  • today's league is completely better than the league MJ played in...the teams are better and it's harder to completely dominate as MJ did back in his prime...what Kobe is doing is great for the NBA (while some people would disagree...) he's bringing in people who never watch basketball just to see if he can score 50 points again...the NBA needs what Kobe is doing and Kobe knows this....best of all, his team is winning because of his killer instinct...what better way to have fun...

The only problem with today's game is that defense is something that you play when there's 2 minutes left and it's a close game; when MJ played defense was just as important as offense and today defense has taken a back seat

Talent wise, yes. Game play wise, no. Like Namy said, with all the ticky tack fouls that you get on offense, MJ could probably put up 40 a game.

Kobe hasn't done anything since Shaq left. You can argue all you want that Scottie Pippen was a top 50 basketball player, but Scottie needed MJ more than MJ needed Scottie. Case and point. When MJ left, Scottie said he could carry the team, which didn't happen. Then when MJ came back they dominated again. MJ in his prime is and always will be the greatest player of all-time, bar none IMO. LeBron may come close, but I don't see it.

But still, Scottie is WAY better than anything that Kobe has had after Shaq. Winning championships is based on the team game, so of course Kobe hasn't "done" anything. In the 80's when Jordan was a one man show and scoring a ton, with no Pippen...was he winning rings?

            • my favorite part of the article is when she says MJ played guys like Starks and Dumars whereas Kobe plays guys like LeBron, Dwade and Tmac...

it's hilarious because that pretty much proves michael played against better defenders which was true for pretty much everyone in the league that MJ played...defense all around was better than it is now without question...seriously when was the last time any of those guys were NBA All-Defense (DWade was 2nd team in 04-05 and thats it)

Well, they were one game away from the Eastern Conference finals (and would have made it had that BS foul not been called on him) in '94, so it's not like he didn't carry the team. Plus he was all first team NBA, won the All Star game MVP, and was top three in MVP voting.

And no, Kobe isn't better than MJ, but it is nice that we have an actual argument about this out there.

Oh no doubt you can have an argument about it, but MJ is a better player and there's no question about it. But I like a different perspective every once in a while.

Scottie was a fantastic complementary player, but he was never a franchise player. Reminds me a lot of what Luol Deng will be. Lu will be a fantastic player in a year or two, but he'll never be a Dwayne Wade type guy who can carry a team. That's not to a knock on the both of them, but it's just how their games compare to that of the superstars. Shaq on the other hand was a franchise player and quite possibly the most dominant C of all time next to Wilt The Stilt.

How many playoff series' has Kobe won since Shaq left? If memory serves me right he hasn't won any. Michael went to the Conference Finals in Scottie's first year, but Pippen was terrible in his rookie season, as was Horace Grant.

If MJ hadn't retired in 94 and 95, the Bulls IMO would have won 8 in a row. Well actually he came back at the end of 95 but was very rusty.

                      • Da Bulls would have won 8 in a row from 91-98, and then gone for 10 so that MJ could have one on each thumb before retiring...

                        • sweetness is right, the way the league is set up now is completey offensive minded. With the two hand in the back rule and the ticky tack hand fouls. Its amazing at some of the stuff they call now...I mean you can basically just back the defender all the way down to the hoop and the defender can not do anything with out getting a foul, so the nature of the game has changed since MJ where you could play tighter defense than todays game. So kobe has an advantage it todays league where it is perfectly set up for players like him. That espn article that lady wrote on the website is trash and the other espn writers were saying that as well.

                          • I think Kobe is the best in the NBA.. He's not better than Michael Jordan.. though it'd be interesting to see how he would've done in the Early-Mid 90's compared to Jordan.

That would play a bit of a more uptempo offense as well. You could always stick in Perkins at the 5/4, Jefferson next to him in the frontcourt, and then Durant at the 3 with Gomes off the bench.
well im just saying that durant is way too skinny to play PF even right now hes a little skinny for SF. he needs to some muscle on
