And the winner of Super Bowl XLVIII is...

The San Diego Chargers.

Bet your life savings on this. There's a recent trend that is freakishly consistent lately:

In the past four years, the team to play against the Philadelphia Eagles in the Eagles' home opener has won the Super Bowl.

2009: New Orleans Saints @ Philadelphia Eagles, Week 2
2010: Green Bay Packers @ Philadelphia Eagles, Week 1
2011: New York Giants @ Philadelphia Eagles, Week 3
2012: Baltimore Ravens @ Philadelphia Eagles, Week 2

And in 2008 the Steelers played the Eagles in the Eagles' *second* home game.

So the schedule release today told us that in 2013, the first team to play the Eagles in their home opener will be...

The San Diego Chargers.

Going to Vegas now...

Holy crap, that's kinda freaky. And awesome.

Ness 04-18-2013 11:00 PM

What about the last five years? Or the last seven?

phlysac 04-18-2013 11:03 PM

If the Chargers draft Ziggy Ansah, should I withdraw my bet?

Norv Turner commits sudoku the next day.

I see what you did there.

Or maybe its an Andy Reid thing and it'll be the Cowboys since they play the Chiefs in the Chiefs home opener. BETTER DOUBLE DOWN JUST IN CASE!!

FUNBUNCHER 04-19-2013 07:04 AM

I'm confident that trend ends this season. Next.

The SB winner will be one of the teams that made the playoffs last season.
The 49ers are safe money.

I don't trust a Peyton Manning led team to win another SB. The Ravens are in transition. I think the Pats are game, but their offensive weapons are either dinged or unknown.

NFC is just too strong right now.

ATL/SF/SEA/GB. Take your pick.

I like the way you think.

The funny thing is that while everyone is just writing the Chargers off because "ZOMG PHillip Rivers suxors now", people forget that just 2 years ago Phillip Rivers was one of the top-5 QBs in the NFL coming off consecutive elite years.

I could easily see the Chargers having a huge bounce-back year with Phillip Rivers putting up MVP numbers and a young defense with some playmakers coming into their own (Melvin Ingram, Kendall Reyes, Corey Liuget).

Chargers winning the Super Bowl is actually pretty realistic in my mind.

You can't make selective observations if you include those years.

I've been barking up that tree for the past two years.

I predicted a Falcons-Chargers SB before the season. I said that there is an incorrect perception that the Chargers aren't talented anymore.

That perception was correct. I was incorrect.

They have a poor OL and lost so many good weapons:

- Sproles to NO
- VJax to TB
- Gates to father time/injuries (he's slow, let's be honest)
- Mathews to injuries/failed hype/OL didn't help (on second thought he's not even good)

And they just don't have any impact players on D. Phillips and Weddle are good players, but other than that there's just not enough playmakers. Neither English or Ingram have big-time pass rush capability. They haven't been able to hit on a big-time player in the first round in years. Their CBs are just so average.

And Norval just wasn't getting it done. It was time for a change.

I think they can bounce back, but they just don't have much talent. They need a big-time draft.

And I worry about their draft too. They are going to have to use a high pick (or two) on OL, so the defense probably won't get a huge boost. AND they will likely draft a RB - another pick that won't be used on D.

I like Rivers, and I think with a full season of DX, a better o-line, and a new life without Norval, he'll have a bounce-back. But even he regressed pretty bad the past two years - very concerning even with surrounding issues.

I like their coach and QB - so that's a start. I'll probably pick them to be good again in a pretty weak AFC and they'll probably disappoint me again.

Be right back guys, I'm going to put my life savings on the Chargers winning the Super Bowl because of some ridiculously coincidental stat and because a random guy on a message board told me to.

I know its a sure fire bet:lynched:

With the Broncos having another year to learn the same Offensive system, the same Defensive system and Manning having another offseason to rehab after coming off his 2nd best season in his carer and adding Wes Welker and throwing in the fact that they have the "easiest" schedule... I dont see any logic of the Chargers standing a chance, and the Broncos have to be considered favorites in most of their games as well as preseason super bowl favorites barring any significant injury.

Splat 04-19-2013 03:40 PM

The Broncos will win the regular season.

I see what you did there.... And I can agree with that, but hope for more

I guess there's still time to put a bet on this at your local casino.

Do it while you still can!

Nice streak, but it ends this year.

This thread seemed a little bit more crazy when it was posted.
