Now that the draft is over, who is everyone's top targets for free agency? Obviously the players that actually hit free agency will depend on whatever rules we'll be under.
QB: We need a veteran that can both mentor Henne and push him, similar to Pennington. I also think we need to sign an UDFA with upside to either stash as a developmental guy or slip onto the practice squad because I don't think Brandstater is worth wasting any sort of spot on to 'develop.' If we are under the 2010 rules, Thigpen will likely be returning as a RFA too. There are a lot of veterans out there but I'm not sure which one really fits best. Ideal Scenario: Sign Marc Bulger and Josh Portis.
At OLB, we need to find someone that is good enough to start in case of an injury to Wake/Misi and is, at worst, a third down pass rush option that can spell Misi while he develops his skills. Ideal Scenario: Cliff Avril. Under 2010 rules he'd be restricted though. Not a whole lot of other options out there...bring back JT since BP is gone? Bring back Moses? Try and sign a bunch of UDFA types like Chinasa, Darbut, Addison, Marshall? Honestly wasn't a big fan of this OLB class in FA or the draft aside from a couple of the top guys so we'll probably just fill the depth with middle of the road and undrafted guys and hope to strike gold.
Speed back. Maybe Kory Sheets is the speed back, Sparano and company have consistently said they are 'intrigued' by him but don't really know what they have. He at least needs competition for the spot. Ideal Scenario: Sign DeAngelo Williams. Backup plan: Darren Sproles? Reggie Bush if he gets cut? UDFAs like Devine, Locke, Spann if we like Sheets?
I like the depth on the OL and DL for the most part although I wouldn't mind an upgrade at swing OT. I think we're set in the secondary, ILB, TE, WR, and specialists. Clay will likely be a TE so a FB to compete with Politte.
Anybody out there? Looks like we're getting Orton and Bush today and went with Jason Trusnik as our backup OLB/special teams ace. That covers the three needs I mentioned above...can't say I'm overly excited about any of them. If it doesn't work out and Sparano loses his job, the next regime is already going to be short two draft picks, likely a 3rd and 6th.
Pretty excited about bringing back Tony McDaniel and dumping Merling in the Orton trade though.
Not jumping up and down about the Bush trade but I do think he can help our offense become less predictable. Just hope he can stay healthy. And Orton isnt anything to write home about but he is better then Henne and thats exactly what we need. But who knows if that deal will happen. Im hoping though since he is our last good option.
