And as for the simple story point, most movies don't have terribly complicated plots. And that's not my problem with Avatar, although it is a deterrent for me. I don't like the fact that people got all googly over it because of the effects and all the money that was put into it. My two roommates are prime examples of people who go for that kind of stuff, so you can see where my bitterness originates.
That could be a good New Year's resolution for you. I refuse to see or read any Twilight...That craze is enough to make me threaten physical violence on certain people.

I think what allowed me to get over the visuals pretty quickly was the sheer length of the movie. After about 100-110 minutes, I was starting to get a "this is never going to ******* end" attitude and started to watch with an overly-critical eye.

      • It wasn't after a month that people started to rethink Avatar. For me it was the 2nd time I saw it, that very weekend it came out, that I realized that once the shiny new car in the dealership parking lot was really a lemon.

            No, tragically it won't.

Avatar will, b/c Cameron's reputation as a big box office director precedes him everywhere, just as it did with Titanic the biggest grossing film of them all. And BTW I refuse to watch it largely for that reason, too sappy too. Why? See the earlier posts & dialog about Danny Boyle & that big musical dog Slumdog Millionaire last yr.

Hopefully they let Avatar win best picture & stick it to Cameron on Best Director, Kathryn Bigelow should win it for Hurt Locker. If you saw it, or her earlier 1987 low budget vampire film Near Dark, you know she's a storytelling as well as cinematic genius & deserves it.

Failing Bigelow, give it to Torture Porn Tarantino.

            • Theres pretty much 0% chance that Bigelow doesnt win best director, so youre pretty covered there

To me, there are several locks this year. Waltz for Supp Actor, Mo'Nique for Supp Actress, Bridges for Actor, Bigelow for Director, Avatar for Visuals, Up in the Air for Adapted Screenplay, Up for Animated Feature, Up for Score, Crazy Heart for Song, and Hurt Locker for Best Pic.

Id honestly be shocked if any of those didnt happen.

              • I thought about starting an Oscars (Deserved & Undeserved) discussion thread but we might as well ride that horse til it drops right here.....

An Academy Award lock: Bridges for Actor
That the Oscar postponed that he should've won for Big Lebowski, the film that defined his career. He said in his RS interview that peole still came up to him on the street saying "Abide, Dude" 10 yrs later after that. Oscars are often a couple of yrs (or a decade) late. And he has the show biz pedigree, the late great Lloyd Bridges son. I have to say I've never seen a Jeff Bridges film I hated, he was good even in Starman -- if your a big Bridges fan chk. out The Fabulous Baker Bros, highly recommended. There's a great dialog in there between the brothers:

Jack Baker [Touches his brother's head] What's that on your head? What did you do to your bald spot?
Frank Baker: It's not a bald spot... but it's getting bigger, so I sprayed it.
Jack Baker [looks at black spot on his hand] That's not hair spray, that's black paint! You painted your head!

Hurt Locker nor Bigelow are locks.

                    • I think Hurt Locker is about 70/30 to win, and Bigelow is about 80/20, so while maybe no LOCKS, the point stands that id be very surprised if they didnt win

                          • Im with Commie, the Avatar hate is ridiculous. Its cool to go against the grain, man...Jesus, I've been called an elitist or film snob or something along those lines more then anyone on this board, and I was still able to look past the trivial plot and somewhat cliched writing to see not only how revolutionary those effects were, but the influence its had. Do you have any idea how many reboots or new movies and **** are being tooled as 3D because of Avatar's success? People are bitching now about the same things they always ***** about when a movie seems destined to win an award. Personally, I thought Avatar didn't hold a candle to something like (500) Days of Summer as a film, but I'll have no qualms with it winning Best Pic due to the influence its had on effects and the indisputable fact that it is now the highest grossing picture of all time, so clearly it has some appeal.
