Mike is a stand up guy, not really the disgruntled type to start rumors I do not think? My guess is by "other QB's" that were told Culpepper is the starter he was talking Dan (FA) & Jon (owed 500k bonus). Both strong Christians and both close friends with Mike who stay in contact in the off season and all live close to one another (Canton, Plymouth & Northville). Jon does not plan on coming back to the Lions (house is for sale already) he is pursuing ministry and spending time with family.
Not the smartest move with Culpepper due 2.5 million bonus and 2.5 in salary, but as long as they take a QB number 1 it will not matter to me between Culpepper or Kitna on the roster. Culpepper knows Linehans offense the best although he is not worth 5 million dollars. We have the cap room for it but still. And Dan O might have wanted more than 5 million so Culpepper may be cheaper than him. So I guess thats why Mayhew/Schwartz/Linehan would want Culpepper. And as of right now he would be the starter until hopefully Stafford grasps enough of the playbook and can be protected enough to have a chance.
Stanton is still an unknown IMO. He was injured for an entire year so this year was his rookie year essentially. He wasn't awful in the preseason either. The coaching staff hated him, but I hate this past coaching staff so whatever. Stanton did manage to throw a td pass in his limited action. However, if given the choice of Stafford or Stanton I'd take Stafford every time. Stanton most likely won't get an opportunity in Detroit. Wasted pick for sure, but bust we'll see. He's got a lot of work to do but he needs to have a chance.
Linehan/Culpepper/Johnson should be somewhat effective occasionally early next season. I'd be shocked if Detroit doesn't take Stafford or Sanchez in the the first round, but Culpepper is probably the right guy to be taking the reigns to start the 2009 season.
1- We passed on Puz.. who I didn't really like but would've been a better pick
2- We missed out on Justin Blalock, Chris Houston, and Tony Ugoh in the trade back
3- We picked Stanton ahead of LaMarr Woodley and David Harris. I also wanted Josh Wilson or Victor Abiamiri there..
I do think with a full training camp Culpepper will be a much better QB then last year. He still has a good deep ball. We messed up on his contract. No way anybody else would have gave him such a big option. He should be making around 1-1.5 million.
This isn't earth-shattering news by any stretch....exactly what I would expect. Draft Stafford, let him learn from the sidelines for the better part of the season if not the whole season and give him the reigns to the team for 2010. Daunte still has the ability to play some decent football.
The only thing that I hope is that having Daunte dosen't give the Lions brass a false sense of security and go OT #1 then wait and hope that Sanchez falls to them...
