This is essentially the same thing we'vve had for the Interactive All-American College team and what is currently going on in the draft section for prospect rankings. Essentially, we will interactively vote and rank the best players of all time by position.

For example, we will have a vote for defensive tackle. If you wish to vote for a player, simply type his name and, in parenthesis, what number person voting you are. If you're the fourth person to vote for Joe Greene, just type
    Joe Green (4)
The first player to a certain number of votes wins the top spot in the rankings. Votes earned by other players carry over to the next ranking position. So if three people had voted for Bob Lily, these three votes would carry over to his race for second place.

No currently active players are eligible for vote. Positional rankings are fluid and vary from year to year with players, so it's silly to try and rank them from a historical perspective until we have a completed body of work to analyze.

A couple of things before we start:
How many players should we rank? 5 or 10? Five makes the process go smoother, while 10 allows for a much broader group of players to be analyzed and debated (which is the entire point!).

How many votes should secure a ranking? First to 5 or 10? Five, again, makes the whole thing go smoother, but it is more subject to homeristic or ignorant voting. It also helps keep guys from jumping out ahead to quickly before other viable prospects have been brought up. Remember, a lot of these guys played a long time ago and aren't "fresh" in people's brains.

Now, remember: debate is encouraged! We want to know "why" you think a player is as good, or better, than another. At the end of the day, though, keep in mind that these rankings don't mean anything. It's just the collective opinion of a bunch of football nerds with too much time on their hands.

We'll start off with defensive positions, and move to offense after that (culminating with the great debate: best QBs of All-Time).

    Some great resources:
www.hulu.com/nfl Best thing to use. Has NFL Classics, Old Superbowls, Greatest Games, Season Highlights, and much much more.
profootballhof.com Another great site. Has player bios, stats, and some videos of all players inducted into the Hall of Fame.
pro-football-reference.com Has every statistic you could possibly image. Regular season, postseason, W-L record, boxscores, EVERYTHING.

Let's get this thing cracking gents! Old-timers, I'm expecting a lot out of you on this one.
    Well here is my take.

    1. 10 players at each position.
    2. 10 votes for top 3 5 votes for 4-10

yeah i would go with 10 players at each position. And 10 votes for top 5 and the 5 votes for 6-10. That way would run the smoothest imo.

      Thanks BoneKrusher for the sig

That sounds pretty good. Also, if you have time, motivate your choice a little?

So kind of like the heisman? except with 10 spots

Also there should be some sort of debate before every position and then a set voting time.

so what's the order? S, CB, OLB, ILB, DE, DT, OT, OG, C, WR, TE, RB, QB

do we count all these positions? I'd think that we can put Guards and Centers together and also the WR's and TE's? Will we have a FB vote? Or create a FB/TE vote?

do we do coaches? If so where?

a voting time? Just until it's full. First to reach the required # of votes gets #1, then on to #2 and onwards. Once a list is full we move on to the next one.

Do we even count these votes being cast right now?

Do you really need to confirm that Jim Brown is the greatest FB of all time in addition to being the best running back and arguably the best football player of all time, aside from MAYBE Sammy Baugh?

Yeah, there is no voting time; the votes will be finished when the rankings are filled.

And no we won't count the votes being cast right now.

As far as fullbacks: let's make a clear distinction here. The term fullback has changed over the years. In the old split backs pro set, the fullback was the primary ball carrier. So guys like Brown, Csonka, and Riggins will be listed as runningbacks in the vote.

Also, for less important (or well known) positions, I think we'll only do a top five. I think we'll just do this for centers, guards, and fullbacks, though.

                              coches yes right before QB
each standard pos gets a vote (FB AND TE HAVE OWN RANK)
