  • Manusky might be even worse than Singletary. When Nolan was here we all blamed the soft zone defense (which Nolan called the "Big Nickel") on him but I think it is becoming clear that Manusky had at least something to do with it unless Singletary is forcing him to do it as well.

If Singletary is fired I would rather see Mike Johnson take over. He has not shown much proficiency for making game time adjustments yet, I think that comes with experience calling plays, but his scripted plays at the beginning of the game seem to always work. That at least tells me that he can prepare the team well between games if not during. Singletary and Manusky haven't shown the ability to do either

Manusky does not hold attention in a room like Sing who is a well-respected HOF LB with "the stare." Sing and his "motivation" factor and that he had credibility from his playing days is what allowed the Niners to be prisoners of the moment in keeping him after he strung a few wins together two seasons ago. The players do seem to like and respect Sing a great deal; they just don't win for him which is the bottom line. I think they look at a big name HC regardless at the end of the year. Let's hope they choose the right one.

IDK who would take the job. Not Gruden, not Cowher. Gruden will replace Wade Phillips at Dallas, mark my words, b/c Jerry Jones will throw so much $ at him it will Parcells' $5M/yr. salary look paltry by comparison. The 9ers have so much $ tied up in their new stadium I don't think they can lure a big name there.

The Giants in the Series & the Raiders blowout win in Denver with a franchise-rcd. 59 points hung on them moved the 9ers story with Smith's arm in a sling photo to below the fold, & that's a good thing. That sucking sound you hear from SF is the whole ******* 2010 yr. slipped away at midseason.

Yes I recall Nolan's "Big Nickel" defense with the deep zones & only rushing 3 guys, it's just a dressed up Prevent Defense, the one that prevents you from winning. And that's what they did, all it takes is one 25-yd pass down the undefended sidelines + some YAC yardage, quick step out of bounds & viola! instant FG range.

9ers dominated 90% of the game b/c Gore's running attack > than Deangelo Williams running attack since the 9ers better defense could key on him & stop it, & Moore's passing was more self-destructive than that of Alex Smith, who has gone 2 games now without an INT. It was the atrocious OL play that aided in tying their season rcd. for penalties (11) in a game, false starts, etc, letting a passrusher in free on Smith who's as brittle as an eggshell, he flopped on his shoulder & that was it for him.

        4-13 3rd down conversions
        99 rushing yds.
2 sacks for 13 yds lost
        11 penalties for 81 yds
almost 13 mins < opponent in time of possession
Only 1 INT but it was the difference-maker

That's a 2010 9ers loss in a microcosm. Another game where the defense can't hold a lead & the offense can't play catchup with only one score needed in the final seconds. And how much of that is coaching? Uhh, a lot. 1 win at nearly midseason assures that some changes will be made: at QB, at HC, everywhere but DC.

        • I think this stat is pretty telling as to how bad of a HC Singletary really is:

Alex Smith's qb rating under Raye: 65

Alex Smith's qb rating under MJ: 85

How could a HC be so clueless when assessing the effectiveness of the playcalling and strategy? Every single fan imaginable could tell that Raye was out of his league, except our HC, who finally realized it 3 weeks in. I truly believe that Sing is worse than Nolan, he was simply at the right place at the right time, and cashed in bigtime off of a few meaningless games.

I now think it is time for Nate Davis. If Nate shows promise, hey we might be able to put him out there with a good offensive HC next year and get results. If Nate blows, hey that gives us a shot at Locker or Luck. If anything, it'll shut up the annoying fanbase.

          • Some people, I am hoping most are doing it for jokes, are saying Carr needs a week of practice to get his stuff in order.

Remember when Smith came out and started the 2nd half and was in the zone?

I could see Carr's limitations in some preseason play but it was horrifying watching him play Sunday.

            • I think they'll play Carr by default this week, lose another game, and then "regroup" (Sing's favorite ******* word), "watch the tape" (his favorite phrase) and then go with a different QB (assuming Alex isn't back). It'll further prove that they are slowly searching for answers and only discover things after the fact (meaning after a loss).

I'll never forget it. I actually thought Sing and Raye would see that and realize that a philosophy change needed to happen. I'll never forget Billick raving about our potential in that type of Offense, he seemed genuinely excited for us.

I kept thinking of that performance yesterday, which made Carr's performance seem even more ghastly.

Nah. I dont see Jones going after Gruden or Cowher because he's the GM and wants total control which is the reason why Jimmy Johnson and Bill Parcells are long gone. They wanted more control and Jones didnt want to give it to them and well, thats why you have Wade "yes sir" Phillips as your HC. I personally think Cowher would be a better fit for DAL than Gruden but I would be shocked if either one goes to DAL. I just cant see Jones massive ego taking a back seat to the HC. Not going to happen.

As for SF, having a new stadium in a few years would be a positive for the next HC because he'll be the first HC to be a part of that era.

If Jed York isnt content on losing like he says he is, he'll go all out for Jon Gruden. $10m a year, no problem. Welcome to SF!!!!!

Time for the ******* Yorks to stop being cheap assholes and go out and hire a top tier HC and staff. Then, some top free agents, a good draft and there ya go.

                    • And as much as I want Singletary gone, in now way shape or form shuld he be fired before January. I hate mid-season changes. They NEVER work and if he guy taking over does good, he'll be the permanent HC and I dont want anyone who's currently in SF to be the next HC period. I want an ex-HC who has the experience and knows what he's doing and is offensive based.

If the next HC isnt Jon Gruden (or at least Cowher, Billick, etc.), then well, I'll be the first to say...........

Gruden is definitely the top choice, but we will at least end up with Billick or Harbaugh. I have no doubts about it, the Yorks will definitely pay for a good HC, there is too much on the line right now.

                          Stupid question - who's Harbaugh?

                          • So, is it safe to say that a majority are in favor of the Niners going back to a 4-3 Defense next year, (subject to incoming coaching philosophy influence)?

I really like the 3-4 when it's played well, but that is just not happening with the Niners on a consistent basis as they need more specialists. 3-4 teams seem to need to have specific specialists to be elite: pass rushing specialists, run-blocking specialists, tackling and gap specialists, cover specialists, and ball-hawking specialists. They have a few of these specialists on the team, but I think they would be better off at this point with going to a 4/3 next year. They would be a pass-rushing LE away from a decent squad and the loss of Franklin wouldn't hurt the team as much as it would in a 3/4. I think Lawson would be a unique threat in that case, and would be a better fit as a fast, ranging OLB in the 4-3. He could arguably line up as a DE (like he was in college) at that point too, but I'd rather have him as a beast OLB.

Jim Harbaugh, HC of Stanford. Brother of Baltimore Ravens HC John Harbaugh. Former Colts QB and Raiders QB coach.

For HC considerations, i'd like to interview Harbaugh and Gruden, both are offensive guys. I don't know how people feel about defensive coaches after our OC disaster the last 8 years, but i'd also like to interview Rob Ryan, DC of the Browns. He's the twin of Rex Ryan and has a solid resume other than his time with the Raiders.

Besides those 3, and looking at other solid offensive playcallers across the league, other guys i'd like to interview are Brian Schottenheimer (Jets OC) and Kyle Shannahan (Redskins OC, son of Mike Shannahan). For the Rooney Rule requirement, i'd interview Todd Bowles (Dolphins Secondary coach, part of Parcells coaching tree) and maybe Leslie Frazier (Vikings DC).
