Default 2013's Free Agents

It's way too early to start thinking about where next year's crop of free agents will land, but how will some of the benchmark contracts handed out this offseason affect rosters at the end of the year? Everyone knows (most) teams draft with an eye towards the future; some clubs will reasonably draft and groom replacements on year in advance. The market for wide receivers looks particularly crazy, and cornerbacks such as Cortland Finnegan and Brandon Carr got paid big bucks as well.

The Patriots have four major free agents whose contracts expire at the end of the 2012 season: WR Wes Welker, OT Sebastian Vollmer, OG Brian Waters, and S Patrick Chung.

Chung is a restricted free agent, so he should be back after being tendered at the first-round level. Marcus Cannon is presumably being groomed to replace either Waters or Vollmer, but another offensive lineman could be in order if the Patriots deem Vollmer too expensive to retain (or if he gets injured again.) Welker deserves a two or three-year deal but the team could investigate options there as well if they are not confident in Julian Edelman's ability to replace Welker. So for New England, another first-round offensive tackle is a potential surprise pick.

How does your club look?

I don't really feel like digging and the only one I can remember off the top of my head is Branden Albert. We'll need to lock him up sometime soon.

49ers

I believe that Parys Haralson, Dashon Goldson and Isaac Sopoaga are the only 2011 starters to be FA in 2013. Haralson has already been replaced in the starting lineup.

According to ninercaphell.com -

FB Rock Cartwright, WR Randy Moss, TE Delanie Walker, NT Isaac Sopoaga, NT Ricky Jean Francois, ILB Tavares Gooden, CB Tramaine Brock (RFA), P Andy Lee and LS Ryan Pontbriand.

Dont see Cartwright and Moss coming back in 2013. Dont see Pontbriand making it past final cuts unless Jennings gets released which would be stupid. Think Walker will leave as an UFA since he could probably be a starter for another team instead of the backup to Davis. Sopoaga is 50/50 depending on how he plays in 2012 and how Jean-Francois and Ian Williams play behind him. I expect Jean-Francois to be re-signed. Gooden is 50/50. Brock is 50/50. Lee will be re-signed or franchised. ILB Larry Grant who was tendered at the 7th round level will probably be allowed to leave as an UFA if he's still a 49er. Haralson is under contract for two more years and while Brooks and Aldon Smith will be the projected starters in 2012, I dont see Haralson going anywhere since he's the only other OLB on the roster, is cheap for the next two years and in case Aldon cant adjust to a starter role, Haralson can step in and they can repeat what they did in 2011 by rotating Aldon in on pass rushing situations. Goldson has been franchised and hasnt signed the tender yet but I fully expect him to sign a long term deal before TC.

Pretty sure Jermaine Gresham, Carlos Dunlap, and Jordan Shipley are all free agents after this year.

For the Bears, obviously the biggest is Matt Forte. There is a good chance we franchise him again. Johnny Knox I'd like to have back, but cheap. Chris Williams, Lance Louis, and Chris Spencer are all free agent. We don't really need any of them back, they all suck. On defense, Henry Melton, Nick Roach, and DJ Moore are free agents. So all in all, the only must resign is Forte.

I don't think he's capable of playing outside corner. At least, Lovie doesn't seem to think so.

The Patriots actually probably need a slot corner more than an outside guy, although the CB position is much more well-stocked than people think. Devin McCourty and Ras-I Dowling project as the starters on the outside, with Kyle Arrington and Sterling Moore as depth/slot options. Steve Gregory was also signed to work a little bit in the slot and Malcolm Williams is an up-and-coming special teams contributor who plays both CB and S.

Most assume that the Patriots are weak at cornerback but McCourty's struggles last season can be primarily attributed to the revolving door of poor options at safety over the top, which left him with no help against receivers such as Brandon Marshall, Vincent Jackson, etc. Josh Barrett, Sergio Brown, James Ihedigbo, etc. just didn't get it done as starters and Patrick Chung was injured for half of the season. The defense played much better when Chung was on the field, and Dowling looked excellent before being hurt as well. If New England can add a reliable center-fielder at free safety and get more consistent pressure on QBs, the cornerbacks should be a highlight of the defensive play.

This just isn't true, I've heard way too many Pats fans use this excuse. Did it contribute to the problem, yes, but the truth is he just plain sucked. He sucked against small quick wide receivers, he sucked against big wide receivers, he sucked against fast wide receivers, he just sucked against everyone. He couldn't play man, he couldn't play press, and he played mediocrely in zone coverage. He couldn't track the ball once it was in the air, and his tackling got worse.

