Updated Small School Top 100 - Jan 24

The best of the best from non FBS schools. Lots of movement at the top. I doubt much more changes in my top 5 unless something really good or bad happens in workouts.

How does Aaron Mellette compare to last years top small school receiver Brian Quick?

princefielder28 01-25-2013 07:47 AM

I expected Ty Powell to be a little higher on the list

I'd be interested in your thoughts on this also Josh.

At this time last year I thought Mellette was miles better than Quick (who I didn't like at all - had a friend who went to the Rams practice in London and said he didn't look great there either) - but the first half of the year wasn't great for Mellette, not sure if the non performance against North Carolina knocked his confidence? Better the second half of the year, but from what I saw on NFL Network he struggled to separate in Mobile - a little better as the week moved forward. I had him top 50 overall pre-season - now I don't think he's going to make my top 100 unless he does something special at the Combine and even then I'd be wary.

B.W. Webb is my new top small school guy. Him and Alford came into the week 1-2 for me, but Webb took the top spot. Both belong in the 2nd round.

This is a talented group of small schoolers. I need to watch more of Garrett Gilkey, but he impressed me this week. Tenacious guy. I talked to his family as well which is down in Mobile with him. They are all having a great time with it.

I went back and watched tape on Montori Hughes and Brandon Williams because this week intrigued me more about them. First play I watched of Williams, he was on the ground against a D2 school. Hughes against Northern Illinois, flashed every now and then, but early in the game specifically, he was getting pushed around a lot. The weird thing about Williams is that many are saying he should be a Nose Tackle or 0-tech, but I don't recall seeing him ever play the position on tape. Was rarely even a 1-tech, primarily a 3-tech. I wasn't even overly impressed with them this week like many were. I think they are being overrated right now.

I still think Ben Ericksen and Lamar Mady are very underrated. Ericksen was a stud free safety with superb ball skills and I've watched a ton of tape on Mady over the past two years and have been impressed each time.

Ben Ericksen INT from earlier this year.

Rob McCabe completely off the list now. Was his performance at the East-West shrine game that bad?

My senior year we had 2 QBs. One started the first half of the season and the other finished it winning a section championship. Ty Powell started that season as our QB and Mason Foster finished it. Both turn out to be NFL level linebackers. Pretty awesome

I think J.J. Wilcox S, may prove out to be the top ranked small college player. Mayock is rarely off on Safeties and he loved Wilcox at the Senior Bowl practices.

I'm a big JJ Wilcox fan (Georgia Southern alum), and it was encouraging to hear that Mayock came away from the Senior Bowl with some positive impressions of him. But I honestly don't know how much to make of Mayock's evaluation at this point, because he made it very obvious that he hadn't spent any time scouting JJ other than at the Senior Bowl. Mayock referred to him a couple times as a converted cornerback. JJ has never played corner at the collegiate level. He played wide receiver as a freshman and was a flexbone slot back during his sophomore and junior seasons.

I noticed that as well. Thought Mayock was better prepared than last year when he was way behind, but still some gaps. Unless NFLN lets him do this full time, that's always going to be the case.

Sorry if you've covered this before but I see Padron is ranked low everywhere, including on your board. Any insight onto his decision to declare and if you think he'll be able to rise into draftable ranges?
