According to Trotter, before Mike Singletary made his final choice for offensive coordinator, he brought the two finalists, Raye and Hue Jackson, and had them sit down and talk football with the rest of his assistants, both offensive and defensive. After the session, Singletary then asked the assistants to make a choice. According to Trotter, it was unanimous in favor of Raye.
I like how Singletary let his staff voice an opinion in the matter, even if he was going to take Raye to begin with.

If we're really going to be a run first team, it might make sense to invest a relatively high pick on a RB to have a nice 1-2 combo.

It'd be nice, but we have greater needs and RB is always a deep position if you build the right supporting cast/scheme around it.

        • I think it's pretty obvious that the greatest need in our backfield right now is our FB of the future.

The FB is really going to make this offense run, ala Tony Richardson in KC. Hopefully we pickup Quinn Johnson, bc from what he showed in Sr. bowl he should get drafted at a good spot by us.

Johnson seems like the devastating lead blocker and short yardage specialist that could really help us out.

Weaver's a better pickup imo, doesn't sacrifice a draft pick...

            • Leonard Weaver would be a huge win but I think someone like Quinn Johnson would be good. I would just prefer Weaver, especially since I'd rather him be a Niner than somewhere else and helping another RB beat us.

If we're going to be this run offense that Singletary wants i think getting a mauling RT is a big focus. But RB is a big need if that's the case. I wouldn't take a RB at pick 10 but i wouldn't be surprised if we considered a RB as high as our 2nd round pick.

                • As we go forward and free agency and all of the other things, well have to sit down when the time is right and look at that and deal with that. But I really think that in looking at Jimmy Raye and what he brings to our organization, Im just excited about him talking about our offense from the front of the offensive line to the quarterback to the running back and really looking at how everybody plays a part in that. Not just the quarterbacnk. For right now, I feel very good about Shaun Hill and well have to see what happens with Alex Smith, and well have to go from there.

could sing be dodging the question here? i mean it's like he hasnt realy sweated smith at all here.

I think all he's saying is that Shaun's his guy (at least it seems implied) and when he says "we'll have to see what happens" he's probably just alluding to how Alex needs to restructure if he wants to come back next year. I dont think it's anything that requires 'reading between the lines.'

                    • We'll never no whats happening behind the scenes but Coach Sing cant come out singing the praises of Alex in public until his deal gets restructured. Doing so would just drive up Alex's bargaining position and salary.

Its smart to be as non committal as possible until everything is finalised.

                        • Weaver would be an awesome pickup, but I would love Quinn Johnson as a consulation prize.

We're always going to have other needs than second runningback, but i think in the longterm view, it makes sense to get a second starter type back now. It could possibly extend Frank's career, would keep both of our RBs fresher as the season went on, and would give other teams someone else to have to gameplan against. I think it makes tons of sense, actually... I don't think I'd want us to spend our first round pick on an RB unless we traded down (and in that case I'd want Knowshon, NOT Beanie Wells) but in the 2nd and 3rd rounds? Yeah, I think it would be a smart pick. In fact, I wish we'd done something like this last year-- Ray Rice would look good in scarlet and gold.

Quinn cant catch or run with the ball. All he does is block. If they got Weaver it would bring another threat and that short yardage guy we need, along with his blocking.

                              • If we look for a FB in Free Agency, keep an eye out for Tony Richardson. He's worked with Raye before and is a UFA. Wherever he goes, the running offense shines. He was with KC (under Raye). He was blocking for Adrian Peterson his rookie year. And he was with the Jets this year, paving the way for Thomas Jones and Leon Washington. He's one of the best lead blockers in the game.
