Who are the best blocking fullbacks in the NFL?

This is really a dying breed unfortunately. The old school bruising type of fullback that goes in as a lead blocker and has the ability to maul folks. Everyone is going with two tight end sets now. That being said, there has to be a few good players that still fit this mold. Vonta Leach is the obvious choice and maybe the best in the game today. I'm having a hard time thinking of others that emulate his style though. Le'Ron McClain? Lawrence Vickers?

Don't really know if he's considered one of the best but Chris Pressley can sure lay the wood on people when need be.

NotMyJob 08-01-2012 04:07 AM

Pressley is a beast. i was upset when he got snagged away from the Bengals PS, but he came back home.

yeah he was 19 doing this

Mufasa 08-01-2012 04:11 AM

Christ. That was 6 years ago too, wonder how much he's doing now.

is mcclain even that good of a blocker? he always seemed like a better runner to me.

i like owen schmidt, the man is bat **** crazy

Coming out of college McClain was supposed to be a great blocker and pure FB but truth be told he's in the lower echelon of the league as a blocker, Vonta Leach was a MASSIVE upgrade for the Ravens as a blocker.

Yep. McClain's best asset is his versatility, not only as a runner but also as a receiver out of the backfield. Cameron liked to motion him all over the place and he was effective blocking from the TE spot as well. As a blocker McClain is adequate, but I wouldn't call him one of the best in the league.

Is Mughelli still good? He always struck me as one of the top lead-blockers in the league.

I remember Jim Finn.

bigbluedefense 08-01-2012 03:46 PM

I remember Charles Way.

Forenci 08-01-2012 03:53 PM

Jim Finn was a legend though. I still remember his freakishly short t-rex arms and is inability to catch passes.

Good times.

bigbluedefense 08-01-2012 03:54 PM

Jim Finn was a Bergen Catholic douchebag!

Forenci 08-01-2012 03:57 PM

Ouch bro. Also, Madison Hedgecock was a legend as well.

bigbluedefense 08-01-2012 04:00 PM

You played for BC?

Love me some Hedgecock. But Charles Way was my hero. Dude played with cow knees.

Cow knees.

whatadai 08-01-2012 04:09 PM

I think Marcel Reece could do well in a ZBS.

Haha. No I certainly didn't play for BC.

Cow Knees are pretty awesome though.

I'd say that Leach is the best for sure, but the Texans even let him walk which speaks volumes about how blocking FBs are valued. There are only a handful of teams that want to run the ball physically enough to used a real FB. He also is a nice leader for Ray Rice in many ways. Leach was #45 on the players list.

I miss Lorenzo Neal also.

Ness 08-02-2012 06:14 AM

I would love to have Leach on the 49ers, although Bruce Miller has been decent for us as a blocker and receiver...but I just love the fact that Leach is a devastating force that will just bulldoze you over. Those guys are petty much gone from the NFL at that position.

VAfy-ya 08-02-2012 11:55 AM

I like Miller's potential though. He could in the conversation in a couple years. Hard not to like what did as a rookie.

XxXdragonXxX 08-02-2012 01:36 PM

Michael Robinson

QBs make the best fullbacks. Something about knowing what someone is thinking....

BaLLiN 08-02-2012 09:46 PM

I remember mike alstott

Ness 08-02-2012 10:38 PM

And I remember Fred Beasley blocking for Garrison Hearst. He was a great fullback.

Smooth Criminal 08-03-2012 07:25 AM

Whoever gets the start in a Bruce Arians offense.

O yea I forgot he doesn't need a fullback.

I've seen a handful of old games from the time Rathman played.

Remember Keith Byars? I don't know what made me think of him now but he was like Aaron Hernandez of yesteryear. Everyone talks about players today who would have been better off playing thirty years ago, I think Byars is one of the rare examples that he would have been better off playing 20 years in the future because offenses could use a player like him a lot more today then back in the 80's/90's.

He was kind of before my time I just remember him because he was on the Pats in the Packers super bowl year and he wore #41, the next year was third grade for me and 41 was my number and continued to be.

BBD he was on the Eagles for a while during the LT days I think I bet you remember him.
