  • 2008 Draft Team Needs

I have called the last 2 year's needs almost perfectly...said Gaines Adams would be a Buccaneer during the Music City Bowl game vs. Kentucky in December and I thought we were going to take Marcus McNeil in round 1 in 2006, but I think we would have taken him in round 2 if he was still on the board, but we went with Trueblood instead.

Here are what I think are our FIRST DAY team needs in 2008:

    1. Speedy WR to replace Galloway: a few players I think could fit the bill are Mario Manningham, Early Doucet, and DeSean Jackson (who doubles as a KR/PR, which we need to replace Buchanon/Owens).

    2. Stud DTs: we need both a stud NT and a stud UT for next year's draft. I think we will target the NT later like in round 4 or 5...look for guys like Sedrick Ellis, DeMario Pressley, and Glenn Dorsey to be targeted by the Bucs in round 1.

    3. Left Defensive End: A few guys I love are Chris Long and Lawrence Jackson. We need someone opposite Gaines Adams to stop the run on the left side and provide a pass rush and can attract the double team away from Adams in the future.

    Potential Needs:
*CB if Zemaitis doesn't work out
*LB if Black doesn't work out
*C if Buenning doesn't work out at his new position
*TE if Alex Smith never steps up

    Am I missing anything?

I'm not really a fan of deciding our 2008 needs before the 2008 season is over but those are all probable need areas.

Also throw in QB if Simms flops again.

We should realistically wait till we have played our last game of the season. However, being a NFL draft forum, it will be discussed all year so it is too be expected.

I think CB could be a serious need, because Kelly will likely be gone, and Barber will be 32 or so. Zemaitis will hopefully get more PT, and I still think Tanard Jackson will play corner (I don't give a care that he's listed at safety, I think he'll end up there), but CB could really be a need.

QB: A franchise QB could be in order if Simms struggles. Gruden doesn't like young QBs so I can't see us drafting one before the 2nd round.

RB: This is an underrated need. Pittman is aging and Cadillac has injury concerns. A first-day RB could be an option if the value is there. Look for bulkier RBs that can catch the football.

FB: We could draft a replacement for Alstott. A punishing blocker or offensive weapon could fit the bill. We can be creative with this position.

WR: This position needs to be addressed early. Michael Clayton's success could decide just how early, but speed is needed either way.

TE: Can't see us drafting one at the moment.

OT: This year could be the year we draft a franchise LT. We have the option of grooming one for a year or so and Gruden can't get enough big bodies on the line.

OG: Late depth is the only possibility.

C: A mid-rounder could be drafted to compete with Buenning.

DE: Another underrated need. A replacement for Spires at LE is crucial and there's plenty of talent in this draft class.

DT: Not as big of a need as many expect. A future replacement could be in order for Hovan but I can't see us drafting one early. Wyms has plenty left in the tank while Peterson is a nice project for the future.

LB: Really unlikely for one to be drafted at all. We have youth and depth.

CB: A possible need. Kelly won't be around much longer while Barber is aging. This position could be addressed anywhere in the draft.

S: Only a need if Jackson plays CB. We could draft a FS to compete with Will Allen.

            ST: Only UDFAs here.

LT will be our biggest need

QB might be a close 2nd

UT is 3rd, but in reality it may 1st

              WR is 4th

CB, C, #2 TE, and #2 RB may be needs depending on how things pan out

I think we could get a legit LT if we are picking somewhere in the top 20 next year. It should be a good year for LT.

The only problem I see with that statement is that if we are in the position to grab a Franchise QB for the 2nd year in a row and 3rd time out of 4 years, I doubt whether Gruden will still be employed in Tampa.

What if Garcia performs well, and Simms ends up out of the picture? We could end up being a playoff team, but still in need of a franchise QB since Garcia will be nearly 40.

There is this myth that Gruden dislikes young players, and especially young QBs. It simply isn't true. The truth is, Gruden dislikes players that he can't trust. Most of the time, young players are prone to making more mental mistakes than physical ones, and Gruden has a short fuse for such things. A perfect example is Michael Clayton. Michael Clayton played a lot his rookie year, because Michael Clayton gained Gruden's trust early in Training Camp.

I think Gruden would die to have a young franchise QB for his offense. A guy with top intangables, and a very sharp mind. Someone like Jay Cutler, Phillip Rivers, Drew Brees, etc. If he has a shot at Brian Brohm, and Chris Simms has worked his way out of the fold, than I could see Gruden falling for Brohm

If Chris Simms flops we need a franchise QB who can sit behind Garcia for a season and then take over the reigns.

Whats done is done, but this was my point concerning Quinn this season, does anyone have a list of FA qb's for next year, because I'm praying we're not in a position to get Brohm next season.

The only QB's in free agency worth a shot are:

                        Kyle Boller
                        Marc Bulger
                        Rex Grossman

Outside of Bulger, there is probably no QB that would really improve on our current situation. Boller and Grossman may have potential, but are they any better than Simms?

None of those would succeed in Tampa. MAYBE Bulger, if he wasn't dead after the first snap.

I really don't understand how LT is a need when we have Petigout.

He isn't Orlando Pace but he isn't bad either. He's a solid LT and we don't necessarily need a stud there unless a great one falls to us in the draft (and doesn't have character issues like Yatta).

I really see us going 1) speedy WR, 2) Left Defensive End, or 3) Defensive Tackle in round 1...maybe TE if we have a late round 1 pick and we can draft for value.

Petitgout is a fine stop-gap starter for now but a replacement needs to be groomed and drafting one next year would be a perfect situation. It's too early to say he needs a replacement but he is aging and injury prone so we should draft a LT sooner rather than later.
