No doubt, but when we're discussing dominant players, or players that stand out, I think Merriman being the overwhelming answer is perfectly understandable. He's been the best pass rushing threat in the NFL since he entered the league, he's an immensely powerful defender, and if he maintains his sack rate for most of his career he may well threaten the all-time sack record.

Ware is a great player, and if Merriman never manages to develop the rest of his game further, than he may even be considered the better overall player by the end of their respective careers. But getting to the passer is just about the most visible thing a defender can do, and Merriman does it more than anyone.

Just to make a extrapolation point: If both players maintain their current sack pace and start 16 of 16 games per season until they are both 30, Ware would have 89.5 career sacks. Merriman would have 159 career sacks. That's a huge difference.

Granted, that gives Merriman a distinct advantage because he's two years younger, but he's averaging nearly 6 more sacks per full season to date. Ware is certainly more versatile, but he's not the dominant rushing force that Merriman is by a long shot (or, at least, hasn't been to date).
Merriman has also been used a lot more as a blitzer to this point because he's lacked Ware's versatility, not saying Ware's a better pass rusher just saying that the statistical argument is weak when comparing two guys who are used very differently.
