  • Adding Depth and the Offseason

One of the Skins problems in recent years has been depth. I am not a big fan of the London Fletcher-Baker signing, on account of the fact that I don't think he significantly upgrades, and he forces Rocky McIntosh to wait another year (granted, the length of the Fletcher-Baker deal is fine), but what it does do is create depth for the Skins at LB, with McIntosh being a versatile guy off the bench (at least, I'm betting Marshall wins the weakside job).

The Smoot signing upgrades the secondary, which needed a lot of help, as the depth with guys like Rumph, Jimoh, Wright just wasn't good enough. Ross Tucker signing adds some OL depth to join Pucillo (although, I imagine another OL or two will be added, as LaCanfora hints at in his blog).

Overall, the offseason has been positive in that regard. If they are able to pull off a Bly trade and move down and accumulate picks, they'll still get a solid DL talent likely, and they'll be able to further build up the depth on the team. Ideally, you'd like to add depth pieces, in particular, at DE, DT, S, OL, TE, and perhaps a bigger receiving option to help Jason and another CB.

Not a flashy offseason, but this has the potential to be one of the more solid Redskins offseasons in recent memory, and with a good draft, plus development from Jason Campbell, could have them pushing back up sooner than later. I'd love for Betts and Portis to be kept, as I think that'd be a nasty combination that would protect Campbell a lot.

Except we can throw the offseason down the drains if we do a dumb trade for Bly like I have been hearing like #6 for Bly and their first rounder.

Yes, I agree, that would throw the offseason in the crapper if they did a Bly and 21 for number 6. That would be horrid. If it's any of the previous iterations where the Redskins get additional picks, that'd be fine. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

I like the Skins offseason biz so far. Quitely chucking underperformers, while signing solid players, for depth, as written so far. If they do want Bly, jeez, no draft picks traded please ... this draft class got a few impact d-line players.

Didn't know where else to put it within the Redskins board, but LOVE the Macklin signing. Smart cheap signing that fills a depth need at a critical position. With Springs back, they have depth at CB now.

            Great signing 1 year 760,000.
