I never had much issue with the hit. It's not like he dove at Merriman's knees. When Suh tried to rip Delhomme's head off in the preseason the response was "where were the Olineman??!!!" but the Titans Oline standing up for their QB is somehow wrong? Revisionist history b/c Merriman ended up having a crumpled knee despite nobody hitting it. w/e.

There's a reason why many other teams consider the Titans the dirtiest team in the league. There's a reason why both players were fined for that hit.

They stood up for a QB that essentially ran into Merriman and nearly knocked himself of the game because he wasn't paying attention. Merriman really should have laid him out if the Titans were going to be hurt over something like that.

And it wasn't revisionist history that that hit destroyed his knee. He tore his MCL because of that hit, and ended up playing the rest of the season to the AFC Championship game with it torn like that. I admit his mistake was waiting so long to get surgery after the season was over, which is one of the reasons AJ Smith was so upset with him. But it doesn't change the fact that it was the injury and not the lack of juicing that made him what he is today.

That'd be interesting to see. I don't know how well he'd do there now, or before hand, it's not all that different, but I think staying in a 3-4 as a pass rush specialist may be the best for him.

It's hard to get pass rushers on the field in spot duty as easy as you can in a 3-4, and he's gonna have to play vs the run alot more which he was never a slouch at, but hard to tell if this would be asking to much to change positions.

I mean of course if the price is right he's worth the risk, but he's had enough time to recover from his initial injury vs the Titans, and all he's done since is have other injuries continue to pile up and be a liability on the field.

I believe that steroids can take your game to the next level (e.g. making a good player great, a mediocre player good, etc.) but they aren't the difference between being a below-average pass rusher and being the best one in the game. If he can get healthy, and that's a big "if," then I think he can still be an effective pass-rusher.
I think these latest injuries are all being faked so he can collect a paycheck without really doing anything.

I'd be willing to try him out at DE across from Peppers if the Bears could get him for the league minimum.

I mean, we have Charles freaking Grant on the roster right now.

I wouldn't mind if (insert favorite team) gave him a look.

                        Surprised this hasn't happened sooner.
All he's got left is his mouth and his pride (whatever's left of it).

The odds of Merriman signing with New England are remote, regardless of their need for an impact pass rusher, because Merriman isn't an impact pass rusher. He's not even a decent pass rusher at this point - ever since he got off of the steroids, his body has been breaking down and he's just not the same player anymore. Don't forget the bad blood that exists between Merriman and the Patriots owing back to some of the comments he's made over the years as a member of the Chargers. Most importantly, Robert Kraft has pretty much a zero-tolerance policy for players with legal issues, specifically domestic violence. Add Merriman's likely contract demands on top of all of that, and I'd be very surprised if he's a Patriot at any point.

Could you explain his 2006 and 2007 season then?

I'd take the gamble on him. He won't be expensive, he's only 26, I trust the HC and the defensive coaching staff on the Jets, knee surgery usually takes a couple years to come back from, and the steroid issue is lame to me.

Merriman should be able to become a good player again. People have come back from the knee surgery he's had before, and I like the fact that he acknowledges that he wants and needs to reinvent himself as a player. The Rex Ryan Jets' D could use a guy with his talents when he's healthy. Any team could use his talents if they're willing to let him get healthy and get his head on again. It sounds like big obstacles are in his way, but he's too young and talented to not turn into something again. If he's as hungry as he thinks he is, then this should end well for him.

Does that mean Larry English is starting yet?

                                How the mighty have fallen.

I remember back after the 2007 season, I crunched the sacks-per-start on the top pass rushers in the NFL. The best guys came in around .8, but Merriman was all alone at the top with something closer to 1.1. He was the most dominant pass rusher in the NFL and it wasn't even close to close.

Has CC posted? Is Merriman done or is he just spending too much time on the trainer's table?
