  • My First Lions Mock Draft-3 Rounds

Go ahead and tear this up though I hope many like it:

    1st- Brandon Flowers CB

    2nd- Curtis Lofton MLB

    3rd- Chevis Jackson CB

An actual NFL team might not go with 2 CB's in the first 3 rounds but we need lots of CB help, I also would make sure to keep Bryant on team through at least this year. Also, would resign Keith Smith because he is a playmaker when put in the right position, though definitely shouldn't start.

    My offseason would go:

    Atwan Odom/Justin Smith DE

Al Wilson MLB- Can show Lofton the ropes for a few year Lofton could also start at SAM until he moves to MLB.

    Sean Locklear-RT

That is all for now I would also go with a shifty speed RB in the 4th.

Forgot to add that a scouting report from NFL.com compares Lofton to Ernie Sims gotta love that.

There are WAY better CB's to take at 15 then Flowers.

If you gave us someone other than Flowers in the 1st it'd be a good mock

I was going to say Talib but I am quite impressed with Flowers. If I put Talib in the 1st would everyone be happy with that?

            Mayock seems to disagree.

I'll have a go at this too though:

*Lions trade WR Roy Williams to either Dallas Cowboys for 1st round pick (28th overall) or to San Francisco for 1st round pick (29th overall).

ROUND 1 (15): RB Rashard Mendenhall, Illinois
ROUND 1 (28): CB Brandon Flowers, Virginia Tech

ROUND 2: OLB Erin Henderson, Maryland / OLB Tavares Gooden, Miami (FL)

ROUND 3: TE John Carlson, Notre Dame

*assuming we get another round 4 pick somehow*

ROUND 4: DE Darell Robertson, Georgia Tech
ROUND 4: DE Cliff Avril, Purdue

that right now is a draft I can see happen. We get a (IMO) fantastic running back prospect, a corner in which I see a prototypical Cover 2 pass-defender, some much-needed help behind the lines with a talented ouitside linebacker. The Tight End issue settled by getting a guy who can block and catch from the tight end position. Finally, two pass-rushers who, although they struggle a bit against the run, are good pass-rushers and also have good motors and no character issues:

Avril: "Hard worker with top intangibles"
Robertson: "Smart and a hard worker with solid intangibles"

            (from their scouting reports)

            I remember NFLDC

I was actually going to propose a trade for Roy and then do something similar to you.

Roy Williams to the Jets for L. Coles and J. Vilma.

              1st- Flowers- CB

2nd- E. Henderson- OLB Very high on him too

              3rd- Chris Johnson- RB

I'm not a fan of that trade for the Lions. We have two receivers already similar to Coles in McDonald and Furrey, and after reading this about Vilma on wikipedia, this scared me quite a bit.

"Vilma was diagnosed with osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) in high school, a bone defect that can cause instability and loose particles in the joint, and this is a possible cause behind his season-ending 2007 injury."

                He may be damaged goods.

Forgot to say if Vilma is completely healthy. I would love Wilson to be signed, but Vilma if healthy could be a part of the team for a long time. A young LB core of Sims, Vilma, and Henderson would be quite good IMO, especially since the oldest of the 3 is 25.

Call me crazy but I was looking at the Lions roster today thinking about if I missed anything that pertains to this draft so I broke down position by position and came up with this.

Now witness things the Broth223's longwinded explanation of things you already know!!!

QB - Current players John Kitna > Drew Stanton > Dan Orlovsky > JT O'Sullavan

Draft value at 15 - *** most likely we can get the 2nd or 3rd best QB

Need - ** Although I am in no way saying that Kitna is a top 10 QB but I would put him at the top 15 AND we have the QB of the future (how much future I don't know?) in Stanton.

Final thought - Even if the extreme happens and Matt Ryan (or whomever ends up being #1 QB) falls to us we can't draft him nor will we draft a QB in the first 6 rounds.

                    HB - TJ > KJ >Brian Calhoun

Draft Value at 15 - **** It is very likely that the #2 RB will be available

Need - **** The Lions have said that they they are now more focused on the running game. KJ wants out and Calhoun hasn't been healthy enough to play so they are both out. What we really need is a compliment to TJ.

Depth at the position - **** Based on what we need we could get a player for this need in the first 3 rounds.

final thought - I have a hard on for Chris Johnson. I would cream myself in ecstasy if Lions got him in the 3rd. Other than that Mendenhall could be a decent 1st round pick but not my 1st choice.

