Does Brunell Deserve to Get Benched?

He is old, he is not playing well. I believe that they should give 1st rounder Jason Campbell a shot soon

No. He should keep playing until they are blatantly out of it.

Which could be a lot sooner than later if the Skins and Brunell keep on playing like this. But I agree, they have to keep Brunell in there for a bit longer. Putting in Campbell would basically be admitting they are giving up on the season.

No one, including Mark Brunell, believes that he himself can carry that team. With the lack of a running game, the shoddy pass protection, and the play-calling, Brunell wasn't in a position to be effective. I think Saunders' play-calling doesn't have enough vertical elements to keep D's honest right now. Why commit a safety into 2-deep coverage, when the Skins aren't throwing over the top? Why not blitz and pressure? I think they need to open their playbook up and throw the deep ball a few times just to loosen things up. Brunell hasn't lost much in his arm. I think he's not as fast as he was 2 years ago, but that doesn't mean his line shouldn't protect better.

Let's wait until Portis is back before we really judge. If they lose to Houston, Brunell might be sunk.

It won't matter it takes a good year or two for a QB to get Al Saunders O down.

I don't believe that Brunell will ever be a good qb in Saunders system. The entire offense is based around the big play and being aggressive, something Brunell isn't capable of doing. He has poor arm strength, has poor accuracy on deep balls, most importantly, he is afraid to throw deep. He also makes poor use of the middle of the field. The offense is going to struggle so long as Brunell checks down to rbs 70% of the time. This isn't the WCO, you can't check down every play and except to be a productive qb in this offense.

I'm pretty sure that Campbell will see some playing time at some point this year, but for now I think they should stick with Brunell.

According to KC Joyner, the Football Scientist, Brunell had some of the best deep ball numbers in 2005-2006 in terms of effectiveness and not forcing the ball into bad spots. His arm may not be the strongest in the NFL, but he and Moss connected for 10 plays of 40 yards or more last season. That's pretty good for a guy with no arm and no reading ability.

Brunell checking down says he's not comfortable with Saunders' offense AND Saunders isn't putting the players in the right positions to succeed. I don't see aggressive play-calling. I see Saunders being too conservative and not pushing downfield.

Its too early to tell just yet. Let's see how he does with Portis back in the lineup. I think Al Saunders is to blame for alot of their woes as well, his scheme does not fit the personnell. (Remember BBD's NFL Truth #2?) But you have to give him at least till week 5 to see how the Skins do. Putting in Campbell is pretty much throwing in the towel on the season. At the end of the day, its still only 0-2, theres a lot more games to go. Anything can happen. Remember last year the Skins were all but done, only to catch a hot streak in the end and make the playoffs over Dallas. So being 0-2 is hardly the end of the world.

If they go 1-4 with no indication of a comeback however, then I say get your future QB some snaps, because its only fair, and at that point, it would be obvious that Brunell is only hurting the team, and putting in Campbell wouldn't make things any worse, only better if possible.

Hell yes, they need to put in cambell/ It's been 2 years. it's time. This is almost the same position Chris Simms and the Bucs are in. The Bucs need to Keep in Simms, to judge if he can be the QB of the future, for the skins they need to put in cambell to see if he is their QB of the future, cuz Brunell is on his last legs

It has really only been 1 year so far. This is his second year now. He will get in at some point this season.

Exactly. In over two years in Washington, Brunell has played well for one half of a season, I think its time to move on and see what they have in Campbell.
