I figured as much going into the season. I still havent been able to watch it, I have it on my cpu, though. I'm currently going through the first four seasons again.
I certainly disagree with the proposition that the writers dont know how to finish off the seasons. While it would have been great to continue with season one's story. I thought the ending was rather powerful, with Micahel C. Hall's emotion. That final run in with you know who, is money.
Season 2's ending was sad as hell for obvious reasons. But everything works well story wise. Lila is a horrible character, though.
Season 3's ending was fine, from what I remember. Although the season kind of sucked. I've only seen it once, however...so it's not that fresh in my mind right now.
And Season 4's ending was absolutely fantastic.
Dexter may be tailing off now, perhaps. I still have to watch all of season 5 for myself. But up to this season, Dexter has easily been one of the best shows on television. And I think it warrants the amount of praise it has received for sure. As Cranston is to Walt White, Michael C. Hall is just perfect in his role/craft.
