Best Head Coach in the NFC East
 

So who ya got?

This isn't really even worthy of debate. You can't really include Snyder in this discussion, as it's his first year. Reid has owned the NFC east for a decade, but hasn't won a SB. Whereas Coughlin has been up and down(on the hot seat before the SB win), but actually won a SB.

Wade's probably the best defensive mind at least...:o

How this answer isn't Shanahan is beyond me.

What makes him so great?

What makes any coach great? SB rings.

I'll take Tom Coughlin.

He had a ton of success in Jacksonville and got them to an AFC Championship and upset one of those Mike Shanahan led Bronco teams in one of the biggest playoff upsets in the last 15 years.

And he led the Giants to a Superbowl and they beat the undefeated Patriots.

Mike Shanahan is a good offensive coach and was a fantastic fit with Elway, but I'll take Coughlin.

and the difference between the top 2 and the bottom 2 is substantial.

You mean the ones he got more than a decade ago? Not really relevant any more... He won with Elway and a slew of great players in Denver in 1997 and 1998. Now his playcalling is bland, he is the most pass happy coach in the NFL, he is overconfident in his blocking system and he has a terrible eye for defensive talent. His superbowl rings are just nice memories now.

Went with Shanny...but I do personally believe Wade Phillps is tremendously underrated. And now that he's calling the defense, it just makes him even more valuable.

Outside of the most pass happy coach in the league thing, which I just don't want do the research for, I pretty much agree with you. I think NJX said before Shanny left Denver, his point was that Shanny is very good with the early scripted plays, but once he actually has to make calls he becomes bad and predictable.

He's not the clueless ****** I used to think he was, but he's certainly not "tremendously underrated". That's pushing it a bit.

Shanahan's the answer for two reasons. 1997 and 1998.

if you don't remember, about 3 years ago Coughlin was on the hot seat. But really he is a great coach that commands respect, is a hardass, and i have no idea how he was a widereceivers coach, at all. Snee is married to/bones his daughter so i can only begin to wonder how amazing the locker room jokes are. But anyway, if anything, he knows how to run a team with good chemistry. He had the balls to out Shockey and Plax, and even Amani when he requested a bigger contract.

Coughlin in my opinion. I am not really counting Shanny because he is a newbie into this division. I still remember it when it was Coughlin, Parcells, Gibbs, and Reid, and Coughlin was the least proven. Now two hall of fame coaches are gone, and it's Reid and Coughlin left from the batch. But I like Coughlin considering all the pressure and hate he got from fans and the media. Plus somehow we managed to make the playoffs with Hufangel and Lewis. I still have no clue how.. Then win a superbowl with Gilbride and Spags. But thank god we have Coughlin which is a change from that fool Fasshole!

I LOVE Wade Philips... as Defensive Coordinator not so much a coach.

He is great with the defense and is excellent defensive play caller. He really really knows his defense, however he just does not command much respect in the locker room. As a coach you have to be the unquestioned authority and your players should trust you and fight for you even more so than the owner. To be honest, Wade seems like a puppet coach to Jerry Jones while maintaining DC duties.

I'll go Coughlin, he's won most recently and Shanny hasn't had success in a while.

I dont really buy that he's a puppet. He does have authority...sure, he's a bit of a push over, a fun loving guy. But the player's respond well to him and absolutely love playing for him. Jones has given him a lot more flexbility with the defensive personnel, and our defense has really improved because of this. As you said, Wade knows defense...Jones gives him free reign over it. Wade has a fantastic eye for defensive talent. He actually has been a very successful head coach in this league, he just gets a lot more hate than he really deserves. Luckily, they finally let him call the defense, so now he's really throwing that weight around. :) And showing that he is pretty damn valuable to the team. I certainly believe he's a better coordinator as well, a brilliant defensive mind. However, I do think he's underrated as a Head Coach.
