ESPN has it going as the best player to ever play IN the state. They don't necessarily have to be from the state, they could have gone to a school there, whether it is HS or College. Pro isn't counted.

Not really on topic, but kinda. Found it interesting.

        http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2...in-nfl-talent/

With that article in mind, it is really hard to tell best player. Some standouts include:

        Peyton Manning
        Terry Bradshaw
        Willie Roaf
        Y.A. Tittle
        Marshall Faulk
        Ed Reed
        Mel Blount
        Steve Van Buren
        Willie Brown
        Brian Mitchell

        Several others.

                  State: Alabama (the "Lizard State")
Best Player to ever play in the State: (tie) Derrick Thomas, LB; John Hannah, OG, both Alabama; honorable mention to Bo Jackson, RB, Auburn
Best Team to ever play in the State: 1991 Alabama Crimson Tide, '92 champion, last national title won
Best Coach to ever coach in the State: Paul William Bryant, the HC carried by players in my sig, won 6 national titles
Any other random facts: Strangely Alabama is the only major prestigious & wildly successful Div. 1 program to never have a Heisman winner. Bear Bryant hated it, said it de-emphasized the team concept, he was probably right. There is no doubt that politics came between SB III-winning QB Joe Willie Namath & the 1966 Heisman at Bama b/c Gov. George Wallace stood in the schoolhouse door in '64 as a token effort to stop integration, the voting press made Namath, Bryant & the Tide pay for Wallace's grandstanding.

                        Best Team: 1997 Michigan Wolverines
Random Fact: I've become addicted to sunflower seeds.
                        I'm a state.

                          State: Pennsylvania

Best Player to ever play in the State: Take your pick: Dan Marino, Joe Montana, Johnny Unitas, Joe Namath, Jim Kelly

Best Team to ever play in the State: Hmmm, I'd actually go Pitt '76, but PSU '86 has to be up there.

Best Coach to ever coach in the State: Joe Paterno (duh)

Any other random facts: Pennsylvania is a beast of HS football. All the guys listed above played HS football here, and the QB position is aplenty around the area, especially Western PA. Maybe Cali has beat them now, but if we go all-time, Pennsylvania is the best state for HS football recruits ever.

Louisiana has a ton of great athletes... Terry Bradshaw, Marshall Faulk, Bob Pettit, Shaq...

But I think the most popular and best player to ever come out of Louisiana is "Pistol" Pete Maravich.
