Balmer would be very tough to pass up and he probably is better value at that spot right there. It's tough to really choose; balmer would be a great addition as a replacement for Ellis and we would have a line of Koleman-Jenkins-Balmer..everyone on the line is 300+ pounders and pretty young. Hardy on the other hand, may not be better value, but is still good value and will give us a red zone threat that we don't have. He could be the young reciever clemens needs to "grow up" with and hopefully could take the role of #1 reciever.

It's a very tough call and i don't think we'll go wrong either way. The bottom line is that we are going to end up with a lot of very talented players available at that pick.

Jets sign free-agent TE Franks to 1-year deal

The New York Jets signed three-time Pro Bowl tight end Bubba Franks to a one-year deal Monday.

      • It says he will be the back-up to Baker. I guess they really didn't want to use a late round pick on a TE. Maybe they still will. Hopefully he can come in and be a great blocker and red zone threat.

It seems as though mangini has wanted to employ a multiple TE system for a while now, but couldn't find a TE that had the run blocking and pass blocking potential that franks has. In addition to another TE, he's been searching for a tough blocking FB and seems to have finally found that as well. I would imagine he got fed up with running trick plays and throwing the ball on 3rd and short; hopefully those times are behind us and we'll be able to play us some smash mouth football.

          • I dont think our style will be called smashmouth football.

            THATS ACTUALLY AN UNDERSTATEMENT...
Bill Callahan: Running Specialist now our Offensive line coach
Alan Faneca: Considered at the very least a top 3 Guard in the NFL. Great run blocker
Damien Woody: A definite upgrade from Clement and a guy who can anchor against massive DL as he used to be a guard and center against bigger NTs. (speed rush on pass protection not run blocking will be his weakness, bull rushers will be less effective)
Tony Richardson: Before Lorenzo Neal retired I would say he was the 2nd best blocking FB in the NFL. Now he's the best.
            Chris Baker & Bubba Franks:
this 2 TE set will be able to move the pile even if teams have a jailbreak run blitz on.
Thomas Jones: A strong back who likes to lineup about a mile behind the line of scrimmage and pound the sh!t out of the guy trying to tackle him.

Overall the OL will be better at run blocking and both Baker and Franks present enough (in fact each is a good threat) to run routes and catch. Defenses will have to be honest. But realistically. Those red zone situations where we cant score from the 4 yard likne, should be non existant. ESP if we get a leaper like Sweed or Hardy.

Imagine 4th and 1 on our own 48 yard line. If we get the 1st the games over or puts the game out of reach in some way. We just need 1 yard (last year I would have said punt) This year I would say Line up:
Line: Baker, Ferguson, Faneca, Mangold, Moore, Woody Franks
Backs: Clemens, Richardson, Tutt and Jones and see if ANYONE could collapse that line.

It excites me that we might be less explosive but safer with the ball and dictate the pace and style of the game with a strong run game, just like the steelers have been doing for years. ESP for a young QB. And if we can keep coles and get a big bodied WR our recievers on the field at any time would keep defenses on their heels. Coles Cotchery Hardy Franks and Leon
what are we going to do?
            -Screen
            -Jump Ball Deep
-Trips to the right and run behind franks faneca and brick.
-My favorite: Play action. ESP if done well (mainly why I liked Chad)

I like the idea of running to set up the pass is how teams parcells and belichick (unitl last season w moss) coach have won.

And imagine a power OL 2 TE set with Richardson, Jones and McFadden.

I think this type of style esp if we can get 1 or 2 OFFENSIVE playmakers. HR hitter in the Run game (mcfadden or a guy like chris johnson/jamall charles) and a big WR.

McFadden and Hardy would be exciting but I think its cost prohibitive.
Id prefer a trade down to bolster the defense so we can be equally excited about the pass rushing and run stuffing potential of the defense.
ideally draft day trade down in the 1st and trade Penn for a 3rd rd. and a future later rd (conditional pick) 5th for DROB
            1a) Groves-OLB
            1b) Balmer-DE
            2) Hardy-WR
            3) Charles-RB
            4a) Williams-CB
            4b) Goff-ILB
            5) Jackson- WR/ PR
            6) Richardson- OT
            7) William- S

I know Bubba Franks isn't exactly a pro bowler anymore but 6-6 270 is a big body in the run game and a tall and at least a decent recieving option perfect compliment for baker who is the smaller sure handed type of TE. I just think along with obviously being able to run better with faneca woody and richardson. Adding a big bodied TE (which sparked this post) like the patriots did last year with Kyle Brady will allow us to run at will (with what the boston called an additional OT...TEhybrid) and ultimately make the passing game more effective. And unlike Kyle Brady Bubba Franks has never carreid the nickname Bubba "Stonehands" Franks

Needless to say Im pumped about the offseason I just hope we can clear some cap room (trade drob penn and cut some useless players like D Barrett ETC and be able to sign a lot of quality draft picks) as Im sure you can tell Im not extactic about spending a lot of money on a high pick but I wouldnot be upset now looking at our run game set up if we took mcfadden and had unreal options on offense. OR took gholston for afformentioned reasons about a potentially deadly pass rush.

