Le'Veon Bell: Huh?

Not surprising to me.

Me neither. see sig...

Thought he was far and away the best non-Lattimore back this year. I don't even watch an insane amount of college football, I don't understand why teams are just catching on.

Abaddon 03-03-2013 07:26 AM

RB is a low priority position. If a kid doesn't do something really flashy, he's not going to get the pub he deserves.

princefielder28 03-03-2013 08:51 AM

Bell is a good prospect, but the running back position is so much about preference and identifying a skill set fitting your offense's specific needs. For the Packers they don't necessarily need that bell cow type, but rather a guy who's good in pass protection and can maximize his 15 or so carries with home run potential. A player like Johnathan Franklin fits the Packers better than a player like Bell.

FUNBUNCHER 03-03-2013 10:24 AM

Bell definitely didn't play at 230# last season for Michigan State. IMO he was close to 250# and because of that I thought he would run slow and not be considered a top flight RB prospect.

Showing up at the lighter weight and running a good 40 IMO changes people's perspective on him, even though Bell still doesn't have much buzz around his draft status.

Hurdling multiple defenders isn't flashy?

Miaoww 03-03-2013 11:16 AM

I think he's good. Prefer Bell though.

LonghornsLegend 03-03-2013 06:46 PM

What are even the knocks on him? He's always appeared to be a stud to me and his skills translate unlike Ball IMO. I hope he goes to a contender who needs a back because he'll be an instant producer.

I guess you can use the amount of carries (miles) he tallied in his college career. That turns some teams off.

CowboysBeastMode 03-03-2013 07:01 PM

he got alot a tread on the tires and he doesn't much a burst to me. that doesn't matter in the slow big ten but in the nfl it will matter, plus he runs too much like he's 205 lbs for my taste

Not very agile, little big indecisive finding a hole.

tjsunstein 03-03-2013 07:21 PM

North/South runner but can't make a living going lateral in the pros.

That's one of my negatives on him as well. Gets too cute sometimes

Turner ran hard as hell and then ran away from people with those tree trunk thighs......until his legs died about 2 years ago.

Exactly, the 2 years ago makes me sad. His early years in ATL were awesome.

FUNBUNCHER 03-04-2013 09:24 AM

Michael Turner got fat because he got lazy. Guarantee that dude barely worked out in the offseason thinking he was good enough to show up and ball out when the season started.

RBs who don't commit to the offseason workout program hit the wall at 28 and never really produce at a high level again.

The Falcons at this point are better off without him.

At least Bell got into peak shape for the combine, but I think his weight is going to creep up to the 245# range he played at for the SPartans.

LonghornsLegend 03-04-2013 09:42 AM

Only thing I see is maybe slow to get up to top speed, not sure where I am getting people saying he is not agile though. He's hurdled numerous people at probably over 240lbs and his spin move is sick. It would be different if he just ran and plowed into everyone with no moves at all.

I also tend to think that his speed was pretty impressive at that size, I don't think he's ever going to be a guy breaking off 60 yard runs consistently but he seems plenty fast enough to succeed. I would hope he gets his weight around 230 and no higher, not 245 range.

Iamcanadian 03-04-2013 11:55 AM

Good prospect but where is the toughness, I watched pretty well all his games and he doesn't use his 240lbs the way you would expect. He doesn't punish defenders but takes the easy route. I really don't think he can get away with it at the next level.

He is much more like the 250 lb scat back known as Brandon Jacobs.

I agree. Bell is good, but he is getting a little too much hype. He isn't nearly as physical a runner as Eddie Lacy and isn't as quick to the hole, to compare him to the other top power back in the draft. I must say, maybe I need to watch more Michigan State, but I don't really see the receiving skills people are mentioning. To me, Bell looks like a big guy who is light on his feet, but isn't really explosive or consistently physical. A lot like Jacobs in his running style.

I would say the exact same thing about Lacy. I'm not sure when I ever saw Lacy look really explosive or consistently physical either. Explosive was never a word I used to describe him and more so then punish the defender he was usually making him miss.

Not to say they are in the same range as prospects, but that's the definition I'd probably use for Lacy also so I don't know why that would be a negative here.

Explosive is one thing, but i do think you can point out a pretty good consistency of Lacy running physical.
