Mike Munchak
How would you guys grade his 1st year?

DoughBoy 01-02-2012 03:35 PM

Coming into the year I expected us to end up with another top 10 draft pick, especially with the lockout, a new QB and a entire new coaching staff. The only thing that keeps him from getting a better grade is the losses to the Colts and Jags.

Mainly for the Jags and Colts losses and some questionable clock management and challenges. Hopefully that gets better over time with more experience.

Probably a solid A-. I think it's safe to say had they not lost Kenny Britt they would have been a playoff team.

Positive: Had a good offseason. Great draft, and bringing in Hasselbeck turned out better than expected. Put together a great coaching staff around him. The team was competitive against everybody for the most part. Put together a good passing game, the first one this teams had in over 5 years. Beat teams he was supposed to beat outside of the division. Mostly, the team improved by 3 wins, and was a sancherception not happening away from the playoffs. On a lesser note, he gives a good interview and press conference.

Negative: There were a few games this year where the team looked like they weren't prepared (Jags loss, Houston, Indy), and it's annoying that the running game issues were never really solved. I don't know who gets the majority of the blame for that, but he certainly deserves some as the head coach. Two HOF offensive linemen coaching and the line played very below average.

Overall: B-, those losses were just so bad, and they hurt even worse when you realize that if they beat just one of those teams they would have been in the playoffs. But the team did slightly exceed expectations.

Definitely gets an A from me. If you look at it broadly and, say, assign an A+ to the team that wins the Super Bowl, assign A's to the deep playoff teams, A-'s for the one-and-done playoff teams, etc., then yeah, Munch would probably get a B or a B+. But I think you have to grade him through a curve.

He took over a team late in the offseason of a lockout (they fired Fisher LATE), and had to put a coaching staff together under those desperate circumstances. He hired a new offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator, and had to implement the new schemes on both sides of the ball in mere weeks due to the lockout. He single handedly got Matt Hasselbeck to sign here. He used his first round pick on a QB, and while it looks like he hit on the selection, his 1st RD'er was basically on the bench all season. His other draft picks made major impacts though. He had to deal with losing his best offensive player in Britt, and got no help from CJ and the OL to help compensate for the loss. Yet, he was able to improve the Titans' record from 6-10 to 9-7, and almost made the playoffs.

I think when you look at it with the knowledge that he's a first year HC, who doesn't even have coordinator experience, had to put in brand new offensive and defensive systems, and had to deal with a lockout over the offseason, then you have to come to the conclusion that it was extremely impressive to go 9-7 despite all the tumultuous circumstances. Yeah, the losses to the Jags, Colts, and getting blown out by the Texans were bad blemishes, but he also raped the Ravens, so he has that pinnacle win on his short resume. And if you ask most people, they'd say the Titans overachieved this year, which is a positive reflection on the coach. I thought we were an 8-8 team WITH Britt and a dominant CJ.

Of course, some credit should go to Reinfeldt, the rest of the coaching staff, and the players, but I absolutely love reading people talking about how they want their team to hire "the next Mike Munchak."

I'd go A-. The losses as mentioned hurt us, and letting the Bengals come back on us ultimately cost us the season. We had a good lead and CJ was playing pretty well and we didn't run him in the 2nd half. Being an O-Line guy I figured he'd have a better running game, we need to work on that

Having the chris johnson issue really hurt the titans.i think munchak did a great job this year and expect he'll improve a lot in 2012.it does'nt hurt that they are in the same division as the jags and colts who are gonna be crappy again next year either.

mightytitan9 01-28-2012 11:25 PM

For all the circumstances he did really well, a few in game calls and time management I didn't like. I think we'll improve as a team next year, hopefully that means in number of wins as well but it may not
