  • I'm not talking about ability, I'm talking about style of play.

    • I think your mentality and your mental ability mean more to style of play. There have been plenty of soft-tossers out there, but Maddux is the most successful. He did the most with the least in terms of velocity, but he had sick movement, prepared well, and fielded his position better than everyone else.

      • Kendrick may not ever be able field as well, but he has only played one year, I think we need to give him time to develop.

        • I'm just pointing out that you are severely underrating Greg Maddux. That is all. Kendrick is average.

          • I'm not underrating Maddux!!! I am saying they have similar games in terms if STYLE not ability.

            • I don't think they do at all. Look at his stats:

              http://www.baseball-reference.com/m/maddugr01.shtml

Most of these stats are with a smaller strike zone. Remember, after 2000 MLB made the strike zone bigger to help quell the offensive ridiculousness. Even with all that BS, Maddux was utterly dominant.

Maybe you could make an argument that Maddux and Kendrick throw the same type of pitches, but they are nowhere close in any relevant way.

              • Once again, I am not talking about talent, or ability, or anything to describe how great anyone is. I know Maddux is an AMAZING pitcher who is bound for the HOF in his first opportunity. And I know that Kendrick is not quite as good as Maddux is/was/will be. But I am saying their style is similar. How they throw the ball, types of pitches, velocity, mentality are similar. Stats do very little to show the style of a pitcher, which is what I have been trying to talk about the whole time. Anyway, I'm getting tired of this, and I'm sure you are to, so I will at least put an end to it on my part. You can disagree, but I won't continue this debate until one of us gets pissed off.

                • They are both soft tossers. After that, the similarities end. I don't see Kendrick attacking hitters like Maddux. He's not supremely confident. He may get that confidence and mentality later, but right now, he's not much different than a Jeff Suppan or 2007 version of Glavine or Maddux. Just not enough there to win consitently.

                  • Moving on, has anyone heard about Lidge's progress? I would be much more comfortable if he threw in live action in spring training.

                    • Haven't heard any positiive or negative on him, but the pitching staff must be finding their arms, because there are greatly improved ovetr their last few games.

                        • Read on Fanball that Lidge could pitch in game action today. That is ridiculously encouraging.

                          • He must have had a lot of factors go in his favor during recovery for this to even be a possibility, plus the Phils must really want to see some of him, otherwise, he would be eased back a little more.

                            • A strong outing by Kendrick ought to boost his confidence.

                              • I'm glad Kendrick is getting better, but he doesn't have a lot of margin for error. He has to be near perfect to have success.
