  • The Official Programming Thread

I searched but couldn't find anything about this. So I decided to create a thread for general programming discussion/advice.

I have a bit of a problem (a rather big one actually). I'm working on my masters degree in Economics and Finance which of course is great. The thing is, that to get a job in this business most places have started asking for competences in C++ or something equivalent. So I have decided to learn C++ programming. I only have limited experience with VBA which I'm also working on getting better at. My question is this: What litterature should I read and which sites around the internet are useful for this. I of course googled in and found a ton of sites, but not a lot that can help me since it's way to complicated for me to understand at this point. I have decided to start at the lowest possible starting point, ie. "C++ Programming for Dummies" and to work my way up from there. I would really like some input about what other books to get or sites to use. Thanks in advance!

GameDev.net is a great place to find programming advice and resources. They'll point you in the direction you need to go. I think there's still a free version of Visual Studio, which is the easiest compiler to work with for your situation. Really any book you pick up that's marked for beginners should work well for you. Let me know what you find because I've been needing to get back into C++ as well. I just went through some Java courses, and need to stay fresh in programming and expand my proficiencies in different languages.

Watch the C++ tutorials on YouTube by TheNewBoston. They're wonderful.

They look pretty good. I also found a site called http://www.cplusplus.com/doc/tutorial/ that's pretty good. I think those two combined should work for now. Thanks for your help. :)
