Russell Wilson named Seattle Week 1 starter
Pete Carroll just announced it on The Seahawks twitter account.
"Russell Wilson will start against the Raiders and will start the first week of the regular season." "Russell has shown nothing but that he is a quarterback. He is so prepared, he does not seem like a first year quarterback." "This is an extraordinary kid. He just kept knocking us out with what he brought." "(His height) is not even a factor. What is a factor is that he is so elusive and shows great sense." "I've watched our team respond to him and they've taken to his leadership style." Petr Carroll |
I love Wilson, but be prepared for the the overreactions from both sides from this. He looks good but the Seahawks haven't found their franchise qb and savior yet. Let him play a couple weeks before anointing him the future and saying the Seahawks are big time contenders in the NFC/NFCW. On the other side, kid looks good and lets see what happens. He had a good preseason and could become a real player.

Flynn now the most expensive backup?

Sucks for Flynn. Not that he necessarily deserved to start, but he surely joined the Seahawks with the expectations to start, and will get pretty much no chance to prove himself thanks to a late round draft pick coming out of nowhere.

Flynn living the dream. 10 million dollars to sit the bench.
|
Is there any trade market for Flynn? His offensive coordinator didn't want him in Miami and now he is beat out by a 3rd round midget. Maybe Green Bay throws a 6th round pick out West to get him back?
|
"If I were Matt Flynn and Tarvaris Jackson, I'd be leery of this kid because, if you give him a chance...If you give this kid a legitimate chance to win the job...he'll win it."
-Jon Gruden |
3rd round (75th pick) isn't really late. Honestly Flynn should have stepped up if he wanted to be the starter. I wonder how much Flynn gets paid as a backup reaching no incentives?
Other than Wilson's height what are the knocks on him? The guy produced in college. |
Lets go Wilson, Drew Brees 2.0

But with that said, if Seattle sets up this offense properly, Wilson can be a solid player. |
Repent, for the false prophet Tebow has been replaced by the true Savior - First Book of Russell Wilson

Didn't Pete Carroll make the call to bring in Matt Flynn to be his starter??
I still think Flynn plays before the season is over. Preseason ain't real games. |
That's cool, Wilson's a guy that's easy to root for. I hope he does well.
But yeah, that sucks for Flynn. Quote:

I don't think a midseason trade is really a possibility either, it'd probably have to wait until the offseason. As far as potential partners go, he'd have to go somewhere to be the starter or at least compete to start/be a backup plan if the starter fails. After his signing bonus is taken out he makes $4.5 million a year, which is too much to be paying a backup. However, that is a great deal for a starter. The teams that were thinking about him this year could still want him, and there should be even more interested at this reduced contract. Teams like the Jets, Jaguars, Chiefs, Cardinals, and maybe a few others like the Browns, Vikings, Buccaneers, and Rams if their current QB fails this year, could be interested in Flynn in the offseason and should be willing to part with at least a 4th to give him a chance with that contract. |
If Pryor doesn't develop into a QB (odds are very much in favor of no), I could really see Flynn replacing Palmer soon.
|
Wilson is likely to tear it up Week 4 preseason matchup against the Raiders 2nd and 3rd stringers. Raiders aren't going to play any starters more than a series. The only player who may start on D against SD to play significant minutes against Seattle would be Miles Burris as he's a rookie and taking Curry's spot at WLB.
Seattle's 1st teamers vs. Raiders scrubs? It will boost Wilson's stock greatly. |

Nope, Carroll said from the beginning Flynn was brought in to compete to be the starter. Everyone assumed it was his job to lose, and Wilson came in and took it. |
Word on the street is Flynn took the news of Wilson starting like a little *****.

Carroll is going to rotate these QBs until one of them clearly demonstrates the team has a better chance to win with him under center. |
