Why does DC.com have Newmans contract not expiring until the next year along with Owens and Columbo?

is there any chance in hell Newman opts out? Or is it a team option? Nothing would make me happier than the gmen signing him away from the cowboys. Actually I'd be happy just seeing him leave the NFC east. He would command more than nate clements on the free market and I find it hard to believe his agent hasn't at least brought the point up.l

He has one big issue, he is actually old. Got out of college at 24 I think.

May get as much per year but not the years per se.

Newman would be only two years older and significantly better.

Im sure we'll keep him around. I know he is going to be expensive, but I think he likes being a cowboy and he is too great and too consistent of a player for us to just let walk away. Especially with questions on our defense year in and year out, we just can't afford to let corner become a bigger issue than it has been.

I luv him but we need to avoid signing big name players at "high twitch" positions toooooo far past 30.

Once a corner is past 32 ...... they are safeties at best.

meh, I think the fact that Newman is a "young" 28 will help him get a big deal. Again with jj as your owner I doubt you guys lose any top players, but as a giants fan you can understand that I'd love to see guys lose some top guys, I.e. Newman.

I would have to think that Newman will void his contract if he has that opiton. Sometimes you can only avoid upon hitting certain escalators. After only getting a 6.5 million dollar bonus and only going to make 1.5 in annual salary, he would be stupid not to. That is cheap today's market. He could make A LOT more.

No question TNew is worth a bit more than what he is paid now. Not sure he is a young 28 by any measure. Plus those high twitch muscles go when they go and that is more a function of age then anything else.

Also no question, Jerry would ever let a good player leave for money. He is not that type of GM -- for better or worse.

But I would rather pay a guy more, per year, and give him a shorter deal at that spot.

If he was an OG or Center probably just the oppossite.

Problem is Newman will never take a short deal. There no doubt that Jerry won't let him go anywhere, but it will cost you. Both money and years. He will want 5-6.

[QUOTE=D-Unit;700063]I went ahead and did the dirty work of collecting our dear Cowboys contracts for every player. Data from www.rotoworld.com. It's updated with Romo's new contract. Glad we got Romo's contract out of the way, but there are many more dominos to fall before next season starts. Hopefully our salary cap is as good as some of you claim. I'm still a bit skeptic. Feel free to discuss.

2008 I'm only commenting on these because the rest of the years are really sort of irrelavent
Flozell Adams - 2007: $5,000,000, 2008: Free Agent Most likely gone after this year, no reason to spend alot of money on a soon to be 33 year old OT when we've drafted several OT the last two years
Marion Barber - 2007: $435,000, 2008: Restricted Free Agent I can see us ponying up some money for him, but it certainly won't be alot. We'll tender him as a first round pick (very moderate money) no worries on the cap
                        Joe Berger - 4/27/2007: Signed a one-year contract. 2007: $435,000, 2008: Restricted Free Agent Who cares?
                        Stephen Bowen - 4/13/2007: Signed a one-year contract. 2007: $360,000, 2008: Exclusive Rights Free Agent Who cares?
Chris Canty - 7/28/2005: Signed a five-year contract. 2007: $435,000, 2008: $460,000 (voidable year), 2009: $545,000, 2010: Free Agent No way he voids this contract in 08, he's ok, but certainly not a hot commodity at DE yet
Patrick Crayton - 2007: $1.3 million, 2008: Free Agent So? He's very replaceable, even if signed he's cheap
Keith Davis - 4/10/2006: Signed a two-year, $3.1 million contract. The deal included a $1.2 million signing bonus. 2007: $925,000, 2008: Free Agent I hope we don't resign him, he's terrible in coverage and too expensive to be just a ST ace. His cap figure goes down or he's gone. Either way, we're in better cap shape
Ken Hamlin - 3/23/2007: Signed a one-year, $2.56 million contract. The deal included an $800,000 signing bonus and contains $600,000 in incentives. 2007: $1.7 million, 2008: Free Agent probably signs another deal, more cap friendly for 3-5 years after the season. Improves cap postion for team
Julius Jones - 7/29/2004: Signed a six-year, $4.37 million contract. The deal included a $1.9 million signing bonus. 2007: $510,000, (2008-2009 voided), 2008: Free Agent Gone after this season or signs a cheap deal. Replaced in draft most likely
Nate Jones - 2007: $510,000, 2008: Free Agent Who cares?
                        LP Ladouceur - 3/25/2006: Signed a two-year contract. 2007: $435,000, 2008: Restricted Free AgentAnother cap friendly deal
Terence Newman - 7/23/2003: Signed a seven-year, $33.4 million contract. The deal included a $6.5 million signing bonus and contains $13.1 million in guarantees. 2007: $1,138,667, 2008: $1,416,417 (voidable year), 2009: $1,694,165, 2010: Free AgentPlays 08 and voids 09 almost assuredly, will cost a mint but plenty of cap room to spare going into his contract so no big worry
Evan Oglesby - 2007: $435,000, 2008: Restricted Free Agent who cares
                        Cory Proctor - 5/1/2007: Signed a one-year contract. 2007: $435,000, 2008: Exclusive Rights Free Agentwho cares
Jay Ratliff - 7/20/2005: Signed a three-year contract. 2007: $435,000, 2008: Restricted Free Agentan unexpected surprise this year will cost more than we thought, he gets a good deal in the range of 5 years 18 million dollars in the offseason
                        Jacques Reeves - 4/20/2007: Signed a one-year contract. 2007: $850,000, 2008: Free Agentjust a guy, signs a cap friendly deal or leaves
Tyson Thompson - 2007: $435,000, 2008: Exclusive Rights Free Agentdefinitely gone after this season

