The Cowboys held their first team-wide offseason workout of the lockout, and one player was noticeably absent.

Last Friday, Bryant did not show up for a meeting with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones after Jones told the media he was scheduled to meet with Bryant. When pressed for an explanation, Jones told the media the two had already discussed everything they had needed to at a separate meeting the previous day, but admitted he did not know where Bryant was Friday.

Now, he was not present in the biggest team activity since the lockout began. Whether it's a blip on the radar or the beginning of a larger problem remains to be seen.

What is up with this dude?

There are no problems yet. He's just not earning extra credit by voluntarily showing up. But neither are A LOT of other Cowboys players. Do you hear any news about that? No. Seriously, it's a story because people like to make a fuss about Dez. I blame the media for building up the public perception of him being a bad character guy. The entire league is in a chaos right now with players being allowed to practice and then being told NOT to practice. Only the guys who live in Dallas in the offseason were probably there. I doubt Sean Lee attended, because last I heard he was working out in Pennsylvania, not wanting to fly here just to be told he can't work out. So until the air clears about this whole lockout ordeal, I don't expect 100% voluntary participation in these practices. Just another story out there to spin a bad wrap on a guy who's an easy target.

    • I posted this in the team needs section heading into 2012, it's a little early but I think we have a pretty decent idea of where we're at with these positions.

      Before FA:

      1. Free Safety- Still have not found a decent replacement since Darren Woodson left. We drafted Akwasi Owusu-Ansah last year in the 4th round but he missed most of the season due to injury, he's a question mark at this time. Other than that we are bare bones at the position with guys like Barry Church and Danny McCray as possible starters. We can't go into the season without an upgrade.

      2. Guard- Oft-injured Kosier has been solid but is slated to hit FA once the lockout it over, and given his age I'm not sure if he'll be back. Even if we do re-sign him we have problems on the other side with Leonard Davis, who was flat out terrible this past season and might be aging quicker than we expected. We drafted David Arkin in the 4th but he needs at least a year of seasoning before he can compete for a job. Montrae Holland is still on the roster and has done a decent job in spot-duty, but I wouldn't feel comfortable if he was named starter heading into the year.

      3. Strong Safety- Sensabaugh is a FA and hopefully we can bring him back for some stability at the position. He's nothing more than average and we could stand to upgrade, but given the status of our secondary we can't afford to risk letting him walk.

      4. Cornerback- Newman is always battling injuries and he's getting up there in age, he's a shell of his former self. He may not be back with us heading into the season. Jenkins was spectacular in his sophomore campaign but his struggles this past season are well documented. If he doesn't turn it around we're going to have a huge problem in the secondary going forward as he's the only young player who's showed promise. Scandrick was awful the first half of the season but turned it around in the 2nd half, he may have to battle Josh Thomas in TC for the nickel job.

      5. Defensive Line- I'm ranking this a little lower than most would expect because we have some young promising talent at NT in Josh Brent and DE in Stephen Bowen. Marcus Spears has been a bust and might not be back, Jason Hatcher has some nice measurables but he just can't seem to put them all together. Igor is what he is, a decent run stuffer and nothing else. Ratliff had somewhat of a down year and the wears of playing as an undersized NT are beginning to show, hopefully the change in scheme and improved play from those around him will help him bounce back. 7th Round pick Sean Lissemore was somewhat of a pleasant surprise at the end of the year, hopefully he pans out. We needs to find a way to create some pressure from our DL.

      6. Strong Side LB- Spencer flashed moments of greatness in the 2nd half of the 09 season but other than that he's been JAG and Demarcus Ware can only do so much without a counterpart. This is a contract year and it's time for Spencer to step up, if he can't then you can add OLB to our list of needs heading into 2012 draft.
      Cowboys Mock:
      1. Myles Jack | LB | UCLA
      2. Vernon Butler | DT | LA Tech
      3. Karl Joseph | SS | WVU

Agree 100% with this. Really is sad how bad our secondary and interior offensive line is right now. Makes me want to throw up. In a year we are going to need a Center also, which is why I wanted Wisnieski(sp?) in the 2nd round really bad for that versatility.

Now that you broke it down like this, makes me wish we went alot of different ways in the draft. I can understand passing on safeties because there wasn't alot of talent, but there were a bunch of starting quality CB's and especially Guards/Centers starting with the 2nd round. We could of came away in those 3 rounds with a starter at both spots no matter which order we did it in, and this would have been a great draft to take two Guards.

Anyway, yea we have some pretty big needs still on the board.

Our biggest needs left are at both Safety spots, Cornerback and Guard.

I was pretty discouraged by the Bruce Carter pick, because I think we could've gotten DB help there. Heck, even Wisneiwski would've been an instant starter.