WR - No just no even if we trade Roy we won't draft a WR this year.

OT - Backus, Scott, Woody, George Foster

Need - ***/**** If we keep Backus Scott and Woody and keep them healthy there is still a need at backup. I was surprised how low I found the OT position as a need and I may be more crazy than I originally thought.

Value at 15 ***/**** - It is likely that we could get the 3rd or 4th best OT

Draft depth - ***** except for Long the next 5 are really interchangeable.

Final thought - The question is can we get one of the top 6 in the 2nd round if we can then there is no reason to take a OT at 15. If we can't then you must strongly consider taking one in the 1st round

OG - Edwin Mulitalo, Stephen Peterman, Barry Stokes, Manny Ramirez

Need ***** - If we keep Woody at OT then we have a massive hole at RG. If we start running on the inside we need a guard.

Value at 15 - ***** Brandon Albert could be one of the best guards in the draft for a few years. That said I've hardly ever seen a guard go at 15.

Depth - ** Although Albert may be head and shoulders above whomever is #3 or maybe even #2

Final thought - If the Lions could trade down to say 20. pick up a 3rd (which is way below value) I would take Brandon Albert at 20 without even thinking twice.

FB/TE and Defence will be discussed later.

It is not like Peterman is terrible but he could be upgraded. I really like Frank Davis too, if you want to run the ball straight ahead put him in the game. Branden Albert I've heard could transition to LT so I wouldn't be upset. I think going OL in the draft would be smart with Mule getting older and the uncertainty of re-signing Woody for RT. Average players even at OG are getting crazy money so building in the draft sounds pretty good to me.

Nicely written. I think you hit the nail on the head with a lot of your points. The defense write-up should be interesting, just because we could either go line, linebacker, or DB with the 15th pick.

I love the points you made because i agree with most of them. But going based off of need and who we could get at 15 then the obvious answer is CB. I understand you havent done the defense write up yet but CB is easily ***** (or whatever the max is) and we could possibly get the #2 CB at 15.

Now I will continue my long winded analysis of the Lions and tell you stuff you pretty much already know. But this section may make you think a little.

FB - Jon Bradley, Casey FitzSimmons, Sean McHugh.

Draft value at 15 - Are you F***ing kidding me???

Need - *** Although I don't think that Bradley has done a bad job at the position he could easily be upgraded.

Depth - *** I think you could find a starter in the top 3 FBs.

Final Thought - Just like I have a hard on for Chris Johnson I have a hard on for Owen Schmitt. Think of it this way which would you rather have in the 4th or 5th round? A) A player that has a 50/50 chance of even making the team and a much less chance of starting any snaps. or B) A instant starter at FB and one that may become a pro bowler in 4-6 years. I know my decision.

TE - Dan Campbell, Sean McHugh, Some other guy.

Value at 15 - * Yes we could get the #1 TE in the draft at 15 but there isn't one that is good enough to be taken at 15. Lets face it there are no Vernon Davises, Jason Wittens, or Greg Olsons in this draft.

Need - *** Right now the TE slot lives and dies with Dan Campbell who outside of this year has been healthy. McHugh isn't terrible but we could use a second TE.

Depth - ** If we got one of the top 2 TEs in this draft we could get a starter and one of the top 4 may usurp McHugh.

Final thought: Well at the moment we do not have the luxury to spend a day one pick on TE depth we just have to hope that Campbell can stay healthy this season.

Now Lets Talk About The D

DE - Dwayne White, IAF, Jared DeVries Corey Smith, Kalimba Edwards

Value at 15 - **/*** It seems that the top 3/4 best DEs may be gone by 15 in Long, Goldstein, Harvey and maybe even Merling.

Need - ** At the moment we have a second round pick in IAF and a very good free agent pick up in White at the end position plus we have decent backups in DeVries and even Edwards is a decent backup yes we may need to find a pass rush specialist but Not this year

Final thought - Many have said that IAF may be moved to the DT position. Personally I don't see it we spent too much money on Cory Redding to not have him start. So at the moment I can't see us addressing this need until next year and that is only if IAF doesn't step up.

DT - Shaun Rogers, Cory Redding, Shaun Cody, Langston Moore.

Draft Value at 15 - Zilch there isn't a DT I would even consider at 15 unless someone takes a major stock fall.

Depth - * after the top 3 guys (two of which are top 10 picks) you can really interchange the next 5 or 6.

