  • Something Interesting

    I was watching the rebroadcast of the 49ers/Chargers pre-season game, and the announcers we're talking about who was taken before LT in 2001. It got me thinking, obviously we can look back now and hindsight is 20/20, but honestly look at 1 team in particular who passed on LT.....but first:

    Atlanta takes Mike Vick #1 which is justifiable because had Vick become what he had the potential to become he would have been a once in a lifetime player.

    Arizona takes Leonard Davis #2 also justifiable in the fact that in 2000 AZ took Thomas Jones 7th overall and they were obviously trying to strengthen their OL for their franchise RB in Jones.

    Skip to the 4th pick the Cincinnati Bengals take Justin Smith 4th overall. This is justifiable because the Bengals at the time had a top RB in Corey Dillon, who had just rushed for over 1400 yards in the 2000 season.

    5th LT to the Cahrgers.

    Now back to the 3rd overall pick......The Cleveland Browns take Gerard Warren 3rd overall. Now 1st of all he wasn't even the best player at his position in the draft, Casey Hampton, Marcus Stroud, and Richard Seymour all went after him. But more importantly look at the RB siuation in Cleveland in 2001...........Jamel White, and Ben ***, how can you possibly justify passing on LT with those 3 as your best options at RB, yeah you got James Jackson in rd 3 but we're talking bout LT......

    James Jackson = 195 carries, 554 yards, 2 TDs
    Jamel White = 126 carries, 443 yards, 5 TDs
    Ben *** = 51 carries, 172 yards, 1TDs

    Total = 372 carries, 1169 yards, 3.1 YPC, 8 TDs

    LaDanian Tomlinson = 339 carries, 1236 yards, 3.6 YPC, 10 TDs

    I know we all know it was a bad pick, but it just boggles my mind how you can make such a bad pick.

      So new rule, NBA: Unless you have a root canal at halftime, SHUT UP AND PLAY!

          .
          It was a bad pick, but let's not forget he was still just a prospect back then. He was coming out of a Veer offense, he hadn't shown his hands, and he had been battling McCallister for first RB chosen for a while. LT wasn't considered a slam dunk in the top 5, which is why the trade worked.

                I nominate the Browns as the worst franchise in the NFL.

                    He's a very good coach, just a horrible GM.

                      Butch Davis is a good college coach, nothing more. I didn't think he was NFL material then and he proved that whether as a coach, GM, or both. I think he'll do well at UNC.

                        Richard Seymour would've been a great pick and would have made the passing on LT sting a lot less.. but I'm sure you guys didn't need me to tell you that.
