Potential Preseason Top 25

This is an early look at my preseason top 25. It is based on returning talent, experience and potential impact players coming in. The (*) indicates a true freshman prospect.

And like everything, it is still a work in progress. Not all of the roster/depth charts are exact because I only included players I liked, highly ranked incoming freshman or players with experience and production.

This year will be very interesting. I don't really see any team that can go undefeated. Maybe a non-BCS school will finally sneak into the championship.

So, you think Darren Myles is going to be an impact player playing for the Vols this season? You may wanna swap him for Janzen Jackson. ;)

I thought he was kicked off the team.

According to their website, he is not on the spring depth chart.

UCF!!!! They host Boston College and travel to BYU. Get past those two games and they have a chance to go undefeated because they are the best team in CUSA but a large margin.

and the auburn roster you put on there is awful btw.

You have D. Myles listed at FS on your depth chart for Tennessee...

CashmoneyDrew 05-04-2011 12:46 AM

Darren Myles hasn't been on the team in over a year.

Janzen Jackson wasn't kicked off the team. He just took the semester off for 'personal issues' and he's expected back in the fall.

Yeah, and so is there chance at repeating that success this year. It is not as bare as one thinks, but how in the world will they replace that offensive line talent and staple they had forever. How will be replace Newton much less the heart and sole of the defense being Fairley and Bynes. Good luck to them, they should be ok but I think they could have major issues come next year.

AntoinCD 05-04-2011 07:59 AM

I really like the look of South Carolina going into next season. Should come through the SEC East pretty easily again

I can't see Texas not starting in the top 25 just based on name recognition alone.

How about based on the insane talent they always have. Granted last year was really, really bad, but Texas will always have the talent to field a Top 25 team.

They better get some consistent QB play because who knows if Garcia will be behind center.

Big Impact players/All American contenders/outsiders

With you doing this for a lot of teams im pretty impressed. really the only thing where you missed on was Tight End where ND has a spectacular starter in Tyler Eifert and sufficient depth with Welch and Ragone (and Jake Golic if you want to include him as well) for Koyack to just sit and learn the offense for a year. Other small misses is you flipflopped the positions of Cwynar and Hafis Williams.

Lastly I added Ishaq Williams as an impact frosh as a pure pass rusher and I added Josh Atkinson (but can be any frosh cb we signed) since lack of depth combined with both gray and blanton running out of years makes me feel like at least one of those kids will see significant time for them to prepare to start next year or play nickel

DE B. Hanna
SLB J. Kaddu
MLB D. Stuckey
WLB M. Clay
CB C. Harris, T. Mitchell (nickel)
CB A. Gildon
SS E. Pleasant
FS J. Boyett

Asper is expected to slide over to RT this year.

D. Thomas is coming in as a RB and wouldn't crack the rotation at CB this year anyway.

Pleasant is the SS while Boyett plays FS. Javes Lewis declared for the NFL draft and is no longer with the team.

Michael Clay plays the weakside at LB.

Kiko Alonso was going to be our leader at MLB, but he was arrested a few days ago and it looks likely his career with us may be over. So Dewitt Stuckey is the guy who would step in behind him.

Josh Kaddu will be the starter on the strong side and look for Lokombo to get plenty of PT behind him.

One spot to keep an eye on is WR. We have 4 really talented guys coming in the fall and it will be tough to redshirt all of them. I'm guessing at least one of them eventually earns substantial PT in front of Hoffman.

Also, it will be difficult to keep Colt Lyerla off the field. We have plenty of TE's, so I'm expecting Chip to kinda use him at that "tazer" position along with Barner. We announced Lyerla as a WR on signing day but he's been working with the TE's in the spring. After watching him in the spring game, it's obvious we'll be using him in some capacity.

CB - Greg Reid, Mike Harris (Nickleback)

SS - Lamarcus Joyner, Nick Moody
Maybe I am reading this wrong, does this indicate that Joyner is ahead of Nick Moody at strong safety? Is that a joke? Or that McCloud is ahead of McDaniel? And I thought Reed and Taiwan Easterling were seniors? They are back again? If so, great for Florida State.

How about based on the insane talent they always have. Granted last year was really, really bad, but Texas will always have the talent to field a Top 25 team.
That is true, Texas could be very good but last year they were a joke, and until they prove that they know their identity and actually become a rushing football team again and not this quarterback dependent running team they will struggle. Since it is still up in the air if they have actually switched their identity and believe in that change in philosophy, that is why I have them out of the top 25.

They better get some consistent QB play because who knows if Garcia will be behind center.
I agree with that, this team could even be higher but with Garcia there, if he plays poorly they will not be as good because of it. Shaw is ok but doubt he is the super star quarterback they are looking for. Garcia at least has big game experience, that is something Shaw does not have, thus ideally Garcia playing and not making mistakes is very key to the team success.

Cannot see Alabama at #1. When you break in a new QB, you are likely to lose 3 games, sure they are very talented around him but the QB still makes all the difference.

How will be replace Newton much less the heart and sole of the defense being Fairley and Bynes. Good luck to them, they should be ok but I think they could have major issues come next year.

i mean where auburn is, is pretty average and where i expected.. im expecting like 4-5 losses. but its just with some of the other teams are.. that make me scratch my head.

Nick Moody has fallen out of favor with the coaching staff (one look at his Twitter account would show why) and missed Spring ball. Lamarcus Joyner was a 5* for a reason and took over the position after moving there this Spring. Whereas Moody had a lot of highlight reel plays, he also messed up a lot and had the lowest grade of the DBs at season's end.

As for the DTs, I don't think it's fair to say anyone really starts over the other as they will see equal snaps. FSU's depth at DT this coming season and in 2012 is just disgusting.

Reed and Easterling were RS-Juniors in 2010. At this time it's unknown if Easterling will pursue baseball after the CBB season is over. He would be a loss, but ultimately would be replaced by a more talented, albeit less experienced player. As for Reed, I hope he can get his drops under control in 2011 he had way too many in 2010, especially the UNC game. Ultimately I expect Haulstead and Smith to be the stars in the receiving game.

I do not follow every off season thin with the Noles, but Nick Moody in my opinion was a huge part of that defense last year and is a physical presence and enforcer on the defense. He is a big kid, great speed, can run and hit. Joyner is a smaller corner, and corner is what he should be. Sure he would be better in coverage but he is not the force in the box or the physical intimidater Moody is. But yes if he is having off the field issues, but on the field the kid can play and he is a better player for that defense at the SS spot that Joyner in my opinion, without question.

Outside of Mosley, I have no faith or confidence in any of these players. That is not good considering it is your offensive and defensive lines, and a major identity with their football team. Sure some might become good players, but again, at this moment only player I would have faith in having a good solid year is Mosley, sure some could step up but it is a question mark at the moment.
