Best Player to ever play in the State: Take your pick: Dan Marino, Joe Montana, Johnny Unitas, Joe Namath, Jim Kelly
Best Team to ever play in the State: Hmmm, I'd actually go Pitt '76, but PSU '86 has to be up there.
Best Coach to ever coach in the State: Joe Paterno (duh)
Any other random facts: Pennsylvania is a beast of HS football. All the guys listed above played HS football here, and the QB position is aplenty around the area, especially Western PA. Maybe Cali has beat them now, but if we go all-time, Pennsylvania is the best state for HS football recruits ever.
Hard to believe, Tennessee's had 2-3 generations of Flowerses & Colquitts that had to be Heismanworthy. Now they have or had a Clausen QB from that extended FB family. Back in the day only the press voted for the Heisman, most of the press & most of the Heisman winners were concentrated in the East Coast & Midwest, coincidence? IDTS.
And Texas, not Pennsylvania, is the beast of HS football, best in quality & quantity of blue chip recruits. Why else do you find Texans on ACC, Big East & Pac 10 squads? MWC, WAC & even the SEC too -- note that Matt Stafford from UGA & Bama's new QB McElroy both from the same Texas HS -- ? How many players from PA in those non-Big East, Big 11 aka Big 10, or ACC Conferences? not so much.
Granted, Texas is about 3 times bigger in size & population (of any other state not named California) & has a 5-tiered HS system to accommodate its several hundred thousand HS players, where HS football is an secular religion & an iconic institution......... see Friday Night Lights. With recruiting & technology at such a high level now the big BCS programs recruit pretty much the whole country, not too many exclusively regional or instate recruiting programs in the BCS now, none anymore in the top 10, that's cause & effect at work there.
