract likely prompted Schobel's new deal.

“I completely forgot about that, but I ought to," said Kelsay. "I’m sure I’ll get some smart aleck remark out of him.”