                        2009
Only going to comment on one player from this year
Terrell Owens - 3/18/2006: Signed a three-year, $25 million contract. The deal included an initial roster bonus of $5 million. 2007: $5 million (+ $5 million option bonus + $3 million roster bonus), 2008: $4 million (+ $3 million roster bonus due in June), 2009: Free Agent His cap value actually goes down next year so no worries, and he's not signed to another contract

Anthony Henry - 3/2/2005: Signed a five-year, $25 million contract. The deal included a $10 million signing bonus. 2007: $3.6 million, 2008-2009: $2.6 million, 2010: Free Agentas you can see, his cap figure goes down a million a year next year

                        Terry Glenn - 3/27/2006: Signed a five-year, $20 million contract extension through 2010. 2007: $820,000 (+ $5 million roster bonus), 2008: $1,740,000, 2009: $2,000,000, 2010: $4,950,000, 2011: Free Agentobviously he won't be back next year saving 5.2 million vs. what he cost this year on the cap

overall we're in very good cap shape with our most expensive players (Owens, Flozell, TGlenn) all getting cheaper or leaving the team entirely. Romo's cap hit will be +6 million from what he costs today and that's what Glenn is costing us so it's a net ZERO to the cap. We're allready over 10 million under the cap and the cap is set to expand by 6-8 million next year. We have enough money to sign at least 1 and maybe 2 TOP TIER FA's in the offseason if we chose to do so.

Newman can void his 2008 contract, not his 2009 one. Unless that data is wrong. So I don't see him suiting up for us next season unless he has a new contract.

The guys I'm most worried about is:

Flozell Adams - I think we need to bring him back if he's willing to take on a much more reasonable salary.

Marion Barber - Priority 1A. Newman is 1B. We lose our bad ass identity if he's gone.

Chris Canty - IMO, he deserves a bigger contract. Signing him to a 5-6 year contract with a salary at 2M a year that escalates to 4M a year will be a smart deal for the Boys if Canty keeps progressing the way he has. Otherwise I see him turning into an expensive player that will have to pay much more to keep later on.

Ken Hamlin - A deal similar to Gurode would be good.

Terence Newman - Pay the man, but just like Henry, make it de-escalate (is that a word?) before it ends.

Cory Proctor - I've always been intrigued by what I read of him. Should be cheap.

Jay Ratliff - Beware. Don't overpay. Keep him at a reasonable price.

If Flozell plays like he did last night he would be worth more than $5 mil.

I don't think Flozell will be resigned. He is currently playing at a high level but is also going to be 33 by the start of next season and has a history of injury during the last few years.
