  • Why would the Chargers trade Rivers? Heck, why would they franchise him? I would be surprised if they do not lock him up for the next decade before his contract expires.

If the 49ers wanted to package multiple 1st round picks for a QB they would've done it for Drew Brees in 2006 or Jay Cutler this offseason.

If Hill and/or Smith fail in 2009, I would have no problem trading both first rounders to SD for Rivers. Rivers would only be 28 years old going into the 2010 season and unlike a rookie, already established and worth the huge monetary investment.

Plus, Rivers would already have his RB in Gore (Tomlinson), possible TE in Davis (Gates) who hopefully has a good 2009 season, a playmaking WR in Crabtree (Jackson), a younger and deeper supporting cast and just as good if not better OL.

        Thoughts?????
I'd love it if we could get Rivers but it's not realistic. We'll have to look to the draft for our QB. I wouldn't mind us picking up Snead.

Probably Eric Berry. He can be a Bob Sanders type FS.

Cutler is good but Rivers is better and unlike Cutler, doesnt have an attitude problem. Brees was actually an UFA in 2006 and signed with NO. I wanted him back then but knew it wasnt going to happen since we drafted Smith a year earlier.

They would franchise him if they cant reach a deal. They trade him because he asks for too much or wants out Think about it, a year from now, Merriman, Tomlinson, possibly Sproles who's playing uner the one year franchise tag and others may be gone. Rivers may want out. You never know. **** happens.

Its a dream/longshot or whatever you want to call it but if possible, I would much rather trade for Rivers instead of using both first rounders to move up and draft a rookie QB but thats just me.

That's debatable. Besides this incident, which was actually Cutler reacting to being but out on a trade when he was supposed to be THE MAN in Denver. On the other hand, I absolutely hate Phillip Rivers. He has all the tools along with size but he comes off as dick and someone I would love to hurt.

I agree in style, but I also believe that Bob Sanders is a Strong Safety. To be honest, Strong or Free, if BOTH safeties can cover and stop the run I could care less what player plays what position. Certain defensive schemes have less and less a differential betrween the two positions.

If you want dreams/longshots to come true for the 49ers why not hope that Shaun Hill or Alex Smith become top tier NFL quarterbacks? It's just as feasible in many ways.

                      • There is a 100000 times better chance of Smith or Hill being middle-of-the-pack or a little better starting QBs that can lead us to the playoffs than there is of us somehow trading for Rivers

Admittedly, yes. I find him to be extremely passionate, even if it comes off as dickish. So, I find that to be a quality that makes me root for him. He's not off committing crimes or hurting people, he's simply passionate about the game, and I like that.

First, there's no damn guarantees in life and no guarantee that Cutler was going to be the man in Denver. As you should already know, a new head coach usually brings a new regime who bring in their own players. Second, if I was Cutler, I would have been pissed off too for his new head coach trying to acquire Cassel but him saying that he didnt want a trade and out of Denver when he did is what really makes him an asshole. He's two-faced. Why would you want him on our team as our QB? I wouldnt and im happy we didnt trade for him because he's not worth half of what Chicago gave up and the only reason Chicago gave up so much to acquire him is because the regime there knows that if they suck this season, they wont be around to use those draft picks that they traded away anyway.

Third, why exactly is Rivers a dick? I posted why I dont like Cutler so post why you dont like Rivers and why you think that he's a dick.

                              • Personally I'd rather trade both first rounders for the map to the fountain of youth. It's just as likely as getting Rivers and we could bring back Joe Montana...

The sides are still far apart in contract negotiations and Crabtree's agent, Eugene Parker, is known for holdouts. Crabtree wants to be paid like a top-five player because that's where he "should have" gone. Crabtree is already far behind the 49ers' other receivers as he missed the entire offseason program (foot). This could be more trouble. Jul. 25 - 10:41 am
Talk of a holdout's been floating around. I personally think the "should have been picked" argument is ridiculous. It's bad enough that franchises have to pay out huge amounts for unproven players, but to have to pay even more based on conjecture? Ridiculous. He was picked at #10 he gets #10's money, which will make him a millionaire overnight anyway.

It's a shame that Crabtree might tarnish an offseason that's provided him with nothing but good press clippings (for example Singletary having to tell him to ease off in training) by putting his new team over a barrel. If all goes to plan he'll obviously earn the money, but bearing in mind our recent history with number one receivers I'd say he definitely has to earn it on a second contract.

Hopefully this can all be resolved quickly and we'll get him into camp, but it's possible cause for concern.
