Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri

From all I have watched of this guy, he has as good a chance as anyone on D besides Milliner, to become a quick Pro-Bowl guy.

Why is he not a lock by pick #10?
What am I missing here?

Who doesn't want him?

phlysac 04-17-2013 08:33 PM

Age, off-field issues, late to excel.

I still like him.

holt_bruce81 04-17-2013 08:38 PM

Age? off field issues? what? I think he's a top 5 player in this draft.

farfromforgotten 04-17-2013 08:40 PM

I don't get why he is trending down in recent mocks. Definite top 10 pick, IMO.

The only thing I can think of is, he isn't really the sharpest tool in the shed.

Basically this. He was a 5 star recruit out of HS, but had to go the JUCO route to because of academic issues. Was also suspended for the final game of the 2012 season for "breaking team rules".
Fwiw I love him as well. Number 13 in my overall ranking.

holt_bruce81 04-17-2013 08:56 PM

I think he can go as high as #4 to Philly.

The world would end...if we traded back and took him that would be one thing...but at 4? No way that would end pretty.

He's best suited at UT in a 4-3. I can see him slipping to Carolina or Dallas's

Inconsistent against the run is my only knock but that's not going to hurt him much.

But my god does he move as well as any man I've ever seen that size.

There's a play on one of his cutups that he drops into a hook-to-curl zone from his DT spot and looks like a LB. He moves scary.

Yes, 24 isn't as young as one might like. He has been labeled as someone who didn't try in the classroom and sometimes in the filmroom. To me that is an off-field issue. He has been suspended in the past. It took him 3 years to get into D-1 after being a top-5 player in the country.

I love his game. I'd draft him. I'm just giving some red-flags. Injury history, as well.

villagewarrior 04-18-2013 04:10 AM

Personally I think he's made for the Raiders.

LonghornsLegend 04-18-2013 07:30 AM

I really want 1 of the top Guards for Dallas, and the need at Safety bumps Vaccaro and probably Cyprien up next but I certainly wouldn't be upset if he's there at 18 and we took him. The fit made more sense had we just cut Ratliff after his dwi, but I've seen him mocked to us quite a bit so it wouldn't bother me one bit. He's a stud.

AntoinCD 04-18-2013 07:49 AM

I got grief for this in my rankings but I don't really care. Richardson is my top rated prospect. He moves like a LB, can penetrate and has a tremendous motor.

Playing against the best offensive line in college Richardson led the team in tackles. He makes plays behind the line, can get after the QB, makes plays while being blocked and makes plays in pursuit.

I get the intelligence thing, but really if he is asked to play the 3 he will be great. The main knock I have on him is he is a little lighter than you would prefer

I like Lotulelei more than either Floyd or Richardson, really. I think he's the real mystery regarding why he's dropped so far, he was more or less a consensus top three guy until that health concern came up, and as it turns out that was a false flag. And yet I see him dropping out of the top ten all over the place.

I think its possible that the 5-6-7 best DTs will all be selected a bit later than their talent would suggest they should be. I know the phrase get tossed around quite a bit, but this DT class really is "crazy deep" imo. From my own rankings I could easily see up to 15 guys becoming quality starters at some point, so I could see some teams wait a round to pick a DT, and instead picking a player with a similar grade from a position where there is less quality in the later rounds. If the Jags, Raiders and Eagles all pass on Floyd and/or Lotulelei, there really isnt a team from pick 5 to 9 that needs a DT, and that could start a ripple effect that may cause guys like Sheldon Richardson and Sylvester Williams to drop a bit.

I came into the draft process know absolutely zero about this guy.

But after I did my tape evaluation I was excited as anyone about this guy. IMO his projects to the NFL seamlessly. His tenaciousness, explosiveness, strenghth, and versatility will immediately help any NFL team. I dont know much about his intangibles but I love that guy and would love if the Saints pick him.

AcheTen (Thumper) 04-18-2013 01:28 PM

I have it in close confidence that the Eagles are strongly considering picking him at the #4 spot.

What would give you that inside scoop?

keylime_5 04-18-2013 04:46 PM

He is the least talked about great prospect in this draft. Floyd and Lotuleilei I think being ahead of him and the lack of teams who really need DTs in the top 10 picks this year is why he isn't getting top 10 hype. He would be a great value in the teens though and had a great season last year.