Need - ** I am going to answer this more at the end but right now I can't see spending a day 1 pick on a DT.

Final thought - Right now it seems that we need a DT to rotate with Shaun Rogers because he can't handle the load on his own. (See the 3 Big Questions portion at the end for more)

OLB - SAM - Alex Lewis (Boss Bailey UFA)
                            WIL Ernie Sims, Anthony Cannon

It is apparent that the WIL position is well set so I am only looking at the SAM position.

Value at 15 - * There is one guy at 15 who could even be considered at 15 but he is really a MLB (Dan Connor)

Depth - **** I'd say that you could get the 6th best OLB in the draft and would be able to start over Alex Lewis.

Need ***** - Although you do not need a great SAM LB in the cover 2 you can't have Alex Lewis at the starter.

Final Thought - I think this is a no brainer OLB pretty much has to be a day 1 pick.

TIME TO MAKE PEOPLE SHOCKED OR ANGRY!!

MLB - Paris Lenon Teddy Lehmen (UFA) Buster Davis

Value at 15 - * There is only one ILB that I would feel at all comfortable taking at 15 (Connor)

Depth - ***** We could really take any of the top 5 ILBs in the draft and they would be able to start right away.

Need - ****** I'd say it could be the 2nd/3rd biggest need in this draft. Behind CB and maybe OL.

Final Thought - Despite what I have said above I think we should NOT draft a ILB in the upcoming draft. *GASP* Hear me out. Next season there will be two ILBs coming out that would have been the first ILB taken over Connor. In all likelyhood we will be a top 15 pick again next season. I don't really think that both of those guys are gone in the top 15. So we wait a season and BAM all pro ILB in the first round while addressing other needs in this one.

CB - Fernando Bryant, Travis Fischer (UFA), Keith Smith (UFA)

Value at 15 - **** It is likely that we could get the 3/4 best CB.

Depth - ***** We could get any one (or two) of the top 10 CBs in this draft and they could both start for us.

Need - *********** By far the biggest need even if we didn't have guys leaving in FA that corps is bad very bad.

Final thought - We are going to need to get at least one CB in day 1 of the draft there has been old adages that you don't need good corners in the Cover 2 which is kind of a misnomer you don't need speedy corners in the Cover 2.

S - We are 2 deep at both safty positions with Gerald Alexander, Danny Bullocks, Kenoy Kennedy, and Greg Blue (whom should be resigned)

THE 3 BIG QUESTIONS OF THE OFFESASON

Q: What big name FA do we go after this week?

A: I don't think that we should we aren't 1 or 2 players away from even being a playoff team even if we hit on 75% of our draft picks. I say save the money till later. If I had to pick one I'd go Alan Faneca.

Q: Should we trade Roy Williams?

A: Yes I don't think Roy wants to be here. Best case if you ask me is an early 2nd + 4th I'd rather have that than a late 1st really.

                            Q: Should we trade Rogers?

A: This one I had to fight with myself with but the ultimate answer is no ... at lest not this year. Who are you going to get to replace Rogers? The popular answer is draft a player with whatever pick you get for him. Problem with that is two fold. One we still take a cap hit(correct me if I'm wrong about that). And two After Dorsey and Ellis every DT has that questionable Motor that we are slamming Rogers for having.

And Finally my draft plan for the Leos

Trade Roy Williams to San Fran for a 2nd and 4th Round pick

Trade back anywhere between 16 - 20 and pick up a 3rd round pick

                            Round 1

16 - 20 Brandon Albert - He is versatile enough to play both OG and OT and play both positions very well this is what we need more than anything.

                            Round 2

39 (from SF) - Antoine Cason CB - I said it before we have a big big need at CB and if we can take 2 CBs in day 1 the could both start for us well here's 1.

                            45. Best OLB available

                            Round 3

3a - Chris Johnson RB - He is the perfect lightning back to the TJ Duckett Thunder and he is a KR machine.

3b - Chevis Jackson - Could I go as far as to say that he is the prototypical Cover 2 corner?

4a - Frank Okam DT - Most of his major problems can be fixed by coaching. The real question is how receptive is he going to be to coaching if Rod can get to him he will be better than all but Ellis and Dorsey.

4b - Owen Schmitt FB - The FB is integral in the Run game and I think Schmitt is going to be something special at that position.

                            Round 5 - 7 take BPA.

Now tell me what you think.

I think Brandon Flowers will be a pretty high quality Cover 2 CB.. We should definitely look at him... which means we probably won't..
