  • What's wrong with the Saints?

The offense looks completely in-explosive. They aren't scoring touchdowns in bunches as they did last year.

Rather than just something nebulous such as "Super Bowl hangover", what do you guys think is the cause of the lethargy of the offense?

Was Reggie Bush more valuable to the team than we thought? Does Bush running underneath routes somehow create opportunities for the rest of the offense?

More game film on them now.. Teams have adjusted. That's usually one big thing. The rest wouldn't know because I don't get Saints games. But adjustments to passing concepts is a huge thing. Now you have a large amount of film to watch and break down.

Their offensive line hasn't been getting much push from what I've seen, which in turn is destroying their run game (a banged up Pierre Thomas and losing Reggie Bush hurts as well) and teams are not respecting it at all. There were times today with 6 guys in the box and NO wasn't getting any yards.

There's a bunch of other issues, but Brees hasn't looked right this year. He's checking the ball down quicker than I've ever seen him do. His passes don't have the same zip he had last year and he just doesn't look as sharp.

Whats wrong with the Packers, Colts, Saints, Chargers, Cowboys, Vikings?

None have looked very good. In the Packers case we have been decimated by injuries.

          After today

Aaron Rodgers QB - Supposedly suffered a concussion today
Ryan Grant HB - Out for season
Jermicheal Finely TE - Suffered a "knee sprain" today likely out for awhile
Donald Lee TE - Suffered a shoulder injury did not return
Mark Tauscher T - Was out today

Clay Matthews LB - Hamstring likely out next week
Morgan Burnett S - Out for season
Nick Barnett LB - Out for season (not official but 90% chance)
Brandon Chillar LB - Shoulder injury didnt play
Justin Harrell DE - Out for season
Sam Shields CB - 2nd missed week
          Al Harris CB - PUP
          Atari Bigby S - PUP
Ryan Pickett DE - Ankle injury today did not return
Brandon Underwood CB - Has not played hurt something cant remember what

Nick Collins S - Knee injury been playing through
Cullen Jenkins DE - Club on his hand all year

I know im forgetting a bunch and theres a ton more banged up guys.

So our starting QB, HB, TE, T, LB, LB, DE, DE, CB, S are hurt and alot wont be back.

It's not as if the Saints burst onto the scene last season. That offense has been legit as long as Brees has been there.

When you lose your top 2 RB's, your offense is going to suffer. That offense's bread and butter is Drew Brees's arm, but it was always balanced. Pierre Thomas isn't a big name and Reggie Bush is a pseudo-bust who isn't a true runner, but they still fueled the balance of that offense. And yes, people underestimate the weapon that Bush was, on offense and as a punt returner. Hartley sucking the first few games was bad as well. Having confidence in your FG kicker can have a positive effect on an offense's psyche.

No one's worried about Pierre ******* Thomas, so they can just tee off on the passing game.

This is pretty much most of it. I will admit that Brees has been less than stellar as he was last year. I also feel as if an element of the defense just isn't there the way it was last year as well. That could be Darren Sharper's absence and his ability to free-lance within the Saints Defensive scheme. It sure seems like there were several times last year that we came up with several opportunistic defensive plays that we just don't seem to be getting this year. That swing in momentum can do a great bit to impact both teams for the positive or negative. I can only hope that this punch in the nose does something to wake us up and we get it together for the rest of the season.

the saints went 8-8 two years ago with basically the same offense

the main difference between that team and the super bowl one was darren sharper and the defense getting an insane number of turnovers

                      They've been figured out.

Er, like someone else said - if their offense can be "figured out" wouldn't they have been figured out years ago? They went to the 2006 NFC Championship game with that offense, and then were the #1 offense in 2008 also.

That's incorrect. They were balanced last year which is why they were able to do better. The years before, they relied heavily on Brees and the passing attack, which while nice for Bree's stats, didn't lead to a lot of wins. They're missing that running game element this year.
