BeerBaron if you could sticky this that would be great. I've heard a lot of people asking questions about the salary cap and such so I thought I'd put this together.
I'll have comments to follow once I'm done editing.

The cap charge for cutting each player, incidently, can usually be figured out by taking the remaining base salary, dividing the signing bonus by the number of years on the contract when signed, and adding what the remaining amount is into a one year lump sum (hence the 2.5 million charge for Rashied Davis).
Say, for example, we decide to cut Devin Hester, who has 20 million left in unallocated bonus money. That would not count against our cap, nor would he ever receive that money. Jerry Angelo and Cliff Stein have done a pretty good job keeping this team cap flexible down the road.
Also, whoever signed Greg Olsen's contract is a ******* idiot. I'm guessing he's making most of that incentive bonus money (if he's not he should). The base salary for Forte is pretty laughable too. Rookies are so damn cheap.

you usually put aside about 5 million for the rookie pool, I think.
EDIT: Sorry for consecutive posts, I just had several different thoughts for the same thread at different times.

The thread has been stickied.
And yeah, our cap situation isn't all that bad. I'd like to lock up Orton long term though. He may not be an elite, franchise QB but he's probably been the most consistently good one we've had in my lifetime.
Plus, I recall hearing an announcer say in one game that given the conditions we play in for 8 home games and in the 1 in GB, and iirc Minny is going to build an outdoor stadium too in the coming years, it might be wise to lock up a pretty good QB and spend the rest of the money on the defense and running game since they'll go in any weather.

for the ST, you are using the year the season begins in, not when it ends, right?

Hey 51, for all the contract info, just go to rotoworld.com, search the player you are looking for, go to that player's page, and they have the contract info there, and they break it down nicely as well. So for instance a player's BS you are missing, Israel Idonije: http://www.rotoworld.com/Content/pla...rt=Nfl&id=2971

Now, when you cut a player, you only have to pay what's remaining of the signing bonus and the base salary and roster bonuses/etc go unpaid, correct?

Correct. Just the base salary for that year though. There really are no players we would save money on by cutting this year, perhaps a bit on guys like Rashied Davis or Dvoracek. After looking over the #'s I would expect us to let Tait play out his contract and Vasher to stay for one more year. The only scenario where I could see otherwise is if the club feel like they simply aren't worth their base salaries anymore. It could happen with Vasher if he doesn't fully recover.
To answer your original question, yes, it's the year in which they sign the contract.
I took some of the contract info from rotoworld, but there's some stuff they don't have too. Must have missed on Idonije.
I would guess that the rookie cap is probably going to be about 5-6 million. Add another 2-3 million for in-season cuts and what not. As I recall, the practice squad does not count against the salary cap.
I would expect the salary cap to probably go up to about 123-126 million, but the economy could dip into it a bit.

51, I think you are wrong about the salary cap charge. All you have to pay are any signing bonuses. When you cut a player, you don't owe them any of their base salary, just all the remaining bonuses.
John Tait for instance is on the last year of his contract and has roughly only 2.3 million in bonuses unpaid. He is set to make 4.8 million in base salary, but if we cut him, we'd only have to pay the remaining 2.3 million in bonuses, saving us about 2.5 million in salary. I have no idea where you got 7.5 million.
I might be wrong on this though, as I am no expert.
Also, I'm pretty sure it's just signing bonus you have to pay, and any additional bonuses like workout or roster don't count.

That's what I said when you asked me the first time.
I'm not sure where I got that number, it probably is wrong.

So Ogunleye, Idonije, and Anderson are all signed through '09? Hmm, interesting. Adds to the train of thought of drafting a 1st round DE, to contribute in the pass rush as a rookie but then start come 2009.

That sounds right to me. If you're cutting a guy with more than one year remaining, the cap charge this season is the bonus money owed this year, and then next year the cap charge is all of the bonus money remaining for the additional years combined.

This is true, unless you've tinkered with the bonuses (to make cap space earlier in the life of the contract) such that you essentially converted a RB into a SB, making it guaranteed but prorating it so you pay it off in segments in the remaining years. That can be an option you design for yourself, if you need it, when building the contract.

Wouldnt we be saving the full 4.8? We'd have to pay the bonus anyway.

Okay, doing some Smokey Joe math, these are the numbers I came up with concerning how much money we gain/lose with some players that are possible cuts (+ means money/cap room saved, - means money/cap room lost):
John Tait = +2.5 million (+4.8 million?)
Terrence Metcalf = -.8 million
Roberto Garza = -1.25 million
Nathan Vasher = -4.7 million
Marty Booker = +1.5 million
Rashied Davis = -1.2 million
Jason McKie = +.145 million
Adawale Ogunleye = +2.3 million (+4.8 million?)
Mark Anderson = +.5 million
Hunter Hillenmeyer = -1.5 million
Dusty Dvoracek = unknown, should be a very insignificant amount either way
I rounded mostly. There's always the Marcus Hamilton's of the team who could/will be released, but the amount we'd gain or lose is very insignificant to the cap (would be a **** load of money for you or me though).

From listening to JA, it sounds like a definite possibility. Personally, I'd wait another year, but JA might want to send out a wake up call to everyone on the team.

I think he could be fine if he loses a little weight. He looked like he was carrying about 10 pounds more than his frame could hold this year.

Yeah, he pretty much moves all over that line and at times this year, was looking like our best lineman. I hope we extend him.

For those curious, it would cost 2.4 million extra against the cap to cut Vasher. That's not much, but the team obviously wouldn't be doing it for cap reasons.
The team would owe Vasher 2.9 million next year. So the only question is if the team still views Vasher as having starting potential down the road. If they do, you keep him as you've already given him over 12 million in the last two years. If you don't, you likely cut him, as Danieal Manning seems to have the nickle position on lock.
I still don't think it's a given we cut him.
