Default Write a Scouting Report - on an NFL player

Thought this might be an interesting topic. Write a Pro style scouting report on one of your favorite players. :) Could be on someone from on your favorite team, or just someone you watch a lot.

Here's my scouting report on Drew Brees.

Drew Brees - QB New Orleans Saints

Height: 6'0 Weight: 209 lbs

Strengths:
Natural pocket passer with a very quick release, and precise accuracy. Goes through his reads quickly, has good anticipation and timing with his targets and will usually hit the receiver fresh out of their breaks. Excels tremendously at passing from the 10-20 yard range, gets good touch on short range passes. Has a keen ability for sensing the rush and will sidestep and move around in the pocket while still focusing downfield on his reads. Excellent game manager who rarely makes the game breaking errors in crucial situations, will do his best to avoid the negative plays by checking down, throwing out of bounds, or taking the sack if necessary. Although not really his forte, he can extend plays and escape a collapsed pocket when the play breaks down if needed. Has under rated quickness to scramble for a first down when all else fails.

Weakness: Lacks ideal height, will get some passes batted down at the line occasionally. Does not possess elite arm strength. Although he has enough arm strength to make all the throws in the playbook, he doesn’t have the velocity on the deep sideline type throws thrown outside the hash marks... (deep outs, corners)

Overview: Drew Brees is the orchestrator of talent in the Saints offense, what he lacks in raw physical ability, he makes up with top notch intangibles and smart decision making. He almost always puts the ball in a spot where the receiver can make a play. He is not a vocal, outspoken type leader but rather leads by example, and has command of the huddle. A franchise signal caller who is not quite on the level of a Peyton Manning, or Tom Brady but right on the tier below them.

I think this is a cool idea. I'm too lazy to write one up right now though.

Brett Favre QB Green Bay

6-2 220

Strengths: Despite age, still can throw the deep ball very wall. Has fairly good accuracy. Can still get around in the pocket. Puts great velocity on the ball when needed. Experience has led to good 2 minuete drills. Great at improvising, will turn a busted play into a TD.

Weaknesses: Is the oldest starting QB in the league and it shows in throwig ability which is not comparable to when he won the Super Bowl. Will make horrible decisions to throw into double-triple-quadruple-five man coverage. Deep ball, while still good, is not how it used to be.

Overview: Favre is still a top 15 QB and should get more help from a growing team this year. He can still throw the ball better than anyone and if put in a better situation should have better stats than those of the last two years.

Nice scouting report Neko. :) I did another one really fast on Rashean Mathis, and like I said in my first post I pretty much expect people to write up their favorite players on their team, because they are probably most familiar watching them.

Rashean Mathis - CB Jacksonville Jaguars

6'1 - 200 lbs

Strengths: Has amazing ball skills, reacts quickly and gets great breaks on quick passes. (evidenced by his 12 pass deflections this season) Physical, and gets good jams at the line, shows the ability to re-route the receiver in press coverage. Has smooth hip turn and has the recovery speed to survive an occasional misstep.

Weaknesses: At times gets over aggressive going for the big play. Will bite on some pump fakes, and double moves. Needs to improve route recognition against elite route runners. (had some struggles with Marvin Harrison, and Andre Johnson)

Overview: Set a franchise record (8 interceptions) this season. I feel that with his explosive closing burst, and aggressive nature Mathis could be an amazing Cover 2 corner who could terrorize QBs and WRs in the short zones. With a rare blend of size and coverage ability, Mathis has the potential to become a premier lock down Corner in the realm of a Bailey type presence with some refinement in his game.

Carson Palmer QB Cincinnati Bengals
6'5 230

Strengths
Has prototypical size; great delivery; can throw one of the best deep balls in the league; extremely accurate; natural leader in the huddle/locker room; has "heart" as shown by his recovery from the knee injury.

Weaknesses
At times will force passes; leaves ball vulnerable by pump faking when the pocket collapses on him, leads to fumbles; has had two knee injuries.

Overall
Heisman winner, has potential to rank up there with some of the greats. He has ideal size/mindset that define what a franchise QB should be.

Scouting Report

Adam "Pac-Man" Jones - CB, Tennessee Titans

Strengths: Tremendous playmaker - especially in strip clubs. Extensive knowledge and experience with firearms. Very generous with plastic bags full of $20 bills, unless you're a female and you try to actually pick them up off the stage. Very impressive bite-radius-to-height ratio. Displays good left hook when knocking out strippers, but his straight right might be even better.

Weaknesses: Not a good driver after downing 3 bottles of Cristal. Gets caught in the wrong place at the wrong time far too often. Relies on his posse too much and sometimes fails to shoot his own victims. Attempts at launching a rap career have been described with the term "tear-inducing hilarity."

Overview: Pac-Man has shown plenty of flashes and still seems on his way to becoming a Pro Bowl level player (and when I say player, I mean Player). But his tendency to beat up strippers and bite cops is beginning to threaten his once-great promise. If he can keep his focus on what matters - partying his a** off until he runs out of money - he could still be great. But if he doesn't correct his technique and straighten out his game, police and the prison system will be the only ones "making it rain" - on his parade.

Eli Manning - QB - New York Giants:

Strengths: Has all the physical attributes you want in a franchise quarterback standing at over 6'4. Shows exceptional arm strength, perhaps better than his older brother, Peyton Manning. Throwing the ball deep accurately is one of his biggest strengths as a quarterback. Has already mastered one of the hardest aspects of a quarterback, being able to lead his team from behind to a win. Particularly well at doing the previously stated in the fourth quarter, when he's under constant mental pressure. Can throw quite well on the run, even when rolling out to his left. Sells the play action well. Eli is a sneaky athelete, who can often elude the pass rush long enough to find the open receiver - but will generally not try to pick up the first down rushing if no one is open. Tends to spread the ball around to different receivers.

