New GM means new direction in Charlotte

Charlotte, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers brass have opted to go in a different direction and have hired former New Orleans Saints director of football administration, Diabsoule. He had this to say upon officially becoming the new GM for a division rival: "The Carolina Panthers have been a strong franchise since first coming into the league. I am grateful for the opportunity presented to me here in Charlotte and will be aggressively pursuing all avenues available to us this offseason to get the Panthers back where they belong: on top of the NFC South and in Super Bowl contention".

There appears to be a lot of work ahead of him as the Panthers finished with the worst record in the NFL this season and hold the first pick in the draft. They are also without their second round pick (pick #33) due to a trade with New England last year. That has not deterred Diabsoule from speaking boldly about the future in Carolina. "We will be actively seeking trade opportunities to build this team through the draft. Right now we are not looking at trading the #1 pick in the draft but if a team blows us away with an offer then we will look into it".

There is no speculation right now as to who the Panthers are looking at with the first pick. "Right now, if we maintain the first pick in the draft, we will take Andrew Luck out of Stanford. He's a once in a lifetime product that can be the face of the franchise. We have conducted several interviews with him and absolutely love him as a fit for our team. He will be our selection if we hold onto that pick" said Diabsoule.

While it looks like they will be with that pick there are several teams that have called to inquire about the cost of the first pick due to Luck being highly coveted. "We have been in preliminary discussions with several franchises. Nothing has been established and if we do trade the pick then it will be for the best possible offer" Diabsoule was quoted as saying.

Lions extend OT Backus; CB Houston too

Chris McCosky / The Detroit News

Allen Park --Just days before the 2011 NFL Draft the Detroit Lions have announced contract extensions for two players.

Backus, who still has one year left on the six-year contract he signed prior to the 2006 season, signed a 2-year, $18 million extension. The deal includes $7.5 million in guarantees. The contract extension will keep Backus in a Lions uniform through the 2013 season.

Backus had the best year of his career this past season, allowing only 3.5 sacks and committing just three penalties all season. Despite having his ups and downs throughout his career, Backus has started all 160 games at left tackle since being drafted by the Lions in 2001. Barring a freak injury, it looks like he can add 48 more games to that streak.

Cornerback Chris Houston, who was acquired from Atlanta before last season for a sixth-round pick, was re-signed by the team. Houston signed a 3-year deal. The monetary terms of the contract were not immediately available. Houston is expected to be the #2 or the nickel cornerback for the Lions next year, depending on which direction they go in the draft.

Vikings announce new GMs and Head Coach

The Minnesota Vikings have announced who will lead their team into the future. The team announced today that Prock and marshallb will be the co-GMs. The two only said that they "were excited about the opportunity and were grateful to Zygi Wilf and his family and the whole Vikings organization for the chance that we're given." Vikings owner Zygi Wilf said that the GMs would have full say over the coaching search.

The co-GMs got together and talked over the situation, and came to the assumption that the team's best option moving forward was to stick with Leslie Frazier. Prock said "I like Frazier as our coach, the team plays hard under him, and defensive minded coaches love to run the ball, which is what this team is built for and should have been doing for a long time."

                    Ravens GMs Back in Business

Baltimore, M.D - The Ravens are proud to announce that renowned Co-GMs A Perfect Score (APS) and TACKLE have retained control of the Ravens front office and are ready to participate in yet another NFLDC Forum Mock. Known for their aggressive style of drafting and willingness to move up or down depending on how the board falls, APS and TACKLE have shown a knack for manipulating the mock draft process and almost always end up with a stellar class of rookies. Back again, they plan to approach the Forum Mock with the same tenacity and determination they always do.

In other news, the Ravens have announced the unexpected resigning of offensive tackle Jared Gaither. Though it at first seemed as though Gaither would be shipped out for a pick, contract negotiations took a leap forward when Gaither agreed to stay in Baltimore if he was restored to his former position of left tackle. GMs APS and TACKLE agreed that famous lineman Michael Oher would be better utilized on the right side, and Gaither signed a 4 year contract extension worth approximately 36 million dollars. This signing helps restore the Ravens offensive line to its 2009 status as one of the best young lines in the league. With offensive guard Ben Grubbs also signing an extension, the Ravens look poised to continue with their powerful running games and hope to protect franchise QB Joe Flacco better in the future.

Furthermore, early word out of the Ravens organization is that both Cam Cameron and Greg Mattison will be let go in the near future. The Ravens have confirmed that former Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips will take over the defensive coordinator job. No word on who will replace Cameron, if he is indeed let go. The Ravens were mum as to the future of their offensive coordinator.

                      BRUCE ARIANS FIRED

We have learned that offensive cordinator Bruce Arians has been let go of his duties for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Arians, the OC since 2007, had an inability to make in game adjustments and calls. His lack of points, despite high offensive numbers, were a real concern for Steelers GM HinesWardJr.

"We appreciate everything Bruce has done for our organization, but we are not where we want to be on offense. We wish Bruce the best of luck in his future."

HinesWardJr, Dan Rooney, and Mike Tomlin will be gathering a list of potential coaches for their vacancy.

Too Much Luck To Pass Up

Charlotte, N.C. -- Early rumors from inside the Carolina Panthers organization indicate that they will select Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the first pick in the draft.

Luck, the prototypical quarterback, possesses an excellent pedigree, super accuracy, strength, and touch, excellent build, and has played against elite Pac-10 competition while being coached by who many consider one of the best college coaches around.

While this may strike some as adding an unneeded luxury since Carolina drafted their supposed quarterback of the future last year when they selected Jimmy Clausen out of Notre Dame with their second round pick, Panthers G.M. Diabsoule has gone on record stating that Luck is a once-in-a-lifetime prospect that could turn a franchise around.

The Panthers have several trade possibilities open to them as many teams have been interested in trading up for the opportunity to draft the Stanford junior but Carolina holds the keys to the castle and rumors have it that they are demanding a king's ransom for the 1st pick in the draft, a ransom that not many teams, if any, are willing to pay.

                          Raiders Are Willing

Oakland Raiders GM RaiderNation has told the media today he is willing to trade for a veteran OT. "I feel that Veldheer can take the LT spot for us, but RT is still an issue. We are looking around for a veteran who can help in the run blocking. We plan to slide Langston Walker to RG if a deal can be worked out"

RaiderNation also address the draft plans. "Right now we are planning on letting the draft playout what we will do. If a certain player(s) fall we will contact teams. We have alot of needs but getting another impact rookie that can start from day 1 like (Rolando) McClain or (Lamarr) Houston or Jared Veldheer is what we need."

As for the trade block," Right now we have OLB Thomas Howard, DT John Henderson, CB Chris Johnson and RG Cooper Carlisle are guys we can trade right now."
