No QB Selected in 1st Round - 1st Time in 17 Years

I cannot remember ever seeing a draft crop (I'm 33 years-old) this weak at QB. I am predicting zero QB's being selected in the 1st round, 1st time in 17 years! Call me crazy but all these QB's look like crap! There's a good chance 2 or 3 QB's will be reached for but I don't think it's guaranteed, in fact I don't think it's going to happen at all....mark it down folks, 0 QB's drafted in 1st round...

If you disagree, what year can you remember that had a worst QB class?

Regardless of how strong the QB class is, there will be a QB taken in the first. This will almost always be relevant.

Shupp 01-28-2013 12:58 AM

It wasn't 17 years ago, so "always" is obviously not accurate...there are 32 QB's in the league better than any coming out this year, I'm sure of it...

RCAChainGang 01-28-2013 01:14 AM

I qualified always with almost. And I'm not sure I agree with that statement and regardless of wether it is true some GMs are going to go nuts and draft a QB. I wouldn't be surprised to see a run on QBs.

Monomach 01-28-2013 01:14 AM

This is silly. There will be at least two...and probably three...QBs going in the first. I predict a QB goes first overall and two in the top five.

It's not a strong QB class, but that doesn't have anything to do with whether QBs go in the first.

1. Kansas City
2. Jacksonville
3. Oakland
4. Philadelphia
6. Cleveland
7. Arizona
8. Buffalo
9. New York Jets

One of those teams will take a QB with their 1st Pick. Can't win in this league without a decent starting QB and with all those teams having ?'s at QB one will take a chance of on Geno Smith, Matt Barkley, Tyler Wilson or Mike Glennon maybe even Ryan Nassib

2007, and that had two guys go in the 1st round.

Halsey 01-28-2013 08:02 AM

It's not like Joe Flacco and Colin Kaepernick were considered sure fire QB prospects. There's bound to be a least a couple of guys from the 2013 crop that become quality starters.

Splat 01-28-2013 08:04 AM

What is this I don't even... I would bet my life on a QB going in the first round. Even if the Chiefs made the mistake of not taking a QB, someone is going to.

It is a completely different era in college football. Not too long ago, almost every top college ran the ball and threw the ball only occasionally, judging QB's was a very tough project because few of them had ever thrown a ball for a whole lot in college.
Today, throwing the ball is a top priority for most college programs and QB's are years ahead in their ability to pass the ball and read defenses. In the past, college QB's usually took 3 seasons to come up to a point where they were truly productive, today college QB's are productive right out of the gate and quite capable of taking their teams to the playoffs in their rookie season.
The point is that GM's and scouts have a pretty clear idea of what a QB's potential is because they are looking at far more finished examples on draft day, add in the current importance of the position, I doubt we will ever see another draft where no QB is taken in round 1. Remember, 17 years ago, only seniors were eligible for the draft.

I seriously doubt it happens but I don't really find any obviously great QBs in this draft. I know the last 2 drafts have us very spoiled, but this is a weaker year in my mind. I think at least 3 QBs go in the 1st just because of positional value. A year without a franchise QB or developing a franchise QB is a wasted year for a team. I don't think I rate any of this years crop in the top 8 of the last 2 years. Geno isn't even a consensus top QB. I bet GMs board are radically different across the league, more so than usual.

PossibleCabbage 01-28-2013 03:50 PM

Bad teams often needs QBs as "poor QB play is" a large part of why they're bad. Bad teams also often are bad because they don't draft especially well, making mistakes like "reaching" on a player because it's a "need."

So I don't think there's any chance there will be no QBs going in the first round. There may be QBs taken way, way, way higher than they should have, but if you like a guy much better than all the other QBs and you don't have another pick for ~30 picks, I don't know if you can pass up on that QB even if he's not "best player available."

Value does trump quality in terms of optimal drafting strategies, after all.

CrossOfDeath 01-28-2013 04:02 PM

There is not a QB in the draft that deserves to be in the 1st round, but I am going to say at least 3 of them do go 1st round.

I was going to say the same thing. 3, possible 4 will be taken. 0 deserve to be taken (at least for now).

bucfan12 01-28-2013 04:23 PM

Geno Smith and Matt Barkely will be first rd picks. Them not playing in the sr bowl only helped their stock.

FUNBUNCHER 01-28-2013 04:23 PM

How do you determine not one of these QB prospects is worthy of a first round grade??

There are 32 picks in the first round. The upside potential of Smith/Barkley/Glennon/Wilson IMO give them at least a late first round grade.

The first round isn't just the top 10.

holt_bruce81 01-28-2013 04:28 PM

I actually like this Quarterback class. A lot more than I liked the 2011 class and we saw three of those guys go in the top 12.

Quarterbacks are always going to get pushed up the board. I think we see two go top 10.

nepg 01-28-2013 04:30 PM

Geno's going in the Top 10. Should go #1. He's really not lacking anywhere.

regoob2 01-28-2013 04:33 PM

A team will at least trade back into round 1 for a QB. That's as high as I think any one of them should go as well.

vidae 01-28-2013 05:09 PM

With the way the college and pro game has changed I doubt we'll ever see another first round without at least one QB. It's just the nature of the game now.

Except that any time a team can get even a hint of pressure on the guy he fold like and origami goose.

It's theoretically conceivable that someday you will have 32 teams who are all comfortable with their quarterback situation in the short term.

But that's pretty much the only way that's going to happen.

But even then we'll see a situation like the Packers and Rodgers, no? Some very skilled QB starts to slip and a team with a solid but aging starter will pluck them up. Sometimes the value is just too good to keep passing.