Im sure there are some haters or doubters who will just say well these signings are stupid and probably wont work out (without any reason except they game people too much money or they signed 30 year olds...side note the cap # with the exception of faneca and even there im sure there are conditions the Jets can get out of these contracts jenkins:weight; pace: sacks and playing time; woody: playingtime, weight and sacks allowed) I just think these signings represent an active attempt to get better this year and for the future by getting a lot of picks in the draft (which I think makes more sense) Our writing is on the wall. Were gonna come to games and sock people in the jaw. Thats a style we havent had since john riggins. Add some playmakers....deadly and effective for a while.

Ironically, ESPNnews is reporting that the Jets are close to an agreement on a new contract with Coles.

They are technically voluntary team workouts and really doesn't surprise me that he's not there. I don't think it demands that he be traded, but i does think it should alter how his teamates look at him. He was voted as the team captain; that's someone who is suppose to lead by example and that includes on the field and off the field. Off the field means; no getting in trouble with the police, staying out of the media for negative reasons and most definately attending all "voluntary" workouts so the younger guys see what's up. I hope it's a contract that works out for both teams, but i still would like to see us address WR this draft or next year.

Discussing team captain; I would like to see clemens get the nod from the team, becuase it would show that they support him and he should be the starting QB. You don't give chad the team captain role and sit him on the bench. On the other side of the ball, I would like to see david harris get it. As the ILB in our defense he basically is the captain and i'm imagining if Rhodes doesn't get it, it will be handed to harris.

As far as team captains go I think they are over rated. Just about every starting QB in the league wore the 'C'. Are they all leaders? I highly doubt it. For QBs it is more of a slap in the face if they don't get it. While I like Harris I dont think a 2nd year guy who has started what 8 games should be captain.

                          • with no trades id prefer...
                            1) Gholston-OLB
                            2) Hardy-WR
                            4a) Williams-CB
                            4b) Goff-ILB
                            6) Mattison-DE
                            7) Alridge- RB

That said I really do not want to pick at 6 with the drop off in talent for a substantial amount more than if we trade the pick.

For example if we traded the pick to dallas we would recieve at least their picks at 22 and 28 (we prob also get their 3rd rd next season maybe even this yr...thats the trade value dont go sayings its too much bc its basically exact)

paying 22 and 28 is a lot cheaper in terms of bonus money and cap number for this season...

                            2007 draft CAP #s
                            6: LaRon Landry: $8 million
                            22: Brady Quinn: $1.7 million
                            28: Joe Staley: $1.6 million

I think that is plenty of reason in such a good but not top heavy draft to trade down whether mcfadden gholston ryan ellis or dosey are on the board. to accumulate picks for this and or next year.

Hopefully mcfadden is there so we can milk the boys.

great news we announced we went to visit mcfadden...which for me says we prob dont want him bc the jets made this public the day the team rep went to discuss things with him. Remember clemens they snuck up to oregon to see him after making a big deal day of about jay cutler ...clemens report didnt come out for a couple of days... Smoke and mirrors tangini style on and off the field. They want to make it appear that they LOVE mcfadden so if and when hes on the board at 6 dallas or whoever would have to give up a lot or at least more considering. IMO it makes sense ESP bc besides his barfight which sidelined him with the toe injury which later required surgury (also NY clubs are a little better and crazier than ARK...sooooo can he adjust) but also he is set to be a dad TWICE OVER. NO the girl isnt having twins two different girls are pregnant with his kids.

Im not making moral judgements Im trying to think from a franchise perspective...will these two seperate yet equally volatile situations distract him or affect him in any way...becoming a dad is a big step but twice with two different girls and then being given a high stress job in NY where if you dont produce those two kids could go hungry. I dont know about you but Id say there is a potential (potential bc maybe this will make him work harder, but then again maybe itll hurt him) for McFadden to bust bc of the off the field issues and stress he keeps hearing about.

Just food for thought...McFadden fans dont get your panties in a bunch Im just passin on the word.

Short of calling the coin flip I dont think it has any relevance. I had heard that the NFL instituted it last year (C on the jersey) to create more of an internal leadership mechanism. The 'C' on the jersey isn't even mandatory for a team captain.