Outside CB is a far bigger need than a slot corner, and I don't even know how that could be a question. Dowling can't stay healthy, and what if McCourty doesn't get better? Then we're destined for last season repeating itself all over again. McCourty would be better in the slot anyways, as would Arrington.

I does not matter for the Bengals they will not bring any of them back and francise a average kicker again. Mike Brown will take the fine for not spending the 90% cap rule because it will be cheaper then spending money.

The Bills have a decent amount of upcoming free agents and a few of them could be in for big pay days no matter where they end up. I tried to list them in order of importance to the team or any team that might look at them if they hit the open market.

Jairus Byrd S - One of the best young safeties in the game. If he hit the open market he'd probably end up being one of the highest paid safeties of all time with the scarcity of safety talent in the league right now and lack of prospects in the draft. Definitely need to re-sign him before he sees how much other teams will pay.
Fred Jackson RB - He'll be 32, but he doesn't have a lot of mileage and is one of the most complete backs in the league and is highly effective wherever he is on the field (would probably be better than most teams slot receivers if you just stuck him there), and offers a tonne of versatility. He isn't worth as much as he probably thinks he is, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Bills or any other team give him a 3 year deal worth 7-8 mil per season.
Andy Levitre OG - One of the better guards in the league, the Bills should be able to get him to sign a new contract before free agency starts, if not he'll probably end up getting a contract similar to the one Grubbs signed with New Orleans assuming the cap number goes up next year.
Leodis McKelvin CB - Really inconsistent, gives up a lot of penalties but can go on 2-3 game streaks where he just shuts receivers down all game long. I can definitely see him hitting the open market and some team drastically over paying him like Eric Wright, but I can also see him improving his game even though he's been in the league for a while already.
Brian Moorman P - The Bills will probably make him one of the highest paid punters of all time, and hes totally worth it.
Kraig Urbik - Solid starting right tackle who won't command big time money. Definitely worth a long term investment at a reasonable cost. If he hits the open market he'll be a solid investment on what would in all likelihood be a bargain contract as far as free agent offensive line starters go.
Chad Rinehart - Great backup and fringe starter across the interior offensive line. Most valuable for his versatility along the line. Worth keeping around if he can stomach a backup and special teams role on the team. Solid pickup for any team that needs depth along the interior offensive line.
David Nelson WR (RFA) - Solid possession receiver, nothing spectacular, but he's an athletic big guy who looks like a tight-end. He'll be tendered as a restricted free agent, but probably only for a 2nd round tender at most.
Spencer Johnson DT - He's been a quality depth player for the Bills and is definitely a quality rotational DT, especially in pass rushing situations, I wouldn't mind keeping him around behind Williams and Dareus.
Shawne Merriman LB - With the switch to the 4-3 he should hit the open market.
Alex Carrington DE - Hasn't done much since being drafted, but he's been playing all sorts of random positions. He'll probably back up Mario Williams at LDE this year where he should have been the entire time. He'll probably end up re-signing on a cheap contract unless he looks good as a rotational guy this year.
Donald Jones WR (RFA) - Depth wide receiver, he'll get the lowest restricted free agent tender probably.

Kraig Urbik and Chad Rinehart too me thinks.

We need to sign Levitre, Byrd before Week 1. Both are Top 5 at their positions before their rookie contract comes up. I'm a McKelvin guy. I hope we keep him at a reasonable price.

I don't know everyone but off the top of my head I do know that Jake Long, Reggie Bush, Matt Moore, and Cameron Wake are set to be free agents in 2013.

Rams have Chris Long and James Lariunitus as FA's next year. Can't afford to lose either.

Aqib Talib from Tampa, but any one can have him. I don't even want him this year.

wow. just looked it up and the Chiefs are in pretty good shape as far as potential FAs. only 4 starters are in the last year of their contract:

LT Brandon Albert - he should be signed long term this season. he isn't terrible but can't demand top LT money either.

DT/DE Glenn Dorsey - i really expect him to be traded. he has value to an even front team. i can't imagine the Chiefs letting him walk after this season is over with zero compinsation.

OG Ryan Lilja - see ya. he's a KC guy, but struggled mightly last season. KC is already looking for his replacement

P Dustin Colquitt - believe it or not, this might be our most important player to re-sign. he has been great for this team through some bad years. having a good punter is huge for our defense.
