  • Interesting segment from Scott's live chat:

    (2:55) [Comment From Kevin M.]
Will Singletary get cold feet and pass on Sanchez at #10 for a OLD/DE tweener he can groom and call his own?

(2:55) [Scott Wright:] If he does it will be a massive mistake. It could happen though.
It got me thinking. Ignoring the obvious Sanchez related issues, I wonder if Singletary would be more inclined to choose another ILB as opposed to OLB if moulding someone in his image turns out to be his thing. Add to that the fact that Ray Maualuga has come in for a visit.

I think it'd be both a waste and possible reach to indulge ourselves with our first rounder when we have bigger needs and you can find physical ILBs further down, but I do wonder if a Willis-Maualuga (at MIKE and TED respectively) would be a very good thing for our D...

    • I don't think they're high on Maualuga. I think they brought him in because of character concerns. Maualuga would be the highest drafted 3-4 TED in NFL history I believe. He's not even close to worth it. Especially when you can get a Jasper Brinkley in the 3rd or Frantz Joseph in the 5th.

      • A safety? A DE? A NT? A 3-4 OLB? An ILB, isn't Takeo Spikes is returning there?

Don't forget this team has a CB who will be going into his 14th NFL season in Harris, & Shawntae Spencer is coming off MCL surgery. Got to pick his replacement carefully, whoever it is is going to have lots of balls thrown his way as most offenses throw away from Clements.

I think he's on the roster.

I acutally wouldn't mind seeing Scotty Mac trade down, snag a few extra picks, and then package those picks and jump back into round one again.
If we stay at 10, i think it will be one of the tackles Oher or Andre Smith. Thats just the vibe im getting from guys like Maiocco and Barrows.

I thought this was funny. They compare Maybin to Haralson. This is for anyone that wants to replace Haralson with another HaralsonT.

That is a pretty terrible comparison no matter how you look at it. Their measureables coming out of college were completely different,

                Maybin: 6'4'', 253 lbs, 4.59 40-yard dash, 40.5'' vertical jump, 10'10'' broad jump, 2.66 20-yard dash, 1.54 10-yard dash, 22 225LB reps

                Haralson: 6'1'', 253 lbs, 4.78 40-yard dash, 34.5'' vertical jump, 9'5'' broad jump, 2.86 20-yard dash, 1.72 10-yard dash, 24 225LB reps

as was their production. Haralson played in almost every game in his college career (50 total games) with 32 starts and put up 21 sacks and 46.5 tackles for a loss over those 4 seasons. He was very polished coming out of college and almost no one saw any upside in him. Maybin is pretty much the complete opposite. He saw action in every game as a sophomore and did okay and put up huge numbers when he got his chance last year. His body still hasn't fully matured and he is nowhere near a finished project. Whoever made that comparison seriously has no idea what they were talking about.

                • The fact that his best-case comparison is Chad Brown.... ummmmm

                      • Also, I like Marlon Favorite as a late round Nose Tackle pick up.

                        +Good Bulk
+Stout at point of attack and plays with excellent leverage
+Occupies Blockers and Stuffs the run.
                        +Good Motor

A negative would be his injury history and his lack of pass rush technique and ability. I think he's worth a look in later rounds.

                        • Maybin could eventually develop into another Chad Brown (Colorado; Pittsburgh Steelers) at the next level, but the NFL's love for pass rushers, rather than looking at the "complete" picture has spelled doom and gloom for a lot of teams taking "tweeners" early in the draft. Undersized defensive ends often fail to adjust to life as outside linebackers. Could Maybin be the next flash in the pan? If used strictly as an edge rusher, he brings good value, but that is not why teams pay a hefty price to ink a first-round pick.
They've got a good point there.

Tarell Brown wears no. 25, he's listed as a 4th stringer backing up Clements in last yr's preseason mag. Were you thinking of Reggie Smith, no. 31? That I would believe.

I hope neither of them falls through the cracks as sooooo many players have with this team, they need them both. Note that this defense gave up more points than anyone other than the Raiders last yr. & I think was 32nd in that category the previous yr. -- they're still awful despite Patrick Willis & bringing in Takeo & Justin Smith.

Reggie Smith has been mentioned by local Bay Area sports press as Roman's replacement at FS, Roman has degenerated into an embarrassment out there. All the coaching changes, the fatal death-blow ownership change within the DeBartolo Dynasty, Dr. John York's obsession with the new Santa Clara stadium that will not happen, lots of factors for inexplicable personnel decisions with this team. I'm still in mourning for LB Brandon Moore who was cut in camp last yr, what do I know....

But I do think they need to find a quality corner opposite Clements & spend the #10 on their many other great glaring needs.

That's not true. The worst defense was by far the Lions, giving up 517 points. The Niners gave up 381 which put them at #23. Not very good but not the worst. It looks worse than it was IMO because of the insane amount of turnovers in the first part of the year. They were down to about 19 points per game the 2nd half of the year which would've put them at #8 in the league as far as average is concerned if they could've kept that up the entire year.

                              • No. Tarell Brown was getting the most playing time of any CB not named Clements and Harris. He was practically a shutdown CB in the Jets and Redskins games.

And Dashon Goldson is Roman's replacement at FS. Smith has been playing SS.

Still mourning for Brandon Moore? I guess all 32 teams forgot to get the memo that he deserves to be an NFL LB.
