The team went backwards in the first six days. They needed to re-sign offensive lineman David Baas to replace Eric Heitmann at center, but they lost Baas to the Giants. Linebacker Takeo Spikes left for the Chargers. They cut cornerback Nate Clements and failed to talk him into re-signing.

      • **** John Clayton!

Being reported that we just re-signed Franklin and also FS Madieu Williams, who was realeased by Minny last week, to a one year deal. Williams is a older version of Goldson, though he tackles better. But he comes on the cheap, something Goldson would not have. He'll push both Reggie Smith and Taylor Mays. A Reggie Smith(FS)/Madieu Williams(SS) backfield wouldnt actually be that bad, IMO.

        • And now it looks like we'll lose Dashon Goldson for Madieu Williams

He can't be compared to Clements at this point. Clements was due $17 Million this season from the 49ers. Is Rogers an upgrade to Tarell Brown? That's the more important question.

              • Williams is horrible I guess we had to find a way to bring back the dazzling memories of Mark Roman.

Injury news Dontavia Bogan UDFA torn ACL and broken bone in his knee done for the year Nate Byham torn ACL also done for the year.

                • Is Brandon Carr of the Chiefs still a FA? If so, he'd be my favorite CB left on the market.

Williams a good character guy. That's all I've got. The signing pissed Goldson off. He's blowing up his Twitter.

At least Gore was back in SF today. They definitely have the cap room to give him an extension.

Carr is restricted probably has a 1st round tag on him.

                    • Umm, I think this is the point where I hit the power button and restart the offseason.
The Brian Sabean sig is no more. I disagreed with you on so many levels. And then you went out and built a dynasty. I am lame.

Well seeing as the 49ers aren't spending money anyways, they might as well waste it on Clements. At least the money will be used in some fashion.

I'll take my chances with Brown. At least we don't know he's absolutely terrible yet.

                        • What I don't understand is that the team HAS to spend 99% of their salary cap. The only sizable contract is Ray Mac. It's not like they can leave $15 mill under the cap. Per the new CBA, the 99% is mandatory.

So I guess they are just going to spend the rest on their own guys before the season ends.

Dude are you serious? Smith and Williams? I'm a Reggie Smith fan but this is getting ridiculous. Our D has gaping holes everywhere (insert porn reference)...disgusting.

To my understanding, that part of the new CBA doesn't go into effect until the 2013 season. So they don't have to spend money. But they are trying to build a new stadium and that can't happen with a struggling team so they can't tank a season and not be competitive. Hopefully, there's a method to madness.

No bigger than gapping hole we had last year. And that was with a DC who's scheme was to play it safe....lots of zone, off-man coverage and NO creative blitzes. One thing about Fangio, he WILL scheme to the strengths of the personel and WILL employ a more attacking-style defense. Those two points alone makes the defense and the secondary better.

Now as far as Williams and Smith go, it could work. Williams is a physical guy in the box and pretty good tackler. In todays league you need a SS more adapt in coverage than a headhunter in the running game. Im not saying would even beat out Mays but if he does, he would be a experienced starter, playing a position which could help mask some of his deficencies in coverage. Last year our starting SS for our first game was Michael Lewis....Williams isnt just some camp fodder. He was once looked at as one of the rising young free safeties in the league. He has ability.

I've already gone on record saying I thought Reggie Smith was a more natural FS. He's a better athlete than Goldson and and in my estimation, has more range than Goldson. Only time will if Im correct but I believe we can get the most out of his abilities. Goldson's agressiveness, especially in the run game left big holes on play-action. Smith seems more discplined and more sound. Maybe Im looking at things through rose-colored glasses but we have talent. Just have to see if a coach like Donatell can get the most out of that talent.