But by the time the 3rd round rolled around, there probably wasn't a better impactful player at S and OG available that can do what Murray can do to make us better or get us better value. ...though I could argue that DE value was there in Allen Bailey, for example.

But I'm willing to see how FA pans out. If it doesn't work, then the crucifying sticks will come out for sure. We NEED secondary help in the worst way... and a solid Guard like Blalock or Nicks.

          • I don't know if Nicks is anything more than a pipe dream but I could be wrong. He was tendered and although that doesn't mean anything right now...you can bet he'll get the highest tender when a CBA agreement comes around. Just like you can bet Doug Free will be a cowboys.

I'm also not sold on Blalock...I never did like him much in space...but then again I can't say I've watch a ton of him in the pro's so maybe he's gotten better in that area. I think we'll go with someone better in space but I could be wrong.

            • I just pray we dont intend to keep Davis. Cut ties. He was our worst lineman last year. I'd re-sign Kosier, and find a RG via FA.

Actually you are right. Nicks was tendered... Mankins was franchised.

I like Blalock most, but I would be pleased if the Cowboys signed one of these guys too:

Davin Joseph - coming off a fractured foot injury, but only 27 years old. *Still laughing at Philly for taking Watkins*

David Baas - Can also play Center

Chris Chester - Same as Baas, can play C or G.

Daryn Colledge - Feelin' just so so about this one

Evan Mathis - Health is a concern, but he's been tweeting that he wants out of Cincy and he's a decent talent.

                  • I don't know if anyone saw my post in the "Fix the Cowboys" thread, but since there is no discussion there... I made mention that we should pick up Jenoris Jenkins in the Supplemental Draft.

                    Thoughts on that move?

                    • Yea I read that and meant to respond, but yes Jenkins would be a good gamble for a 3rd rounder IMO. I think quite a few teams will put in a bid for him, and a 2nd is just a big gamble. We seem to shy away from guys like this though, remember how Talib was taken completely off of our board that draft? Which was weird because he was a hometown kid, same for Percy Harvin and a few others.

I think with Talib facing a suspension it'll scare us away from even trying for Jenkins but the upside of his talent and the weakness at our position I'd be fine with a 3rd. We've wasted that away in trades, and much worse players then Jenkins who is a 1st rounder on talent alone and may gone in the 1st this year as it is.

Doubt we do it though, he seems like an idiot and an asshole, the attention anything he does by being in Dallas and in the spotlight would be catastrophic.

I just think the cost of investing on him would outweight his return, but yeah... doesn't really seem like a Jason Garrett kind of character.

In that case... I'm ready to give Nnamdi the $120M dollar contract that he wants. Good Lord.

                        • I have actually been thinking about the supplemental draft because of Jenoris. I think he would be able to help a lot, I am just unsure what would have to be offered to get him. I would expect it would be a fairly high pick, as he seems like he could probably play year one.

I am the lone person that thinks a large part of the CB problem is Anthony Spencer (or what I mean to say is the lack of pass rush). I have been amazed at how little he has brought to the table. When he came out, it was clear that he was drafted due to his pass rush potential alone. I can only think of the half season in 2009 when he played well and if I remember correctly, everyone in the front seven was playing well at that time also.

I am on the band wagon for getting Jenoris in the supplemental, but I still feel like until we find someone else that can be disruptive besides Ware, it may be more of the same.

I noticed that David Ball, DE for the Titans, may be a free agent. I know it would be a position change and kinda risky, but I was thinking he might could be a stop gap. He is 6'5 255 and kinda rangy. He is 30 years old, but he did have 7 sacks last year and I don't think he has a ton of miles on him.

It makes me mad to be looking among the free agent pool of players to try and find a pass rusher. I went to two preseason games last year and I remember thinking "All of these linebackers are good." I don't know what happened once it was time to start playing real football.

                          • As a side note-now I remember actually posting that I went to one of the games and actually posting on here afterward the game that all the linebackers look good and appear to be ballers.

I feel pretty dumb right now.

                            • I really hope Garrett stays true to the words he speaks. He says he wants open competition... well, Victor Butler should emerge as the better pass rusher and I hope that helps. Spencer's FA is looming... he'll either bust out like crazy to earn that next contract or he's a goner (hopefully).

                              • I'd really love to have more faith with Spencer like I did for 09, but he didn't turn the corner as huge as I wanted him to. In 09 he was great besides getting those overrated sack numbers, but he took some steps back last year. He just wasn't making the plays that he should have. Sure he looked good against the run, but that burst and quickness he had in 09 wasn't there. Hopefully Butler lights a fire under him because the guy keeps getting better and better. I'm thinking he'll step up again and look great at it. He just needs to get better at defending the run and covering passes, but either way it goes he's offering something as a pass rush specialist.
