From certain point of views it is a noble thought process, but most people would say leaving an amazing education (was it Harvard?) and possibly great future behind to be a wanderer is just idiotic.

Anyways, that's how I felt about the movie. While the story is interesting and emotional, I can't really enjoy it due to it's ending. Where as I may enjoy something like Bravheart (easiest example I can think of), due to him being a martyr for a cause, I did not enjoy Into The Wild because the whole reason for the deflating end is not worthy of it happening. If that makes sense.
Thoreau was not a ******* idiot about it. During the writing of Walden he lived in a cabin just outside of a town. McCandless was just a ******* idiot. I however enjoyed the movie a lot. I loved the scenes of him in Alaska. It is just such a beautiful place, and I really hope to visit one day.

If I remember correct, it's been awhile since I've read the book, didn't Chris make it out of their alive, only to find the river was blocking his way? He had decided to be done, but was completely blocked off. And wasn't it the mold on the seeds that eventually killed him rather than the actual seeds? If I am right here, like I said, it's been awhile, I don't see how that classifies as being a ******* idiot about it. He knew what he was doing, to an extent, he knew what he was getting into, and he handled it well.

      • Had to read the book last year for school and it wasn't bad. Only saw half of the movie though :( I need to finish/rewatch it.

        • Didn't he try to pick up knowledge as he went? You can't do that and expect to live in the wilderness.

Firstly, the fact that he did not realize that the river was only crossable for a very short amount of time was his ultimate downfall. If he had any knowledge he would realize that there is a strong chance the water level would not stay the same and would become much stronger and therefore uncrossable. He had not other way of getting out and leaving it to that river was just stupid. Regarding how he actually died, it is very inconclusive, but it had to either do with starvation or being so weak and malnourished he could not handle the toxins(if there were any) on the seeds. He had very little knowldege about surviving and the little knowledge he had was very poor. The fact that he tried to smoke a moose shows how stupid he was. If he had just taken a map it is very likely that he could have gotten out alive. He had no idea what he was doing, and I do not think he handled it well as seen by his regret once things got tough

In the book it says there was a bucket for testing something or another that he could have gone across on just a mile or two down river.

That's actually just a reference to one of his movies.

Definitely was not a good idea. He basically just read some books from what I know.

                          • I have to wite a paper on a Canadian movie so I am going through a bunch right now. It sucks because I hate Candian cinema with a passion. That said I just finished watching Hard Core Logo and it was ******* fantastic. The two leads in it (a relative unknown and Callum Keith Rennie AKA Leoban from Battlestar Galactica) are brilliant in every way. The film is great in every aspect and damn powerful. It was not hard to find online and I recomend it to everyone, especially those who enjoy the punk music scene.

Away from Her was pretty good. It is kind of depressing, but the acting is great in it.

Meh. Right now Hard Core Logo will probably be what I right my paper on as there is a huge amount about Canadian identity and how America plays a part in all that which my teachers will eat up. None of it is really on the surface either so I should get a good mark for reading more into the film. I am also thinking about doing The Fly, Last Night (another movie with Leoban that comes highly recomended) or The Sweet Hereafter. The problem with The Sweet Hereafter is it is a well known Canadian film so somebody will probably do their paper on it. My friend who is big into Canadian cinema sent a giant list of films that I need to watch so I will have my work cut out for me this week.
