Pre-training camp buzz/news
UDFA WR Patrick Edwards made some buzz in mini camp. He played with Case Keenum at Houston and scored 20 TDs last season. He dropped in the draft due to injury.

Our offense will be stupidly fast. Safeties will not want to play us.
Edwards' injury was seriously the dumbest thing I have ever seen. I hope he seriously wins millions of dollars from Marshall. Who the hell parks a cart on the edge of the endzone?

Broyles and Edwards had a ton of production in college. Yeah, they say Edwards is actually a 4.3 guy. Him and Kellen Moore could be nice assets picked up in undrafted free agency.

That news was pretty shocking. Young seems like bit of a loose cannon, it showed during the regular season game against the Saints. I love the intensity but he needs to reel it in and not snap.

Yeah. Delmas has a mouth but Titus needs to be smarter. Saint game Young was antagonized some. He paid the price getting benched and now out at OTAs. Doesn't hurt the Lions that greatly yet. Just hope he smarts up quickly.

you would think that he would be smarter with Broyles now in town. lots of capable pass catchers, so he'll need all the practice edge he can get before the season.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/79...ge-report-says
Quote:
Detroit Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley was arrested for the second time this offseason early Sunday morning and charged with driving under the influence and attempting to elude police, Fox10TV.com reported.
The Alabama State Troopers told Fox10TV.com that Fairley was arrested shortly after 1 a.m. in Mobile, Ala.
Fairley was also ticketed for reckless driving, having an open container and no proof of insurance, the report said. Fox10TV.com said Fairley posted $1,750 bond and was released shortly after 9 a.m. on Sunday.

Can somebody beat the hell out of this dumbass for me? You have one job, DON'T GET ARRESTED and YOU CAN'T ******* DO IT! Should get a mini suspension and be permanently moved to team headquarters so he can't **** up again.

The team is going to come down hard on him I think. This has been a disastrous offseason considering the mandate to improve the team's image as a group of "bad boys" after last season. I bet he'll get a 2-4 game suspension.

What does everyone here think of Cliff Avril? He is supposedly looking for a four-year deal worth over $10 million per season. Below are the players he beat for sacks in 2011 (I've bolded the quality blockers on that list):
Phil Loadholt (1)
Frank Omiyale (1)
Tyson Clabo (1)
Orlando Franklin (2)
Frank Omiyale (1)
Bryan Bulaga (1)
Phil Loadholt (2)
Kevin Boss (1)
Carson Palmer (1)
Zach Strief (1)

He can make game changing plays. He came up huge in a few games last season. With the cap hits of Suh, Stafford, and Calvin they can not afford to pay Avril 10 million per. I'd pay him between 5 and 7 million.
Fairley, Titus, and Leshoure need to get their **** together. You don't need a team full of choir boys to win but this is getting ridiculous.

I think he's out of his mind and we should trade him. He's lining up on the deepest and most talented dline in the NFL. I only want to pay him $6-7million.

According to NFL.com,
Quote:
|
Avril, rather, wants the $10 million-plus per year on an extension, specifically targeting a four-year deal worth over $42 million. His agents reportedly want more than half of that amount guaranteed. The Lions appear to be proposing a deal in the $8-9 million range annually.
|
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d...content_stream
Mark Anderson just signed for $8 million per season, there's no way the Lions are going to be able to re-sign Avril at $5-7 million. Could this be Avril's last season in Detroit?

Willie Young will probably replace him next season. It would be nice to get a draft pick out of him. Maybe Ronnell Lewis can step up and be a good rotational DE too, but I think he'll get snaps at OLB too.

But one thing to think about is KVB has a large contract and is getting old. Love the guy but I've seen bigger names get cut. They could use that money to pay Avril long term. If Broyles pans out you could see Burleson cut to save money. Plus I think Delmas becomes unrestricted next off-season.

Willie Young is definitely a guy to keep an eye on. I think he has the potential to at least come close to the player Avril is and at 1/6 the price (shady math there).

LOL no. I wouldn't give more than a 4th for him ATM. He's at best the Nickle CB for Dallas who is on a contract year.

Just curious. Heard Dallas wasn't going to move him for anything less than a 2nd or complimentary player. Figured Dallas showed interest in Broyles predraft and you guys still have 3 good WR's that maybe it would be a fit.

Broyles was drafted for the long term. He has zero chance of being traded. The ink on his contract probably isn't even dry yet , lol.

I'd entertain offers for Fairley if you threw in a pick.

Now that's a thought. But I have a feeling the DT classes are going to start fading and won't be as good as the past two years and Corey Williams is going to start getting long in the tooth soon.

random little twentyman update article.
http://www.detroitlions.com/news/lio...e-24d4193e11e9
Quote:
Cunningham said it was linebackers coach Matt Burke who first spotted Whitehead’s potential and lobbied for the team to draft him.
The Lions felt strongly enough about Burke’s evaluation to give up a 2013 fourth-round pick in order to move up in the fifth round to get Whitehead.
So far, they haven’t been disappointed with that decision.
That’s by far the biggest surprise I've had in quite a while. I think Matt Burke and the scouts did a great job on him. I kept looking at him and I said, 'Matt, I am not sure.' I have always struggled with linebackers because of the way the college game is (played). But Matt Burke said, 'Gun, I believe this guy can play,' and I think Matt Burke was right. And so were the scouts.
"He's much better than a fifth-round draft choice. He is something."
Cunningham then went on to answer the question about Lewis and Hogue, but the fact that he made it a point to include Whitehead in the conversation says a little something about the early impressions Whitehead is leaving on coaches this offseason, especially Cunningham.
Whitehead was a 3-4 on-the-line rush linebacker at Temple and finished his senior year with 12 tackles-for-loss and five sacks. By all accounts, he’s making a seamless transition as an outside linebacker in the team’s 4-3 scheme.
Whitehead was running with the first-team defense Monday in the absence of starter Justin Durant (undisclosed) and Hogue (laceration on his arm).
|
That helps answer some draft day questions about why we traded up for him.

I believe in the pick because I believe in Mayhew but until the season begins and Whitehead proves to be a good pick, I take everything with a grain of salt.

LeShoure two game suspensioin isn't bad. Thought it would be worse. Glad LeShoure participated in 11 on 11s in last day of camp. He should be ready to rock for training camp which is crazy with that injury.
Broyles also doing reactive stuff with Chris Houston.
Reiff and Whitehead look good. Fox injured again, surpirse suprise, last chance for him at Training Camp.
July 23 rookies July 26 vets for TC. Can't wait.

According to WXYZ’s Tom Leyden, Berry was driving near the Hilton Harrisburg Hotel early Saturday morning when the car he was driving struck other parked vehicles. Berry allegedly exited his car and began to walk away from the scene. A witness followed him and called the police.
Berry was arrested at 4:45 a.m. and transported to the Harrisburg Police Department booking center.
According to Leyden, Berry was not cooperative when asked for personal information during the booking process and also refused to submit to a breathalyzer test. Berry was issued a series of summonses for the charges and was released. He is awaiting arraignment.