Weaknesses: Biggest knock is his break down in mechanics, often throwing off his back foot when he feels any pressure near him. Bad mechanics will often lead to inaccurate passes and interceptions. Many times will force a play instead of throwing it away or taking a sack. Every now and then will over throw is receiver or put it above him where he can't catch it. Does not posess any real leadership ability except in 4th quarter come back situations. Tends to need taller receivers to catch the footballs he throws too high for most receivers. Very inconsistent in the second half of the season.

Overview: Eli Manning suffers from his big brothers fame. Many expect him to live up to the expectations of his Hall of Fame caliber big brother Peyton Manning, but has not done so yet. Eli Manning has the potential to surpass his brother by winning several more Super Bowls, but it will likely depend on him overcoming some of his fixable bad mechanics problems and his lack of leadership. Some of his mechanic problems could be linked to the fact he makes his offensive line look a lot better than it is, by throwing off his back foot so often due to pressure. If he is given a chance and perhaps a good quarterbacks coach, he could end up being one of the premire quarterbacks in the league.

Demarcus Ware

Strength: Playmaker...Overall great athlete...great timed speed and very good strength...sideline to sideline ability...Great in coverage...stout agianst the tun...has a good motor.

Weakness: Disappears at times...Lacks great pass rushing technique, but improving...Gets eaten up by bigger lineman...Runs himself out of plays sometimes(over pursues)...Still getting used to playing 3-4 OLB.

i guess im ur frist huh? I hate it when he throws the deep balls trying to win the game when there still alot of time left in the game. ( Good example is when we faced the Vikings the second time and he threw an INT to Griffn i think. )

Michael Strahan:

Strengths: Once saved the world from nuclear disaster by sacking the madman who was about to push the button. He is strong at the point of attack, and can morph into Beast from Xmen at any given moment. Once fit Donovann McNabb in between his teeth during a sack. Unstoppable. Can't be blocked. Is everywhere and nowhere at the same time.

Weaknesses: Didn't get a prenup.

Footnotes: An all around talent who will be a sure HOFer. Well rounded athlete that also plays basketball from time to time. Has a tremendous jumpshot.

Michael Vick, QB, Atlanta Falcons

6'0" 1/4
206-lbs

Pros: Best athlete to ever play the Quarterback position. Very strong for his size, with a lean high cut frame. Fastest player on the field in any given day. Quick release, and the strongest arm in the NFL right now. Deadly rolling to his left, as a run/pass dual threat. When protected in the pocket, is accurate. Opens up running lanes for his Backs, with the threat of boot action. Main cog in the top rushing offense, three years running. Can singlehandedly take over games at will.

Cons: Lacks ideal height, because of that struggles to read the field inside the pocket. While accurate when protected, his mechanics and footwork disintegrate when he's taken shots, because of that his accuracy is inconsistent. Struggles passing when rolling to his right. His deep ball hangs too long in the air. Lacks top notch anticipation on his throws. Because of his quickness he drops back too quickly, disrupting the timing between him and his receivers.

Overview: Michael Vick is uneven, in regards to consistency, on a game to game basis. When he's on, he produces like an elite QB. Unfortunately he hasn't been "on" nearly enough. He played phenomenally well in 2002, as a passer and runner. Since then, hasn't been able to reattain that level of production. This year will be a make or break year, with Bobby Petrino and Hue Jackson giving him the opportunity to take the helm of the offense. If he reverts to '02 form, it's safe to say the WCO-hybrid set his career back. If not, then everyone will know that Michael Vick never took his game to the next level, like he could have.

I can agree with most of the Vick and Mathis reports

Julius Peppers - DE Carolina Panthers
Height: 6'6 Weight: 285 lbs

Strengths:
Incredible Natural Athlete, has an unprecedented combination of size and speed. Plays much faster and stronger than work out numbers lead people to believe. Has an excellent repotoire of power and spin moves. Excellent anticipation against the run and that might be the best aspect of his game. Is easily one of, if not, the best player at his position and probably a top 10 player regardless of position.

Weakness: Will sometimes bite on the playfake, can occasionally get too wide around a tackle and get pushed out of the play. At times can be a one trick pony when it comes to pass rushing. Relies heavily on his athleticism.

Overview: Julius Peppers is the diamond in the crown of John Fox's talented defense. His combination of strength and speed for a man his size haven't been seen in the NFL before and likely never will be again. Many people fail to see the difference between his work out numbers and his actual play speed and strength. While not without his weaknesses they're easily overshadowed by what he brings to a team.

Thomas Davis - LB - Carolina Panthers
Height: 6'0 Weight: 231 lbs

Strengths:
One of the best pure tacklers for his age and experience at the position. Shows perfect technique when blitzing and fighting off blockers. Has an excellent motor and possess top intangibles. Can and has covered some of the best runningbacks and the leagues best running quarterbacks brilliantly. Played like a veteran in only his first year at linebacker. Very fast, very strong, aggressive and motivated. Can double as a safety or at times nickel back.

Weakness: Will sometimes bite on the playfake, can be too aggressive and over pursue his player. Lack of ideal height has lead to him struggling when asked to cover taller receivers and tight ends. Is at times susceptible to the crack back block when expecting a passing play.

Overview: Thomas Davis is already a very solid linebacker playing on the strong side in the Panthers scheme. His speed and ability to move his hands and hips well when engaged has lead to him being a perfect strong side linebacker. From this position he and Julius Peppers have paired up to form an almost impenetrable left side for the defense. A great cover guy who shut down Reggie bush and Michael Vick Twice last year. Has a lot to learn about the position but is already excelling in many aspects.
