Sure he looked good against the run, but that burst and quickness he had in 09 wasn't there. Hopefully Butler lights a fire under him because the guy keeps getting better and better. I'm thinking he'll step up again and look great at it. He just needs to get better at defending the run and covering passes, but either way it goes he's offering something as a pass rush specialist.
I know what you mean... but our entire defense sucked. Hard to pin it on just one position. What's the guy to do when the secondary can't buy him time and the DL can't block for him? Unless we fix our secondary and DL in FA... expect more of the same. Bruce Carter and Josh Thomas ain't gonna come in and rescue the day.

We need to fill 4 positions in FA.

      FS
      SS
      CB
      DE

...and that's just defense... We need 2 starting guards too.

I'm glad he's having a decent career, but he's not my idea of a superstar. No sense in crying unless he was.

          • considering Nnamdi's age, (30 in july) it's probably going to be a bit steep cap wise paying him Demarcus Ware or better type money when we first have to figure out Doug Free and Stephen Bowen's contracts plus finding a couple free agents at safety and maybe another at DE. We might only get 2 good years out of Nnamdi before we start seeing an obvious decline. But some of this depends on the cap situation is going to look like going into next year.

I like the idea of going after Jenkins for a fourth maybe, but I would think some team desperate at cornerback like the Lions will put in higher maybe even a 2nd rounder. Plus as you say Garrett is taking the high road with the players labeled with character risk.

it also Sounds like Cincy is committed to keeping J. Joseph long term too unfortunately. That would be the other nice option. There might be some other veterans that get released too that might add for quality depth, but i just tend to think cornerback is less of a concern than getting quality safeties and maybe adding another good DE if one is out there.

Anyone have thoughts on Barry Cofield? He's going to be available. I know he's a good run stuffer and has the size for 3-4 DE though i don't know if the switch would be natural. I Hope Jerry looks into that one.

              • What do you guys think about moving Newman to safety?

Then you could get a CB such as Asmoghua or Jonathan Joseph and plug him in at Newman's old position.

And you could probably extend Newman's career by a couple of years by playing him at safety.

                • Newman needs to be cut, he'd be a liability at Safety too and not nearly as physical or durable. We are probably gonna make the playoffs, but the only way we make a serious run is if our line holds, and Romo elevates his game to an Aaron Rodgers level in the playoffs.

Alot of big games for us are probably gonna end 35-31 or 31-28, unless we can get up fast and pin our ears back to attack the QB it's gonna be tough. I guess the only silver lining is that the Eagles and Skins secondary is just as bad as ours, it's actually a fight for who has the worst.

I agree with LL. Newman should but cut. I don't even want him back on a restructured deal because I still think that restructured deal will be expensive.

                    • I like how you guys are going crazy with the Madden-style roster management and we don't even have a clue if pro-football gets played this fall. Dallas drafted like a team with no needs, Newman is still overpaid even if moved to safety, we aren't going to trade for anyone, Asomugha is a pipe dream without MAJOR cap manipulation. With Roy, Barber, Davis, Newman, Brooking, Colombo, others all on chopping block who knows how much of that goes against out cap this year.

                      • I really don't think it's Madden like roster management signing lower level guys like Huff and Blalock or going crazy with FA add ons. Aso may be a pipe dream but it's a typical Cowboy signing and if anyone gets him we would probably be in the top 5 choices.

I don't know what the FA period will be like or if we have one, but I'm just going to talk like everything else will fall in line and if it doesn't happen so be it. I don't know why it matters if we don't know if were playing football in the fall or not, I just hope were active in doing the best we can to try and improve before the next game.

                        • I wouldnt call Huff a "lower level" FA signing...guy is going to make bank. I dont know what we'll have to spend in FA, but Huff is going to be pretty damn costly. Something pretty comparable to Rolle, probably.

                          • Everyone gets paid in FA no matter who it is. But Huff isn't gonna get paid more then Whitner for instance, nor do I think he'll be the best Safety on the market. Same for Guard with Blalock, I feel like there will be a handful of guys that get paid more. They are still starters, but you have to spend money in FA period if you want a starter, that's just the nature of the business.

Brooking is not on the chopping block. Barber or Choice are going to be gone. Newman is about to make what? $11M? Raise your hand if you think he's gonna get that. I could see Davis coming back, but it's not like the guys on this forum are the only ones talking about him being a potential cut. Colombo could be back if he's willing to be a good soldier. I think as a swing tackle, he makes some sense. That said, why bring back these guys if they aren't going to help us now and are not a part of the long term picture?

Speaking of Choice.... I love the guy, but why are there rumors saying Garrett doesn't like him and that he could be gone/traded? I figure the most sense is in cutting Barber and his fat contract. What gives? What do you guys think will happen?

                              • If it's 1 thing I don't understand it's how Choice is supposedly in the dog house. If we somehow kept Barber and traded Choice I'd give up on this team. Maybe it's something in house, but what has Choice done other then step up in spot duty and been ready to play?

I really hope he is the starter and we mix in alot of Felix and Demarco, but I guess it's something going on I don't know about.
