Lions Unlikely to select J.Jenkins

The Detroit Lions have a glaring need at cornerback, but with their first series of draft meetings in the books it appears unlikely they’ll gamble on troubled North Alabama cover man Janoris Jenkins in the first round according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

Jenkins is widely considered one of the most talented cornerbacks in the draft, a sentiment the Lions share, but a team source said chances are slim they take him 23rd overall considering his checkered past and the team’s own recent spat of marijuana-related arrests.

Jenkins was arrested three times during his first three college seasons at Florida, including twice for marijuana possession, and has four children reportedly by three different women.

It's all SMOKE this time of year. Tough to believe anything regarding teams draft strategies this close to the draft ...

This is pretty believable to me.

No way they take him after three players from last years draft have been cited for marijuana. Thats Jenkins M.O.

"Culbreath was arrested in January for possession of Marijuana, Leshoure was cited twice for Marijuana possession in less than a month and Fairley was pulled over and arrested for Marijuana possession last Tuesday."

I seriously doubt Jenkins even with all his talent, still gets picked in round 1. He's got Pac Man Jones written all over him. Besides, I think either Kirkpatrick or Gilmore will be available when our pick comes up.

Pacman is a total thug. Jenkins likes to smoke pot and have sex with his girlfriend.

I've always been one to lean towards ignoring character concerns to acquire talent but I just don't think the Lions can make this pick right now. At least from the information I have as an arm chair GM. If Mayhew has vetted out Jenkins and thinks he can stay on the field and not get suspended then go for it. I know the goal is to win football games but I would like to see the Lions have somewhat of a clean image. Mayhew has to tread carefully because having 3 players from last years draft class arrested is not a minor issue.

Combine that with Lewand's DUI from last season and they need to be really careful. With that said...if he's magically still anywhere near us in the 2nd then let's trade up a bit and pounce.

And I'm ruling out Dennard. Its on his thread, but he punched a cop with less than a week before the draft. I wouldn't even take a flier on him. Fights players, people at bars, cops, and has tight hips. He isn't worth a pick, but maybe a tryout at practice.

Yeah, I saw a mock on here with the Lions taking Dennard in the 2nd round. I had to bust that fool down.
